    The Anniversary Itself

Share with us how you find Microdoses of Joy! I remember this day, August 29, 2023, like it was yesterday. We received a dreaded phone call from my sister-in-love that my beloved brother Israel passed away. Initially when she called, my husband picked up. Shock moved through her body and we couldn’t clearly hear what she had to say let alone understand what happened to Israel. When we finally made sense of what was being communicated, my legs collapsed and I hit the floor. I was unable to move and had an unconsolable cry. Then the flood of calls came in from my siblings…I was paralyzed. I couldn’t form any words to speak. I couldn’t move my body. Each year since, on this day, those memories come back. As much as I try to suppress them, I’m reminded of this painful day and the count of what happened that day is as vivid as a bright sunny day.  Grief keeps its own calendar especially in your body. This year, I’ve noticed it even more. Before this day arrived, I noticed a change in how I moved my body. Everything felt and still feels heavy. I went to Pilates this morning and while I tried my best to move my body and follow along with the instructor, EVERYTHING hurt.  I’ve allowed this day to present itself as it may. Grief anniversaries often intensify for the first several years, then can soften not because the love fades, but because the body and mind build more capacity to hold it over time. Today, I’m holding space for Israel.  I want you to know, you are allowed to let this day be smaller than it used to be. Smaller isn't the same as forgetting. You are allowed to grieve loudly on one day and celebrate quietly on the other, or the reverse, or neither, or both. However you move through it this year is enough. The loved one you lost, knows that you are thinking of them. That's really all this week has ever asked of any of us. If this episode brought up more than you expected, please reach out to someone you trust, or a grief counselor. You don't have to carry this week alone.
