    S9E6 (Ep 103) How Labor Day Actually Became A Holiday / Ranking Every Labor Day Tradition

    Labor Day started as a day of protest for exhausted workers. Now it's a three-day weekend of mattress sales, beach traffic, and cookouts. This week we cover how we got from one to the other. Christina takes the science-and-history chair for the history of Labor Day itself. She walks through the labor movement that made the holiday necessary, the union parade in 1882 that became the blueprint, the strike that shocked the country and pushed Congress to make it federal in 1894, and the quiet reason a president who was actively fighting striking workers signed it into law anyway. It's a shorter history than you'd think, and messier. Then Caleb takes it live. He built a ranking sheet of every major way Americans celebrate Labor Day now, and ranks them in real time.     S10E5 (Ep 102) Who Was William Tyndale? The Story Behind The English Bible

    He was strangled and burned at the stake for translating the Bible into English. The King James Bible you know today? Roughly 84% of the New Testament is his exact words. And his last words were a prayer that got answered less than a year after he died. This week we take on William Tyndale. For our next joint episode, Caleb and Christina tag-team one of the most quietly consequential figures in Western history. We start with his early life: the brilliant Oxford-educated linguist, the priest who watched ordinary people fumble through Latin scriptures they couldn't understand, and the moment he decided he'd translate the Bible into English himself or die trying. Turned out to be both. From there we trace his years on the run through Europe. The secret print runs smuggled into England in bales of cloth. The bounties on his head. The King and the Church that wanted him silenced. And the friend who eventually betrayed him for money, leading to his arrest, imprisonment, and execution in 1536. Then we get to the part that lands hardest. His final recorded words were "Lord, open the King of England's eyes." Within a year of his death, Henry VIII authorized an English Bible for every church in the country.     S9E2 (Ep 99) William Wilberforce: The 20-Year Fight To End The British Slave Trade

    He spent 20 years getting laughed out of Parliament before he finally won. Three days after the law he'd fought for his whole life passed, he died. This week we take on William Wilberforce.For our second-ever joint episode, Caleb and Christina team up on one of history's most quietly important figures. We start with his early life: the wealthy son of a Yorkshire merchant, the reluctant politician, and the religious conversion in his twenties that gave him a moral mission he couldn't put down. From there we walk through the two decades he spent introducing anti-slave-trade bills over and over again, getting shot down by his own government, being publicly ridiculed, and refusing to stop.We cover the coalition he built (Quakers, freed enslaved Africans, everyday citizens signing petitions in numbers no one had ever seen), the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, and the final push that led to the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833. The bill passed on July 26th. Wilberforce died three days later, on the 29th.Then we get to the part that matters most: what Wilberforce actually tells us about how change happens.     Season 8 is officially wrapped. To close it out we do the two lists every listener has been asking us to rank: the episodes we loved the most, and the episodes we learned the most from. Then we hand the mic to Season 8 itself and let it play us out. In the first half we each pick our favorites. The topics that were the most fun to research, the segments that made us laugh the hardest in the recording chair, and the episodes we'd recommend to anyone brand new to the show. Some picks were obvious. A few surprised even us. Then we shift into what we actually learned. Not just the wild facts (though there are plenty of those), but the moments where a topic changed the way we think about something. The ones where we walked away from the mic quieter than we came in. To close things out, we stitched together a compilation of the funniest clips from Season 8. All the moments that made us break, the lines we still quote to each other, and the tangents that had no business being as good as they were.     S8E12 (Ep 96) Adolf Hitler: Childhood, Rise To Power, And How To Never Repeat History

    He was rejected from art school twice, decorated as a soldier in WWI, and less than 20 years later he'd orchestrate the deaths of over 17 million people. This week Caleb and Christina both take on the same topic together: Adolf Hitler. We start with Hitler's childhood in Austria (the abusive father, the doting mother, the failed art career, the years spent broke and homeless in Vienna) and trace how a nobody with a grudge climbed the ranks of a fringe political party to become chancellor of Germany. From there we cover the machinery of the Third Reich, the Holocaust, and the roughly 6 million Jewish people plus 11 million others killed under his regime. Then we get to the part that matters most: what warning signs were there, what did ordinary Germans miss or ignore, and what should any of us watch for in ourselves, our leaders, and our own moment in history. Because "how did this happen" is only useful if it becomes "how do we make sure it doesn't happen again." Two hosts. One of the worst people who ever lived. A conversation about how it happened, and how to make sure it doesn't happen to us.
