    On starting before you’re ready

In this episode, I explore what it means to start before you’re ready - and why ‘ready’ might be an illusion that keeps us waiting for the perfect conditions before we begin. I share my own experience of asking whether I was ready to create Becoming the Change, and the fears underneath that question: am I good enough? Do I know enough? What if I get it wrong? What if I fail or people judge me? I explore how the constant pursuit of self-improvement can sometimes reinforce the belief that who we are now isn’t enough, and what might change if instead we allowed ourselves to show up as imperfect humans who are learning as we go. I explore why clarity, confidence and courage often come through doing rather than thinking; how taking small steps creates momentum; letting go of attachment to outcomes; experimenting, learning and changing course as we go; and some of the fears and resistance that can stop us putting ourselves out there. I talk about rejection, failure, embarrassment and other people’s opinions, and why accepting and trusting ourselves can make it easier to follow what feels true to us. And I reflect on what it might mean to create things differently - without needing them to be perfect, polished or immediately successful. In a world that increasingly makes perfection easy to manufacture, perhaps there is something powerful in being willing to be real, messy and human. Starting something in a way that is more aligned, adaptive and authentic can be part of becoming the change we want to see. So, if there’s something you’ve been wanting to start but you’re waiting until you feel more ready, this episode is for you. What’s one small thing you could do today? The podcast is part of the Becoming the Change movement - for people who are getting to know themselves more deeply, exploring how to contribute to a more just and regenerative future, and looking for a more fulfilling, energising and easeful way of doing that. I hope this podcast can be a companion on your journey. You can subscribe to On Becoming the Change podcast on Substack, Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts to hear about new episodes. The Guiding Principles of Becoming the Change

In this episode, I’m sharing the first draft of the guiding principles that sit at the heart of the Becoming the Change movement. These are the ways of being and practices I’m seeking to embody as I go through life and create Becoming the Change. They are invitations to cultivate ways of being that are more conscious, compassionate, connected and regenerative and what I believe can support us to create a better future from the inside out. The core values of Becoming the Change are Presence, Love, Kindness & Compassion, Authenticity, Open-heartedness & Courage, Childlike Joy & Aliveness, Connection, Living Systems, Enoughness, and Humility & Integrity. I explore what sits behind each of these - returning to the present moment, living from love and compassion, letting go of our stories and reconnecting with our true nature, embracing vulnerability and having courage, reconnecting with childlike joy, innocence and creativity, nurturing meaningful relationships, living more like nature, remembering that we are already enough, and aligning our actions with our deepest values. These guiding principles are shared as intentions and practices, they are not something to perfect or strive towards or judge ourselves against. They are reminders that help us come home to ourselves. This is the first draft of the values and guiding principles of Becoming the Change, I would love to chat with others who are living along the same lines. I’d like to hear your thoughts about these topics and if you would like to help me evolve and shape these, please drop me a message or comment. On being hope

In this episode of On Becoming the Change, I explore my relationship with hope and what it means to be hopeful in these times. It’s a concept I’ve had a complicated relationship with over the years, and this episode is an exploration of what hope means to me. After spending most of my life learning about and working on the social and environmental problems that exist in the world, I’ve increasingly found hope to be a difficult word. A few years ago, I struggled deeply with eco-anxiety, had a pessimistic view of the future and found myself totally overwhelmed by the predictions for the future. Whilst I still think there will be intense challenges going forward, I have found a way to ‘be’ hope - not the kind of hope that is dependent on things turning out a certain way or based on what other people do - the kind of hope that is about practicing and choosing to live in presence and taking aligned action. I reflect on hope as an active and intentional practice: letting go of attachment to outcomes, remembering our capacity to choose how we respond, focusing on what is within our control, cultivating the qualities and feelings we want to bring into the world, and trusting that meaningful action begins with the place we create from. Throughout the episode, I talk about the role of agency, acceptance, and living in alignment with our values, and why I’ve found it more meaningful to focus on intention than outcomes. I also explore how the stories we consume shape our experience of the world, why cultivating feelings such as gratitude, awe, joy, and connection can help us stay resourced, and how taking action that feels deeply meaningful to us can create a sense of hope from within rather than relying on external circumstances. I also explore the importance of protecting our energy, noticing where we place our attention, cultivating emotions that help us feel more alive, and recognising that the way we show up each day matters, regardless of what the future holds. If you have been sitting with questions around how to find hope in these times, I hope this exploration offers you something to reflect on. I would love to hear your own reflections, views, and resources on what hope means to you, please do share in the comments. On Becoming the Change is part of the Becoming the Change movement for people who are getting to know themselves more deeply, coming back to wholeness and exploring how to contribute to a more just and regenerative future from a more fulfilling, energising, and easeful place. The Why of Becoming the Change

In this episode of On Becoming the Change, I share my intentions for creating the Becoming the Change movement, where it came from, what my vision is and who it is for. Becoming the Change is founded from my own inquiry into what it means to become the change we want to see in the world. It’s an exploration of what it means to be human in these complex and uncertain times, and how we find peace, freedom, clarity, and a sense of purpose and meaning. Drawing on insights that I’ve learnt from mindfulness, Buddhism, Taoism, yoga philosophy, coaching, therapy, systems and regenerative thinking - I reflect on the common thread I’ve found running through them all: that our true purpose is to come home to ourselves. To me this means deepening our consciousness and living from a place of greater presence, authenticity, connection, and love. I share why I chose the name Becoming the Change as both aspects of becoming and change are important parts. For me, “becoming” represents the ongoing journey of remembering who we truly are beneath our conditioning and evolving into who we are becoming, while “the change” is about orienting that personal journey towards the wellbeing of the whole and being of service to a better future. Together, they reflect my belief that our individual becoming is the greatest contribution we can make to a more just and regenerative future. I talk about my vision for what this movement might become: a place where people navigating the liminal space of inner transformation can come together in community to be together and support one another. Through gatherings in nature, retreats, walks, conversations, mindfulness, movement, creativity, and shared practice, I hope to create spaces where we can be fully human, embrace the messiness of becoming, and embody more heart-led ways of living and leading. I share why I’ve decided to use the word movement rather than a business or organisation, and why I believe the inner and outer cannot be separated and everything starts from within. I explore some limitations I found in some personal development spaces - where it’s focused solely on the self without outer world responsibility - and in social and environmental change - where I found some were unconsciously driven by fear, shame, or the need to prove our worth through the worthiness of our cause. Becoming the Change is an invitation to see our contribution and purpose in a different way: where we recognise ourselves as already whole and enough, and interconnected with all that is and the journey of becoming being about answering our call to contribute from the heart to the greater good. This episode is for anyone who finds themselves in the in-between space: questioning old ways of living, knowing that something new is emerging and taking steps towards the new way of being, and looking for companions on the journey. If it resonates with you, please reach out, I would love to connect with others on a similar journey. On Becoming the Change is part of the Becoming the Change movement for people who are getting to know themselves more deeply, exploring how to contribute to a more just and regenerative future, and looking for a more fulfilling, energising, and easeful way of doing that. On accepting what is

In this episode of On Becoming the Change, I explore the practice of accepting what is and how learning to accept ourselves, other people, and the world as it is can be one of the most direct ways to find greater peace, freedom, and ease. Inspired by a week where lots of things didn’t go as I’d hoped, I reflect on how much energy we can spend resisting reality, wishing things were different, or believing that we, other people, or life situations should be something other than they are. We explore why acceptance is not about giving up, becoming passive, or lowering our standards, instead about meeting life as it is so we can respond more consciously from the present moment. We look at self-acceptance as the foundation for meaningful change, and why we cannot shame, criticise, or reject ourselves into becoming who we want to be. Instead, real transformation often comes through self-compassion, understanding, and learning to accept and embrace all parts of ourselves. We also explore how the parts of ourselves we struggle to accept often shape how we judge and relate to others, and how curiosity and understanding can deepen our relationships and connection, as well as the importance of understanding and honouring our own needs and boundaries. We also explore how acceptance can be helpful when dealing with the state of the world. In times of uncertainty, complexity and change, acceptance can help us let go of the internal battles we have with reality and can help us to be with what’s here now and allow ourselves to feel, without getting carried away in stories. And how we can find more clarity and ability to respond when we trade expectations for acceptance. Throughout the episode, I share reflections from teachings of mindfulness and my take on teachings from Thich Nhat Hanh, Tara Brach, Carl Jung, and Peter Crone, alongside practical ways to cultivate acceptance in everyday life. This episode is for anyone who finds themselves wanting to practice more acceptance in their lives and reflect on how acceptance can bring us back to the present moment, where we often find more peace, energy, clarity and joy and feel more like ourselves. The podcast is part of the Becoming the Change movement for people who are getting to know themselves more deeply, exploring how to contribute to a more just and regenerative future, and looking for a more fulfilling, energising, and easeful way of doing that. The Potential of Becoming

In this episode, I explore a question that has sat at the heart of my own journey: how do we respond to the global crises of our time in a way that feels adequate? When there’s an emergency in front of us, we often know what to do. We act. We respond. But when we’re faced with climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, and the many interconnected challenges facing our world, it can feel very different. The problems are vast, complex, and often beyond our control. For many of us, this can leave us feeling overwhelmed, powerless, fearful, or questioning whether what we’re doing is enough. I share my own experience of working in sustainability, doing all the “right” sustainable behaviours, and dedicating my career to creating positive impact, yet still feeling like it wasn't enough. I explore how living in a constant state of anticipatory fear about the future can affect our wellbeing, our creativity, and our ability to respond effectively to the challenges we care about. We explore the relationship between our inner world and our capacity to create change. We look at how awareness of what’s happening in the world can contract us into hopelessness and scarcity, and how reconnecting with ourselves can help us move into a more generative, expansive, and creative state. We discuss the importance of taking care of our own wellbeing alongside caring for the planet and others, finding peace in enoughness while also expanding our consciousness beyond the limitations we’ve placed on ourselves and what’s possible. We explore how becoming aware of the stories, beliefs, and assumptions that shape our lives allows us to transform them, and how self-awareness, self-leadership, authenticity, and compassion can help us step into our capacity as creators. This episode is an invitation to consider what change could become possible when we come back to ourselves. When we align with who we truly are, connect with what gives us energy, learn to navigate difficult emotions, and create from a place of presence rather than fear. Because perhaps creating a more regenerative future isn’t just about what we do, but about who we become in the process. On just starting the thing

In the first episode of Series 2, I talk about perfectionism - what it really is, where it comes from, and why doing something imperfectly and just starting might actually be one of the most powerful things we can do. I share my own experience of sitting on this podcast for over a year waiting for everything to feel ready, and explore the fears that keep us stuck, why clarity comes through doing rather than thinking, and how the act of starting is itself an act of becoming. If you're sitting on something you haven't started or taken action on yet, this one's for you. We also explore understanding our ‘why’ for what we want to do, getting intentional about our time and how we use it, taking off the pressure of expectation or outcome and the value in taking baby steps. We look at how ‘should’s’ and ‘ought to’s’ can keep us stuck and how resistance and fear may sit behind our procrastination. And we look at what choices you really want to make to align your life with the person you want to become and the change you want to see. The podcast is part of the Becoming the Change movement - for people who are getting to know themselves more deeply, exploring how to contribute to a more just and regenerative future, and looking for a more fulfilling, energising and easeful way of doing that. On being courageous and living authentically - with Vanessa May

In this episode of On Becoming the Change, I speak with Vanessa May, a coach who helps women find courage and authenticity in their lives. We explore what it means to embrace your true self, navigate big life changes, and build a life aligned with your values. We explore: * What it means to live as the truest and most authentic version of yourself and finding the bravery to step into your purpose and the life you were built for * The challenges and opportunities of being a highly sensitive person or empath * How big life changes, like divorce or break-ups, can create opportunities for growth and transformation * Understanding how early experiences, like being an under or over ‘achiever’ at school, shape us and how to reframe limiting beliefs * Breaking free from people-pleasing, fixing others, and learning how to set empowering boundaries * Recognising your triggers and creating healthier, more authentic relationships with yourself and others * Overcoming shame and our shadow parts and how by embracing and accepting all parts of ourselves, we allow this for others too * How we mask our true selves to try and fit in and what happens when we try to be someone for other people, rather than being ourselves * Regulating our nervous system and being able to live at edge of our comfort zone to grow Vanessa shares her empowering insights and experience that may encourage you to live a more courageous and authentic life. This is a very open conversation where we both share parts our personal challenges and the work we’ve done to overcome them. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, and a big thank you to Vanessa for joining the podcast.
