If All You Do Is Complain, You're the Problem

Everybody knows this person. Nothing is ever good enough. New policy? They bitch about it. New training? They bitch about it. New equipment? They'll find something wrong with it. Another fire department posts something online? They're immediately in the comments telling everyone how much smarter they are. Enough. In this episode of the Please Suck Less Podcast, we're talking about the pessimists, keyboard warriors, chronic complainers, and professional nitpickers who suck the life out of the firehouse. The fire service isn't perfect. Leadership isn't perfect. Policies aren't perfect. Sometimes good ideas roll out badly. So what? If there's a legitimate problem, identify it. Bring a solution. Give leadership an opportunity to fix it. Help make the organization better. But if your biggest contribution to the fire service is bitching on social media, hitting "reply all," and telling everybody else what they're doing wrong, maybe the problem isn't the department. Maybe it's you. Before you complain about some meaningless piece of crap, ask yourself: Do you have good apparatus? Good equipment? Good turnout gear? Good training? Good people? If the answer is yes, maybe you've got it a hell of a lot better than you think. Put down the keyboard. Get off the couch. Pull some hose. Throw a ladder. Train your people. Read something. Teach something. Learn something. CONTRIBUTE. Because if you have enough time to constantly tell everybody what's wrong with the fire service, you damn sure have enough time to help make it better. Stop bitching. Start contributing. Do Better. Suck Less.

The The Fire Service Doesn't Revolve Around You

Somebody's probably going to get pissed off about this one. Good. Somewhere along the way, we've started confusing legitimate problems with personal preferences. We've convinced ourselves that if one person doesn't like something, the entire firehouse has to change to accommodate them. That's not how this works. In this episode, I'm talking about: 🔥 Why one firefighter doesn't get to define the culture of an entire shift 🔥 The difference between harassment and hurt feelings 🔥 Why dark humor, colorful language, and thick skin have always been part of firehouse life 🔥 The danger of recruiting warm bodies instead of capable firefighters 🔥 Why physical fitness, mental toughness, and accountability still matter 🔥 The importance of finding people who can do the job instead of lowering standards to fill seats Let me be crystal clear: We do not tolerate harassment. We do not tolerate racism. We do not tolerate sexism. But we're also not going to rebuild the entire fire service because one person doesn't like how firefighters talk, joke, or cope with the realities of this job. The fire service isn't a corporate office. It's a profession built on trust, sacrifice, grit, and the ability to rely on the person next to you when everything goes sideways. If that message makes you uncomfortable, you're probably the person this episode is for. 👉 Listen. 👉 Share it. 👉 Tell me I'm wrong. Do Better. Suck Less.
