    The Redeemer & Redemption

Ep. 25 - The Redeemer & Redemption EPISODE DESCRIPTION What does it take to qualify as a Redeemer? In this first installment of a two-part message on redemption, Pastor Josh opens in Ephesians 1:7 and traces the doctrine of redemption from God’s eternal counsel into the pages of Ruth. Redemption was no afterthought — it was the prudent provision of an all-wise God who foresaw the entry of sin and purposed in eternity past to purchase man back to Himself. Drawing on the laws of the kinsman-redeemer in Leviticus 25 and the vivid typology of Boaz in Ruth 3–4, Pastor Josh identifies three qualifications that God has stipulated for any redeemer: he must be the nearest kinsman, he must be willing, and he must be able to pay the ransom price without compromising his own inheritance. Christ meets every qualification — and surpasses them all. For His riches are so vast that the price of redemption is only a portion. Part 2 will take up the cross and the free gift of that redemption. KEY SCRIPTURES Psalm 49:7–8 “None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (for the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)” Colossians 1:16–18 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Ruth 3:9, 12–13 “And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman... And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.” Ruth 4:4–6 “And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” Ephesians 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” EPISODE OUTLINE * The need for redemption — what sin and death brought into God’s creation * God’s eternal counsel — wisdom, prudence, and the foreknowledge of evil * The law of faith versus the law of works — how God stipulated redemption * Colossians 1:16–18 — Christ preeminent in creation and in redemption * The book of Ruth — Boaz as a type of Christ the Redeemer * Qualification 1: the nearest kinsman — Leviticus 25 and Ruth 3:12 * Qualification 2: willingness — “I will do to thee all that thou requirest” (Ruth 3:11) * Qualification 3: ability — paying the ransom without marring his own inheritance (Ruth 4:6) * The exceeding riches of grace — redemption as only a portion of what Christ possesses * 2 Corinthians 8:9 — though He was rich, He became poor that we might be made rich QUESTIONS DISCUSSED * Why does God stipulate qualifications for the Redeemer, and what does this reveal about His justice? * What is the significance of the nearest kinsman requirement — how does Christ fulfill this in His incarnation? * Boaz said “I will” — in what sense is Christ’s willingness to redeem meaningful to you personally? * What does it mean that Boaz was “able” to redeem without marring his inheritance? How does this picture Christ’s infinite sufficiency? * Pastor Josh says redemption is only a portion of the riches of grace. What does that say about how broadly we should understand salvation? * How should the truth of Ephesians 1:7 — redemption according to the riches of His grace — shape the way you think about your standing before God? Suffering & Trials

Ep. 26 - Suffering & Trials EPISODE SUMMARY  Why does a loving God allow suffering? The question is not whether we will suffer -- every believer will (John 16:33). The question is how we respond when we do. Pastor Josh examines three sources of suffering: the general effects of the fallen world (Genesis 3), the persecution that comes from living godly in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:12), and the consequences of our own poor choices. Whatever the cause, God's purpose remains: to conform us to Christ's image (Romans 8:28-29), to chasten us for our profit (Hebrews 12:10-11), and to produce the eternal weight of glory that makes present affliction light (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). The comfort God gives us in our trials becomes the ministry we give to others. No suffering is wasted -- we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.  ----------  KEY SCRIPTURES  - Genesis 3:17-18 -- Cursed is the ground - John 16:33 -- In the world ye shall have tribulation - 1 Peter 4:12 -- Think it not strange - 2 Timothy 3:12 -- All that will live godly shall suffer persecution - Romans 8:18 -- Not worthy to be compared - Romans 8:28-29 -- All things work together for good - 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 -- An eternal weight of glory - Hebrews 12:10-11 -- Chastened for our profit - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 -- My grace is sufficient - Philippians 4:6-7 -- Be careful for nothing - 1 Peter 5:6-7 -- Cast all your care upon Him - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 -- Comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted - Romans 8:37 -- More than conquerors  ----------  EPISODE OUTLINE  1. Walking in the Spirit

Ep. 23 - Walking in the Spirit EPISODE SUMMARY  What does it truly mean to walk in the Spirit -- and what fruit should show up in the life of someone who is Spirit-led? Walking in the Spirit is not a vague spiritual feeling. It is the most practical thing in the Christian life: a continual dependency on a Person who dwells within, teaches through the Word, and leads through the mind. Pastor Josh examines how the Spirit's ministry works -- not by influencing from the outside but by transforming from within, teaching the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:12-16), renewing the understanding (Romans 12:2), and producing fruit the flesh could never manufacture (Galatians 5:22-23). The walk begins by filling the mind with the Word, meditating, and praying -- then proving the will of God in the specific and subjective circumstances of each believer's life.  ----------  KEY SCRIPTURES  - Galatians 5:16-17 -- Walk in the Spirit; the flesh and Spirit at war - Galatians 5:22-23 -- The fruit of the Spirit - Romans 8:5-6, 9 -- They that are after the Spirit mind the things of the Spirit - 1 Corinthians 2:12-16 -- We have the mind of Christ - Ephesians 4:20-21 -- Taught by Him as the truth is in Jesus - Philippians 2:3-5 -- Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus - Romans 12:2 -- Transformed by the renewing of your mind - Galatians 6:8 -- He that soweth to the Spirit shall reap life everlasting - Proverbs 3:5-6 -- Acknowledge Him in all thy ways - Colossians 3:16-17 -- Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly  ----------  EPISODE OUTLINE  1. Living After the Flesh or Spirit

Ep. 22 - Living After the Flesh or Spirit EPISODE SUMMARY  Where does the Christian walk begin -- and what is actually powering it? The question is not whether to have activity; Scripture calls the believer to good works. The question is where that activity comes from. Pastor Josh examines the two operating systems available to the Christian: flesh and Spirit. The flesh cannot produce what pleases God, even when pointed at good things like the law -- Romans 7 exposes this failure and Romans 8 provides the alternative. Two pitfalls threaten the Spirit-led walk: Galatianism (returning to law-keeping as the path to spiritual growth, Galatians 3:3) and Corinthianism (the drift toward the world's wisdom as a substitute for God's). The alternative to both is 2 Corinthians 9:8 -- God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you may abound in every good work.  ----------  KEY SCRIPTURES  - Ephesians 2:10 -- Created unto good works - Romans 6:14 -- Not under the law, but under grace - Romans 7:7, 14-15 -- The struggle of the flesh under the law - Romans 8:1, 4-5 -- Walking after the Spirit - Romans 8:3 -- What the law could not do - Galatians 2:20 -- Christ liveth in me - Galatians 3:3 -- Having begun in the Spirit - Galatians 5:1 -- Stand fast in the liberty - 2 Corinthians 9:8 -- All grace abound toward you - 1 Corinthians 2:9-12 -- Revealed unto us by His Spirit - Romans 12:1-2 -- Transformed by the renewing of your mind  ----------  EPISODE OUTLINE  1. Where the Christian walk begins -- grace, not willpower (Ephesians 2:10, Romans 6:14) 2. The flesh defined -- infirmity, insufficiency, inability to please God 3. The law and the flesh -- Romans 7 and why the law is weak through the flesh 4. Walking after the Spirit -- Romans 8:1-5 5. It is no longer I but Christ -- Galatians 2:20 6. The Christian’s Understanding of the World

Ep. 21 - The Christian’s Understanding of the World EPISODE SUMMARY When the Bible speaks of the world, it means more than geography. It describes a system actively opposed to God -- marked by vanity, energized by the god of this world, and characterized by the perilous attitudes of 2 Timothy 3. Pastor Josh examines the Christian's understanding of the world across four movements: the world's nature (everything under the sun is vanity and perishing, Ecclesiastes 2:11); the world's opposition (enmity with God, blinded by the god of this world, 2 Corinthians 4:4); the Christian's response (not withdrawal but love, transformed by the renewing of the mind, in the world but not of it); and the eternal contrast (the world passeth away, but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever, 1 John 2:17). ---------- KEY SCRIPTURES - Ecclesiastes 2:11 -- All is vanity and vexation of spirit - Psalm 39:5-6 -- Every man at his best state is altogether vanity - Psalm 49:10-12 -- Man abideth not; he is like the beasts that perish - 1 Corinthians 7:31 -- The fashion of this world passeth away - 1 John 2:15-17 -- Love not the world - Romans 12:2 -- Be not conformed to this world - James 4:4 -- Friendship with the world is enmity with God - 1 John 5:19 -- The whole world lieth in wickedness - 2 Corinthians 4:4 -- The god of this world - 2 Corinthians 10:5 -- Taking every thought captive - Colossians 3:2 -- Set your affection on things above - Jeremiah 9:23-24 -- Glory in knowing the Lord - Proverbs 11:7 -- The hope of the wicked perisheth - 1 Corinthians 10:31 -- Do all to the glory of God  ---------- EPISODE OUTLINE 1. The Christian's Response to Wickedness

Ep. 20 - The Christian's Response to Wickedness EPISODE SUMMARY What are we to think when wickedness strikes -- when tragedy is shocking, grief is real, and anger is immediate? The natural response is to marvel, to fret, to recompense evil for evil. But none of those are the Christian response. Pastor Josh works through five biblical responses to wickedness: lament tempered by the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3); discernment rooted in truth rather than social media and conspiracy theories (Ephesians 6:14); the recognition that justice belongs to God and vengeance is His (Romans 12:19); strength in the Lord rather than the flesh (Ephesians 6:10); and an eternal perspective anchored in the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:6-10). God's Word equips the believer for exactly this moment. ---------- KEY SCRIPTURES - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 -- The God of all comfort - Psalm 34:18 -- Nigh unto the broken heart - Matthew 5:4 -- Blessed are they that mourn - 1 Thessalonians 5:21 -- Prove all things - Ephesians 6:14 -- Loins girt about with truth - 2 Timothy 3:1-5 -- Perilous times - Ecclesiastes 5:8 -- Marvel not at the matter - Proverbs 29:16 -- The righteous shall see their fall - Psalm 37:1-2 -- Fret not thyself - Isaiah 5:20 -- Woe unto them that call evil good - Romans 12:19 -- Vengeance is mine - 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 -- A righteous thing with God - 1 Peter 2:20-23 -- Committed to Him that judgeth righteously - Ephesians 6:10 -- Be strong in the Lord - 2 Timothy 1:7 -- A sound mind - Hebrews 9:27 -- After this the judgment ---------- EPISODE OUTLINE 1. Edification & Service

Ep. 19 - Edification & Service EPISODE SUMMARY What is actually happening when the church gathers -- and what is supposed to be happening? The church has become consumeristic, judged by atmosphere and programs, and the believer who comes only to receive has misunderstood it entirely. Pastor Josh examines edification and service as the twin purposes of the gathered church. Edification begins with the faithful preaching of the Word -- God must reveal Himself to us through Scripture faithfully taught. That Word then flows outward in service: bearing one another's burdens, provoking one another to love and good works, and restoring in the spirit of meekness. Every member is necessary. The church grows as every member invests in others through truth and love. ---------- KEY SCRIPTURES - 1 Corinthians 11:17 -- Coming together for the worse - 2 Timothy 4:2 -- Preach the word - Psalm 19:1, 7 -- General and special revelation - Ephesians 4:15-16 -- Every joint supplying - Galatians 5:13 -- By love serve one another - Galatians 6:1-2 -- Bear one another's burdens - Hebrews 10:24-25 -- Provoke unto love and good works - 1 Corinthians 12:7 -- Every member necessary ---------- EPISODE OUTLINE 1. The consumeristic church -- judged by atmosphere, not Word and service 2. Coming together for the better -- 1 Corinthians 11:17 3. The preaching of the Word -- 2 Timothy 4:2 4. General and special revelation -- Psalm 19 5. Edification defined -- the Word building up the inner man 6. Every joint supplying -- Ephesians 4:15-16 7. By love serve one another -- Galatians 5:13 8. Worship

Ep. 18 - Worship EPISODE SUMMARY  When you think about worship, what comes to mind first? Most Christians think about music -- the lights, the atmosphere, the Sunday service. But Pastor Josh examines what the Bible actually says worship is. Starting with John 4:23-24, where the Lord tells the Samaritan woman that true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and in truth, he traces the doctrine through Psalm 51, Ephesians 3, Colossians 3, and Philippians 3, showing that worship is not an external compulsion but the inward overflow of a heart quickened by the Spirit and shaped by the Word. Worship without truth drifts into idolatry. Truth without the Spirit becomes empty ritual. Romans 12:1 brings it together: a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God -- the believer as a 24-7 worshiper in every word, deed, and decision.  ---------- KEY SCRIPTURES  - John 4:23-24 -- Worship in spirit and in truth - Psalm 51:16-17 -- A broken and contrite heart - Ephesians 3:16-17 -- Strengthened with might in the inner man - Colossians 3:16-17 -- Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly - Philippians 3:3 -- We are the circumcision, worshiping God in the spirit - John 17:17 -- Sanctify them through thy truth - Ephesians 6:6 -- Doing the will of God from the heart - Romans 12:1 -- A living sacrifice, reasonable service - 1 Corinthians 6:20 -- Glorify God in your body  ----------  EPISODE OUTLINE  1. The first association -- music, lights, Sunday services 2. The opening question -- what if all of that disappeared? 3. Worship involves all of life 4. John 4 -- worship is not about a place but the heart 5. Psalm 51 -- a broken and contrite spirit 6. Ephesians 3 -- strengthened in the inner man 7. Colossians 3 -- the word of Christ dwelling richly 8. Philippians 3:3 -- worship in the spirit, no confidence in the flesh 9. Worship is gratitude 10. Truth governs worship 11.
