Dave Graney talks with Melbourne guitarist and songwriter Marcel Borrack.

Marcel Borrack talking with Dave Graney in regard to his 2026 instrumental album. Sun Dust. "Several years ago, I came across the documentary Music of Satyajit Ray and was completely captivated. His creative process, and the music itself resonates deeply with the natural world. Sonically the productions are bold, inventive, and full of character. They use space masterfully to create mood and drama, and they strive for individuality over blandness, or at least that’s what I hear. Sun Dust is a collection of instrumental music inspired by Ray’s work. On Sun Dust I use Indian instruments such as sitar and bansuri but acoustic guitar is at the heart of the music. While Ray's work was an important touchstone throughout the project, the intention was not to create a pastiche, but to use it as a foundation for my own musical explorations. Over time I’ve developed a guitar tuning that allows melodies to emerge naturally, forming the basis of each composition. From these initial ideas the pieces gradually unfold through layers of overdubbed instruments including banjo and mandolin, with melodies weaving around one another in an ongoing conversation. The process is intuitive and exploratory allowing each piece to find its own shape and character. I wanted the music to evoke a sense of the organic: sitting beside a river, the solemnity of a forest, or the feeling of hot sun on your skin. Exploring these visceral sensations was an appealing departure from my usual approach to songwriting. It offered a way to be creatively adventurous while gaining a fresh perspective on the music-making process. I like to think of it as film music without a film. For me, writing music is something I want to do every day. I’m constantly seeking to explore, learn and evolve, so bringing new sounds, influences and ideas into my projects will always be an important part of that journey."

Dave Graney talking with musician and songwriter Dan Brodie

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Brodie was raised in a musical family, his father, a professional guitarist and singer taught Brodie the basic chords of guitar and piano and along with his brother Chris, they began making music together, playing as fast and loud as they could to whoever would listen, not letting their lack of experience get in the way of having a good time, and honing their skills of playing live to an audience. In 2001, Brodie, with his band the Broken Arrows, signed to EMI Australia and Last Call Records in France and has worked with esteemed producers and engineers Oz Fritz (Tom Waits), John Wooler (Iggy Pop, John Lee Hooker) and Rick Will (Robbie Fulks, Mark Lanegan) and played with a diverse range of artists including The Strokes, Steve Earle, El Vez, Chris Bailey (Saints), Arthur Lee (Love), The White Stripes and Gillian Welsh. His musical talents have taken him to the U.S., U.K., France, Spain and New Zealand playing such iconic venues as CBGB in New York, The Continental in Austin, The Exit/In in Nashville and The Olympia in Paris. Brodie’s talents are recognised in his native Australia with two ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards for his second album, EMPTY ARMS, BROKEN HEARTS as well as an unfaltering reputation as an incredible live performer with acclaimed appearances at festivals such as the Big Day Out, Byron Bay Bluesfest and Splendour in the Grass. 2026 album is Suburban Dreaming. Conceived during lockdown and completed over five years, Suburban Dreaming drifts between spoken word, poetry, memoir and song. Moving between intimate confession and surreal observation, it finds beauty, longing and turmoil in the shadows of everyday life.
