The Myth Of Merit In Art Success

Write with us at the Substation! www.diversespoetry.com/aboutsubstationArt pushes a narrative that success is based on talent, ability, and skill. How true are these factors, though, in determining an artist's ability to win awards, gain recognition, and even begin to create a successful art business? What gets demonstrated time and time again is that art, in fact, is not based on meritocracy. But if skill and talent don't play a role in success in art, what does? *Welcome to Arts & Offers, the video podcast dedicated to the intersection between art, poetry, and business. The Most Valuable Poetry Lesson My Degrees Taught

This is taken from a Craft Write poetry workshop around writing poetry and word choice, connotation, and denotation led by facilitator Denise R. Ervin! Every Word Must Conjure is a 2-hour generative writing workshop that dives into the differences between denotation and connotation in poetry. Specifically, the importance of word choice in conveying not only meaning, but ideas and images in an intentional way. Participants will have the chance to explore contemporary writing by poets of color, discussing and dissecting the syntax of each, and have time to generate new work in response to a prompt along with the opportunity to share.Denise R. Ervin is a creative writer hewn from the streets, classrooms, and boardrooms of Detroit. She has spent more than two decades as a teaching artist, performing poetry around the country, and leading workshops for the likes of Literary Cleveland and the University of Michigan. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Vagabond City Lit, Harbinger Asylum, Third Wednesday Magazine, and others. She is a TWH (The Watering Hole) Graduate Fellow, an Obsidian Foundation Fellow, and a semifinalist for America’s Next Great Author. Why I'm A Poet, But My 1ST Book Wasn't Poetry

I'm a poet, but my first book actually wasn't poetry. In fact, my first self-released work of poetry is just coming out now, while my essay collection will be celebrating its 1st anniversary soon. What led to the decision to put the essays out first is a discussion that I think is a discussion of value for any artist who puts work into the world and is concerned about impact.Taken from this full episode of Arts & Offers: https://youtube.com/live/LmLO9e3WbK4Get a free mp3/podcast/audio version of videos: https://open.spotify.com/show/4vAdMbaunOPziRoovm0K5PIf you are interested in starting a creative business, our podcast, Arts & Offers, is for you!
