Academics love fundamentals. A good trader should be familiar with both. Fundamental analysis is a method used to evaluate the intrinsic value of a company or security by examining its financial statements, economic conditions, and industry trends. Technical analysts focus entirely on price movements and trading volume. That is, human behavior tends to repeat itself, so by studying past patterns, technical traders aim to predict future price moves. Fundamental investors often ask: 'Is this company undervalued or overvalued?' Technical traders ask: 'Where is the price likely to move next based on momentum and sentiment?' Fundamentalists care about what they’re buying. Technicians care about when they’re buying. The truth is: many of the best traders and investors use a blend of both. You might pick high-quality companies using fundamentals—and time your entries using technicals.
