  1. Episode 21: Is Grief a Psychological Experience or a Full-Body Disease? with Mary Francis O'Connor, PhD

Episode 21: Is Grief a Psychological Experience or a Full-Body Disease? with Mary Francis O'Connor, PhD

Grief is not only an emotional experience, it is a biological one. In this episode, Dr. Eleanor Stein speaks with grief researcher Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor. Dr. O’Connor is ideally placed to interpret this research for people with complex chronic disease due to her decades-long personal experience with multiple sclerosis. Drawing on neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, and clinical research, they explore how grief, irrespective of the cause, can drive inflammation, disrupt sleep, impair cognition, and increase vulnerability to chronic illness.  This conversation gently challenges the cultural myth about “moving on” and offers a more compassionate, science-based understanding of grief, particularly for people living with complex chronic disease, long-term loss, or invisible illness. Key Takeaways  Grief is a biological process, not a personal failure. Why the brain struggles to update after loss. How grief and chronic illness can amplify each other. The hidden cost of being told to “move on.” (00:00)  Is Grief a Psychological Experience or a Full-Body Disease?(00:44)  Introduction(02:39)  The impact of grief on the immune system;  Dr O’Connor’s story(04:25)  Grief and inflammation(10:47)  Time doesn’t automatically heal grief(19:30)  Sleep, cognition, and nervous system effects of grief(34:57)  Research on the benefits of acceptance(38:23)  Dealing with ‘self-blame’(41:53)  Healing doesn’t mean forgetting Below are some links related to this episode:Dr. O’Connor’s website https://maryfrancesoconnor.org/The Grieving Body book https://maryfrancesoconnor.org/books/the-grieving-bodyDr. Stein’s updated book Let Your Light Shine Through contains tools for living with chronic illness, loss, and identity change https://www.eleanorsteinmd.ca/manual-2 Dr. O'Connor's Social Mediahttps://www.instagram.com/doctormfoconnor/https://www.facebook.com/maryfrancesohttps://www.goodreads.com/author/show/21476471.Mary_Frances_O_Connor   Welcome to my podcast! 2. Episode 20: Is “Calming the Nervous System” Actually Making You Worse? with guest Irene Lyon

    JAN 22

Episode 20: Is “Calming the Nervous System” Actually Making You Worse? with guest Irene Lyon

Chronic illness is often treated as a purely physical problem—but what if that’s a dangerous oversimplification? In this deep, science-informed conversation, Dr. Eleanor Stein speaks with nervous system expert Irene Lyon about how unresolved trauma, stress, and early life experiences can dysregulate the autonomic nervous system and drive chronic symptoms years later. Together, they unpack why fight-flight-freeze patterns persist, why quick nervous system “hacks” can backfire, and what true healing actually requires. This episode offers education, nuance, and genuine hope for anyone living with complex chronic illness. Key Takeaways • Chronic illness may arise from nervous system dysregulation, not just disease. • Fight, flight, freeze, and shutdown can coexist—creating chronic symptoms. • Many “calming” techniques suppress symptoms without resolving root causes. • True healing requires capacity building, not quick fixes. • Co-regulation (early and adult) is foundational to self-regulation. • Slow, titrated healing is safer and more effective than aggressive approaches. (00:00) Why chronic illness may be a nervous system issue. (03:06) What nervous system dysregulation really means. (04:23) Dr. Peter Levine's "tiger story": how trauma gets trapped in the body. (09:58) Fight, flight, freeze…and shutdown explained. (40:57) Why popular nervous system hacks can backfire. (49:57) How early trauma shows up decades later as illness. Episode 16: How Cleaning the Blood Could Help Chronic Illness—The Science of Plasmapheresis with guest Dr. Eric Gordon

In this episode, I explore a cutting-edge yet often misunderstood treatment, plasmapheresis, with physician and researcher Dr. Eric Gordon. This therapy, sometimes described as “cleaning the blood,” is being studied for its potential to help those with chronic complex diseases, long COVID, autoimmune conditions, and even cognitive decline. We dive deep into• how plasmapheresis removes inflammatory proteins, antibodies, and toxins from the blood.• why toxic load from sources like heavy metals, glyphosate, plastics, and PFAS might be silently driving chronic illness.• the fascinating biology of senescent cells (SASP) and how they keep the body “stuck” in an unhealed state.• why some patients experience dramatic improvements and others don’t.• the real-world limits of expensive protocols versus low-cost, sustainable approaches that promote self-management and resilience. This conversation isn’t just about one treatment—it’s about rethinking what healing truly means. It’s about viewing the body as a dynamic symphony that can be retuned rather than suppressed. Plasmapheresis sits within the emerging field of regenerative medicine, where the goal is not merely to manage symptoms but to restore balance, function, and vitality at the system level. Episode 15: The Little-Known Cancer Cure? with guest Dr. Gábor Somlyai

Is deuterium depletion a cancer cure—or a powerful add-on to conventional treatment? In this episode, I speak with Gábor Somlyai, PhD, a molecular biologist and pioneer in deuterium research. His groundbreaking work suggests that lowering deuterium with deuterium-depleted water (DDW) may transform how we approach cancer treatment and metabolic health. Could adjusting something as simple as the water we drink make a measurable difference in cancer survival, energy production, or chronic illness? Have you heard of this? Let me know your thoughts below! In this episode, we discuss • How deuterium shapes cell growth and mitochondrial function • Why gene expression shifts with changes in deuterium levels • What clinical studies reveal about DDW and cancer outcomes • How diet and environment influence deuterium load • Lifestyle approaches that may naturally lower deuterium (02:02) Guest introduction: Dr. Gábor Somlyai and his research on deuterium and cancer (08:40) Early experiments with deuterium-depleted water and effects on cell growth (10:43) Breast cancer mouse studies and surprising results (16:04) Energy production as a hallmark of cancer (20:19) Impact of deuterium-depleted water on healthy vs. cancer cells (31:26) Clinical cases: cancer patients using deuterium-depleted water (35:37) Large patient database study and key findings (42:04) Brain cancer (glioblastoma) studies and survival outcomes (44:22) Reducing cancer mortality by 80% with combination therapy (57:03) Lifestyle strategies: ketogenic diet and lowering deuterium naturally  Explore Dr. Somlyai’s scientific work and resources: Published study on deuterium depletion: https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9059/13/4/876 Full list of Dr. Somlyai’s research papers: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Gabor-Somlyai/research Scientific background and ongoing projects: https://hyd.hu/ Order Preventa deuterium-depleted water: https://preventa.hu/en/Book–Deuterium Depletion: A New Way of Curing Cancer and Preserving Health: https://www.amazon.ca/Deuterium-Depletion-Curing-Cancer-Preserving/dp/6150143864    Welcome to my podcast! Episode 14: The Real Cause of Medical Gaslighting—It's Not What You Think with guest Dr. Efrat LaMandre

In this episode of the Dr. Eleanor Stein Podcast, we explore the science and lived experience of medical gaslighting with Dr. Efrat LaMandre, also known as Dr. E. What happens when knowledge and protocols cannot explain why patients still feel unwell? Dr. E explains why medical gaslighting happens and how to lessen it.   This conversation blends evidence-based insights with real-world experiences and raises essential questions about the future of care. Instead of rejecting medicine, Dr. E invites us to see it as one tool among many—and to ask ourselves what it means to listen to the body truly. In this conversation, you will discover the following: • What was the turning point that changed Dr. E’s entire approach to health care? • Why do protocols work for certain diseases yet fall short for those with complex chronic conditions? • Could your symptoms of “I don’t feel good-itis” be part of a larger pre-disease state? • What does a leaking toilet have to do with understanding medical limitations? • How can patients validate their own symptoms without waiting for external approval? • What simple phrase can clinicians use that shifts everything for patients who feel dismissed?   (04:48) Realizing unintentional medical gaslighting in practice (07:10) How diet and functional approaches changed Dr. E’s perspective (11:03) Mission to end medical gaslighting, especially for women (12:33) Defining medical gaslighting clearly (20:16) The leaky toilet metaphor: limits of conventional medicine (28:05) How funding and pharma shape medical protocols (35:05) Advice for women who feel dismissed but not “sick enough” (41:00) “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence” (42:11) Why hearing “I believe you” matters for patients (47:44) Final message: don’t give up, find someone who believes you Dr. Efrat LaMandre, NP, PhD, is a best-selling author, speaker, and founder of multiple health care initiatives, including EG Healthcare and The Knew Method.
