Ep 26 - Change Happens to You, Transition Happens Within You

Most people confuse change with transition, but they're completely different processes. Change is external—you move cities, lose a job, get divorced. It's the obvious shift from point A to point B. Transition is the inner psychological journey of letting go of your old identity, spending time in uncertainty, then eventually embracing who you're becoming. Without proper transition, change becomes just "rearranging the furniture"—nothing really transforms inside you. That's why people can go through major life shifts yet remain stuck emotionally for years.  Real transition involves three stages: ending the old chapter (even when it's scary), navigating the confusing middle ground where you don't know what's next, and finally stepping into a new beginning you couldn't have imagined from your starting point. The key insight? You can't see your new beginning while you're still holding onto your old identity. Learning to transition well is what separates those who thrive through change from those who get left behind. Any thoughts or questions? Send me a text! Thanks for listening! See you again soon. Ep 25 - What Nature teaches, we should learn

Why Nature Always Wins: Life Lessons from a Fallen Tree That Will Change How You See Control, Humility & Your Place in the World During a routine morning dog walk, I noticed something I had walked past many times before. But this time, I stopped and contemplated a new perspective. There, in the middle of a beautifully managed bush reserve, a massive gum tree had crashed down, flattening everything in its path despite all the careful human planning and maintenance by Council staff. It reminded me of a fundamental truth we often forget: nature is the ultimate reality, and it always has the final say. In this episode, I explain three insights I gained: Embrace humility over control - We can influence many things, but we're never the final arbiter. Accepting this reduces stress and unrealistic expectations.Work with natural patterns, not against them - Aligning our decisions with nature's rhythms leads to better outcomes, like avoiding building on unstable ground.Actively appreciate our temporary place - Understanding we're part of something larger brings both psychological benefits and deeper gratitude for this brief, meaningful experience we call life. Ep 23 - The Oyster-catcher: What happens when we turn down the noise

In this episode, I talk about my trip to Great Barrier Island, about 95km from Auckland, visiting friends who ditched their corporate lives in their late 50s for a simpler existence. No TV, no news, no social media, and definitely no traffic noise – just the natural world around us. Walking along the coast on day two, I found myself sitting on rocks, watching the tide move seaweed around beneath the surface. It got me thinking about how rare these quiet moments are in our everyday lives. Let's be honest – we fill our days with constant noise. We rush from bed to work, meeting to meeting, then flop on the couch for TV while scrolling through our phones. And maybe there's a reason for all this busyness – we're uncomfortable with what might bubble up if we actually slow down. During my "off-the-grid" time, I found an injured Oyster-catcher bird. That small moment of helping this lovely little creature became very meaningful. As I watched it recover, something clicked: I was able to enjoy this moment because I took the time to be available for whatever came along. The takeaway? When we turn down the volume on life's distractions, we create space for the stuff that really matters to surface naturally. Any thoughts or questions? Send me a text! Thanks for listening! Ep 21 - You go first

If you’re a human being - and I’m guessing you are - then you have lots of relationships. And while many might be healthy, enjoyable and good chances are there are one or two that have some kind of stress, or are not as good as you’d like. Maybe, there is one that has just broken and you’d still like to see it mended. In this episode, I talk about how important relationships with my birth mother and my Dad went through a cold or even non-existent phase, but both are now wonderfully warm, engaging and loving. It doesn’t always work out like that, but I discuss some principles of approach that will give it the best chance of success. Ones you can try too. This can apply to relationships with your spouse, ex, parent, child or friend. Duration: 11mins 52s Key points Strong relationships are essential for life satisfaction, but naturally change over timeBroken family bonds create loneliness — reconciliation is worth the effortTake the first step — make the call, offer forgiveness, start the processSet realistic expectations — healing takes time and initial attempts may falterConsider their perspective — they might feel nervous about reconnecting tooKeep early conversations light — avoid difficult questions and build comfort graduallyEven partial reconnections can become meaningful and enhance your lifeIf first attempts fail, try again or accept the outcome with gracePersonal stories show that patience can repair even deeply fractured family relationshipsThe potential reward of restored connection outweighs the risk of rejection.Worth repeating "Sometimes, the very attempt can soften a hardened heart in ways you'd least expect." Ep 20 - The Values Problem: Why Your Happiness Depends on Alignment

Do you feel discontent in your relationships, career, or daily life at times, despite outwardly having what you want? The answer often lies in a values problem - a misalignment between what we truly value deep down, and how we actually live. When our behaviours don't match our core values, we can experience tension, which can look like unhappiness, stress, or even physical symptoms.  In this episode, we discuss why this happens, give some examples to illustrate, and suggest how you can close the gap. Key Points Our behaviour reveals our actual values, regardless of what we claim to value.Values conflicts are often the root cause of relationship problems and career dissatisfaction.Signs of values misalignment include persistent unhappiness, stress, and sometimes physical symptoms. Two main solutions: either adjust your stated values to match reality or change your situation to align with your values. The importance of brutally honest self-reflection in identifying what’s truly important to you.How to navigate values differences in relationships through communication and compromise. Why temporary discomfort during values realignment leads to long-term fulfilment.Practical steps for bringing your daily choices into harmony with what matters most to you.Any thoughts or questions? Ep 19 - Life is like a pile of blankets

As we go about life we inevitably move to a script, a narrative, an identity. You would think that this identity is consciously decided. But after many years on the road, the reality is that we’re shaped by the influences and expectations we have accumulated from who we’ve been with, what we’ve experienced, and messages we’ve seen/read/heard. In this episode, we explore what this feels like and look at examples like the feeling that you are there to serve others’ needs, that no one will find you attractive in your 60s, or being stuck in work you no longer enjoy. ☕️ Grab a cuppa and put your headphones on for the next few minutes because there is hope… Key points Meditation is not a weird practice; it’s paying focused attention so you can listen to what comes back to you from your emotions, mind and environment. In your life, you realise that there is much that you carry or pay attention to that isn’t serving you well, like a pile of blankets you’ve accumulated. Some blankets are self-imposed while many others are imposed by others/your culture/society’s expectations.Finding a more genuine self is not about adding things on, but more like taking things off.Four strategies that might help: Give voice to your thoughts by writing them down; notice whether they’re helpful or hindering; permit yourself to say no - in fact, use assertive language; do some self-enquiry and clarify what’s important to you in your identity, relationships and work.Worth repeating “(Take steps to) help the real you see the light of day, or it might remain somewhat smothered.” Any thoughts or questions?
