Good Grief, the Rain – with Special Guest Kenyada Meadows

subscribe to my poetic newsletter: rosejah.substack.com Hi Friends, It is my absolute pleasure that today’s poem is “Good Grief, the Rain”, written and presented by the talented Kenyada Meadows. Born in the Bahamas, Kenyada’s journey has taken him from the mountains in Denver to the busy streets of New York City, where he has lived for the past decade. When I first met Kenyada, I was struck by the rare blend of his exquisitely sharp intellect and profound artistic sensitivity. By day, he navigates the financial currents of Wall Street; by night, he gracefully explores the depth and complexities of the human condition. Kenyada is the author of the poetry collection “Afloat, Atop A Marbled Sea”, and he also hosts the podcast Executive Dads, which discusses the challenges and solutions for working fathers striving to find fulfillment at home and in their careers. Today, Kenyada offers us “Good Grief, the Rain”, a poem written during a rainy day in New York City. I hope it resonates with you as deeply as it did with me: Good Grief, The Rain. by Kenyada Meadows Good grief,The rain. Good for writing. And coffee. Good for what becomes words on paper, And roasted beans in a paper cup. Good for whiskey. For cuddling. For deliberation. Meditation. And Massages. Simply sitting and listening To the outside world engage with itself,Succumbing to the wet, life-giving. While the dusty becomes clean,The dust swells, takes on weight, And aggregates. There is intimacy in rain. When everything is wet. But is indeed life– yet why do we complain? The breasts of the sky sating we earthly sucklings, Too dry of mind, history’s pages too brittle to recall That we should be out dancing like our forefathers– Not running and ducking and hiding inside. Before they could read books, They could read the earth and sky,Kept fires burning,And their spirits lit– In the rain. In this poem Kenyada reflects on the rain which becomes a metaphor for grief – a necessary process that cleanses and renews us. Just as rain brings life to the earth, grief, too, has a vital place in life’s cycles. Kenyada reminds us to “succumb to the wet, life-giving,” power of these moments, urging us to embrace rain and grief alike, not as inconveniences, but as essential forces that shape and transform us. Our ancestors danced in the rain, celebrating its vitality and leaning into its rhythms. In the same way, Kenyada suggests, we should let grief wash over us, trusting it to cleanse and transform us. Instead of resisting, we might find deeper intimacy with life by moving with grief, rather than against it. We are encouraged to step out, to let both rain and grief touch us, reminding us that transformation often begins with surrender. We’re invited to embrace the next rainy day as a moment to reconnect with the world and with ourselves subscribe to my poetic newsletter: rosejah.substack.com Prompts for reflection: 1. 🌦Let your emotions move through you: Think about a time when you resisted difficult emotions, like grief or sadness. What might have changed if you had allowed yourself to “move with” those feelings instead of resisting them? 2. 🌦Visualize the rain: Now, imagine the rain falling on you and washing over your body. Feel each drop landing on your skin. With each drop, imagine a thought, worry or pain being cleansed away. What do you feel it’s washing away? What is it helping to grow? 3. 🌦Invite ancestral resilience: Think of your ancestors or past generations. How might they have danced with life’s challenges differently than we do now? What lessons can you take from their resilience Reading suggestions: * 🌦Poetry Book: “Loss – Poems to better manage the many waves of grief” by Donna Ashworth * 🌦Poem: Lotus Rain: A Poetic Journey of Transformation and Renewal by Rose Jah 💛If this resonates with you, it will mean the world to me if you subscribed to my newsletter, shared this piece, or left a comment below.💛 Love 💛 Rose subscribe to my poetic newsletter: rosejah.substack.com Get full access to Soul Ink at rosejah.substack.com/subscribe

    Call Me Into Presence

Subscribe to my poetic newletter here: rosejah.substack.com Hi Friends, Happy New Year once again! I’m excited to share with you my new poem, “Call Me Into Presence.” I wish for all of you to be fully present in this New Year and in your lives. In our fast-paced world, it’s so easy to get caught up in endless to-do lists, lost in nostalgia, or weighed down by regrets from the past, or anxieties about the future. It can feel like we’re constantly running from one moment to the next, missing the beauty and richness of the present. Across many wisdom traditions around the world, one shared truth is that true self-actualization happens when we embrace and dwell fully in the now—when we cultivate presence. Call me Into Presence Call me into presence, into the here and now, into this space— right here, on the ground—into my bodyCall me into presence, away from lingeringin the past and future, away from wandering in my mindCall me into presence. Call me into beingwhen I am busy becoming Call me into letting gowhen I want to hold on.Call me into trying softerwhen I push harder. Call me into surrender—to this: what is, and into releasing the struggle,a fight already wonas I let go. 💜💜💜 If you resonate with this poem, it would mean so much to me if you subscribe, share it, or leave a comment. 💜💜💜 Here are two wonderful books that I higly recommend on the topic of presence: * “The power of now: A guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” by Eckard Tolle * “The book of awakending: Having the Life you want” by Mark Nepo Love 💜, Rose Subscribe to my poetic newletter here: rosejah.substack.com Get full access to Soul Ink at rosejah.substack.com/subscribe

Last Day of the Year, Last Day of Your Life

Last Day of the Year, Last Day of Your Life 💛rosejah.substack.com💛Today is the last day of the year. But what if this last day of the yearis also the last day of your life? You can hear the Angel of Death nearby, counting down the time with you:10, 9, 8, 7, ….What began as a reflection of the year now turns, with no turning back, into a reflection of your lifetime. You gaze into the mirror of your days:Did you live courageously?Did you take risks for love?Did you take time for friends?Did you unfold the unique gift that you brought to the world? As the end draws closeryou ask yourself: What have I done with this life? Why did I dim the brilliance of my one “wild and precious life”?and dim its brilliance? Why did I refuse to step into the immensity of my own soul, choosing instead to hold myself hostage to tiny thoughts and dark imaginationswhen I could have stretched in the endless joy of being alive? Why did I cling so tightly to grudges and blame, weighing down my heart, when I could have stepped into ‘the field beyond right and wrongdoing’Why did I sing the song of victimhood, when I could have beenthe protagonist, the heroof my own unfolding story?Oh, my Darling-Dear,you see it now. Time slipped through your fingers, as you spent your days complaining about boredom and lack purpose – But now you understand – your life would not have been in vain“if you had stopped just one heart from breaking”In truth, it would have meant everything“if you had helped the fainting robin onto its nest again.” Oh Love, you see this nowthis truth floods you at lastand you want to go back to have more timeto hold on to your lifeto invest your heartto deepen your presencebut the Angel of Deathstands resolutecounting down your time with unyielding resolve: 6, 5, 4, … Desperately, you call onto the Angel of Life:Grant me one more chance to live!Give me one more chance to truly live! I implore you! You beg, you plead, you swear that you understand it now. And then, miraculously, time pauses, the moment hangs suspended, as if the universe itself holds its breath. Under the grace and mercy of the Great Divinethe two Angels – Death and Life – confer, and together they strike a deal. Together they begin to count anew: 3,2,1.And so, you are granted another chance. You may live. You may step into the New Year. But now you will live knowingthat Life and Death are inseparable twins, each holding the wisdom of the other. Seeing them both clearly Not just life but also deathoffers you the gift to live fully. Will you? May you be blessed to have the courage to live your lifeas the rare and precious gift that it is. May you live fully. A Beautiful Man

A Beautiful Man Yesterday,I took a winter walkwrapped in my warm coat, with gloves and a scarfbreathing the crisp, cold air,I watched the winter at play:The world felt hushed, The landscape reduced to its essence,a simple, serene scene. Trees stood barewithout leavesholding up their many brancheslike arms reaching for lightwhile their roots anchored deeply below, hidden in the frozen earth. I marveled at the trees, with their graceful silhouettesetched against the clear, bright sky. Each twist and turntelling a quiet story. And then, from afar,I saw a man approaching. Before his details came into view,I could already feel his warmth. As he came closermy eyes were drawn to his face which held me in quiet awe. It was as though I looked upon the trees again, their branches mirrored in the lines on his face, like delicate threadsunravelling the story of his life. A story I could not know, but one I could sense in the depth of his gentle expression. In those fleeting moments, as we passed one another, my gaze rested on him, drawn to an unspoken beauty. His face, softened by a tender smilewas embellished with exquisite linesthat spoke of himand a life well-lived,of challenges met with grace,of kindness and warmth,of courageand of gratitude that refused to fade. And I thought: What a beautiful man.In that brief encounter, he left me a gift – a quiet reminder of something profound:We are all artistsWe are all paintersWe are the ones shaping the contours of our faces, painting the lines of our lives. We choose to paint our stories in joy and love,or bitterness and fear,We etch our laughter or our sorrow into tales, leaving our marks on the canvas of our skin. We are the oneswho paint our faces. I turned to my sister .walking by my sideI looked in her facemirroring my own and I thought:Oh, let us live in such a way that in old age our faceswill be etchedwith deep lines of love, of warmthof hearts wide openand brimming with gratitude for life – for all that it gives and all that it takes. And with that wish, I smiled - inviting joy into my being, thereby putting myself to workwith a mindset that paints our liveswith beautiful linesallowing grace to branch out and take rootin my face. Prompts for reflection: * Reflect on a time you encountered a stranger who left an impression on you. What about them caught your attention, and what did you take away from that moment? * Think about the “canvas” of your own life. What stories, emotions, or moments have shaped you so far? * What choices or attitudes are you currently painting onto your face and heart? And remember, you always have the choice to paint things differently. You are the author of your life and the artist of your face. * Imagine yourself in old age. What do you hope others will see and sense when they look at you? * Reflect on the people closest to you. What “lines” or stories do their faces tell, and how do those reflect their lives? 💛💛💛 If you like the poem, it will mean a lot to me if you subscribe, share it, or leave a comment. 💛💛💛 Love, 💛Rose Recent posts: * Interrogating Loneliness * Tell me about your Wrongdoings * You the Phoenix * Lotus Rain: A Poetic Journey of Transformation and Renewal * Let your friends take care of you * The Art of Letting Go: Lessons from Autumn Leaves Get full access to Soul Ink at rosejah.substack.com/subscribe
