Kansas State’s Run Defense Has a MASSIVE Problem to Fix vs. Houston

Kansas State football has one glaring problem it must fix before facing Houston: the run defense. The Wildcats allowed Cincinnati to rush for 271 yards and three touchdowns, including nine rushing plays that gained at least 10 yards. Missed tackles, poor gap integrity and explosive plays turned what had looked like a strong K-State defense into a major concern. Now Houston gets its opportunity to attack the same weakness. Collin Klein and Kansas State had the entire bye week to find answers, because the Wildcats cannot allow another opponent to control the game on the ground. It starts with the defensive front winning its assignments. The linebackers have to clean things up at the second level. Most importantly, K-State has to tackle better and prevent routine runs from becoming explosive plays. Was Cincinnati simply one terrible performance? Kansas State’s Season Could HINGE on What Happens vs. Houston

Kansas State football enters its matchup against Houston with very little margin for error after the Cincinnati loss. This could become an early Big 12 Championship elimination game. Collin Klein's Wildcats had the bye week to respond, and players described the Cincinnati loss as lighting a fire under the team. Now they have to prove it. Avery Johnson says he's 100% and that his body feels as good as it has at this point in a season. He also spent part of the bye week working with Patrick Mahomes' trainer. But Houston presents a brutal test. The Cougars have one of the best rushing defenses in college football, allowing just 65.5 yards per game entering this matchup. That creates a major challenge for a Kansas State offense that cannot afford to become completely dependent on Johnson. The offensive line needs to protect him. The Wildcats need to establish something on the ground. And Johnson may need to use his legs to keep Houston from attacking him all afternoon. K-State also has changes coming at tight end following Will Anciaux's season-ending injury, potentially creating a much larger opportunity for Linkon Cure. Was Cincinnati simply a wake-up call? Kansas State’s Linkon Cure Could Be READY to BREAK OUT

Kansas State football may be getting closer to unleashing Linkon Cure, and Collin Klein quietly revealed why the talented young tight end hasn't made a bigger impact yet. Klein isn't concerned about Cure's lack of targets. In fact, Kansas State has already designed opportunities for him. Klein indicated there have been potential big plays where Cure was open, but protection issues or missed assignments prevented the football from ever getting to him. Now his opportunity could grow significantly. With Will Anciaux potentially unavailable and Garrett Oakley continuing to struggle with costly drops, the Wildcats could have the perfect opening to expand Cure's role coming out of the bye week. We've already seen what Cure can provide as a blocker. He helped spring Rodney Fields on a 19-yard touchdown against Cincinnati, and he's flashed his athleticism when given opportunities in the passing game. But Kansas State didn't win his massive recruiting battle just to have Cure block. The Wildcats have two weeks to prepare for Houston, and this could be the perfect opportunity to start building more of the offense around him. Collin Klein’s OWN WORDS Raise a HUGE Question After Kansas State’s Loss

Kansas State’s loss to Cincinnati raised plenty of questions, but Collin Klein’s own defense of his offensive line created one of the biggest. Klein pushed back on criticism of the Wildcats' offensive line by pointing toward the numbers. Kansas State is averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Avery Johnson hasn't been sacked this season. The Wildcats also rank ninth nationally in runs of 10-plus yards per game. Those are strong arguments for an offensive line that entered the season surrounded by questions. But they also create another question. If Klein has that much confidence in his offensive line, why didn't Kansas State trust that group in a critical 4th-and-short situation? K-State had an opportunity near the goal line where an aggressive decision could have completely changed the 31-26 loss. There's also the Jay Harris question. Harris didn't play a single offensive snap against Cincinnati despite possessing the physical running style that could potentially help Kansas State in short-yardage situations. None of this means Klein suddenly can't coach. He's a first-year head coach making these decisions for the first time, and some growing pains should probably be expected. But Kansas State lost its first Big 12 game by five points. When the margin is that small, every decision matters. Kansas State Was 5 Plays Away From a VERY Different Game

Kansas State allowed 271 rushing yards in its 31-26 loss to Cincinnati, but Collin Klein revealed one number that completely changes the conversation. Five plays. According to Klein, nearly 200 of Cincinnati's 271 rushing yards came on just five plays. So what does that tell us about Kansas State's defense? On one hand, it's encouraging. Eliminate a handful of catastrophic mistakes and the overall defensive performance looks dramatically different. On the other hand, allowing five massive rushing plays in one game is a serious problem. Klein identified several reasons for those breakdowns. Eye discipline wasn't consistently good enough. Players lost gap responsibility. At times, defenders tried to make the play themselves instead of trusting the scheme and the teammates around them. That's how a manageable run suddenly becomes an explosive play. The good news is Kansas State now has a bye week to address it. Jordan Peterson's defense was excellent statistically through the opening weeks of the season before Cincinnati exposed some significant problems. Now we'll find out whether those problems require major changes or simply better execution. Because if Kansas State can eliminate those five plays, the Cincinnati loss suddenly looks very different.
