Behind the Spotlight: A Look at Gender and Racial Pay Gaps in Hollywood

Send us Fan Mail In this episode we break down the complex pay gaps in Hollywood affecting white women and women of color. We explore how gender and racial inequalities collide to create systemic wage disparities and discuss the broader implications for the entertainment industry. But first we're yapping about hawk attacks, women supporting women, and guy's girls. Then we're circling back to our ongoing conversation on beauty standards and breaking down how our participation affects us as individuals and society as a whole with a little lesson on desirability politics. Next, it's time for a reality check and we're diving into the Bravo TV drama on the most recent episodes of The Valley and In The City. Then it's time to get in the weeds with a look at the Hollywood wage gap. We're bringing you some facts about what female stars have been paid versus their male counterparts as well as what women of color have been paid vs their white female counterparts. We're breaking down the secretive and discriminatory Hollywood pay structures and contracts that have systematically quelled women's earnings for years. We also discuss the 2014 Sony Pictures information leak and Jennifer Lawrence's 2015 essay titled, "Why do I Make Less Than My Male Costars" that sparked progress and change. Finally we're highlighting some ways in which women have combatted the pay gap, fought for their deserved equal pay, and are actively creating avenues to advance the careers of women of color who are still lingering significantly behind. As always we wrap it up with gripes about software updates and traffic emergencies and grapes to lounge wear and new tech accessories. Join us! Disclaimer: We are still new to virtual recording and we had some audio hiccups. Parts of the episode aren't the best quality so apologies for that. Pop Culture Archives: The Disappearance of Lauren Spierer (Part 2)

Send us Fan Mail On this special edition episode of Pop Culture Archives, we dig deep into the disappearance of Lauren Spierer, a vibrant 20-year-old Indiana University student who vanished from our hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, in the early morning hours of June 3, 2011 — exactly 15 years ago today. Known for her kindness, generosity, and deep Jewish faith, Lauren’s story has haunted Bloomington and beyond for over a decade. Until recently, details available to the public pertaining to Lauren's case have been few and far between. In 2024, Shawn Cohen a journalist and one of the first on the case, published his book, College Girl, Missing bringing to light an abundance of information never released to the public and while what happened to Lauren remains one of true crime's biggest mysteries we now have a more precise timeline than ever of the hours leading up to her disappearance. In this part 2 episode (refer to part 1 before listening to part 2) we cover the investigation, the Spierer family's lawsuit against the persons of interest, the many tips and theories that have emerged over the past 15 years, our own thoughts and opinions as to what could have happened, as well an exclusive interview with a friend who was an eyewitness in the case and saw Lauren the night she disappeared.  We're also hopping back on at the end after a few days of reflection to address some holes in the book as well some expanded thoughts on specific details and theories. This is a case we lived in real time as young girls in Bloomington not much older than Lauren. We have thought and talked about it often year after year as Lauren remains missing and theories have developed. We want more than anything for her family to have answers and closure. If you know anything regarding this case or any of the key players please call in tips to the Bloomington Police Department, Bloomington Indiana as this is very much still an ongoing investigation. The smallest detail could be the break in the case that brings Lauren home.  Follow us on IG, TikTok, and subscribe to our YouTube   https://www.instagram.com/shesintheweedspod/ https://www.tiktok.com/@shesintheweedspod https://www.youtube.com/@shesintheweedspod

Pop Culture Archives: A Look at Cultural Appropriation, Stereotypes, and Consent in Havoc (Trigger Warning)

Send us Fan Mail It's pop culture archives and we're diving into the 2005 film Havoc to explore it's themes of cultural appropriation, rich white teen culture, gang representation, racial dynamics, sexual assault (TW), and the conversation around consent. There's a lot to unpack especially viewing the film through a post Me Too and Black Lives Matter lens. This movie attempted to convey important messages but misses the mark in so many ways. The film follows a group of wealthy white Los Angeles teenagers who spend their days imitating gang lifestyle and forming a crew they call the PLC. Fed up with their "boring" lives the female members of the PLC embark on a journey to find "real gangsters" and chaos ensues when they encounter the East LA 16th Street Crew. The film is layered and problematic in it's portrayal of cultural appropriation by the white teens and the "real" 16th Street Crew which was inspired by the 18th Street Gang, one of the largest and most notorious Latino Street gangs in Los Angeles history. The film also fumbles through a story of sexual assault which only serves to perpetuate stereotypes around gang life and criminal activity pertaining to minorities as well as blur the lines in the conversation around consent. The movie provides no resolution to any of the conflicts that arise and viewers are left wondering what is the message here? As always we wrap up the episode with gripes about inflation and keyboard warriors who can't get it right and grapes to fitness tech and analog listening. See you in the weeds!
