    Finding a job in America requires more than skills and qualifications. It requires a strategic, organized, and persistent job search campaign. Many newly arrived immigrants make the mistake of waiting for jobs to come to them — posting a resume online and hoping for responses. This passive approach rarely works in today's competitive labor market. Successful job seekers take an active, multifaceted approach. The job search process in America typically begins with self-assessment. Before applying for positions, take honest stock of your skills, experience, educational background, and language level. Identify industries where your skills are transferable and positions that represent realistic opportunities at your current English level. Then, as your language proficiency grows, expand your target list to include more advanced positions. American employers recruit through several channels. Job websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and ZipRecruiter are important starting points, but they represent only a fraction of available opportunities. Many jobs — especially at small and mid-size employers — are filled through word of mouth and personal connections before they ever appear online. This is why building a professional network (which we will explore in Chapter 21) is so critical. The VESL classroom itself is a powerful job search resource. Your instructor often has connections with local employers and may know of opportunities before they are publicly posted.     We live in a digital economy. No matter what industry you want to work in — healthcare, construction, hospitality, education, logistics, food service, or retail — computer and technology skills are increasingly required at every level of employment. The worker who cannot send a professional email, navigate a workplace scheduling system, or use basic productivity software is disadvantaged in today's job market in the same way that the worker of fifty years ago was disadvantaged if they could not read. The encouraging news for VESL students is that many adult schools and community colleges in California and across the United States offer free computer literacy courses alongside VESL classes. These programs recognize that language learning and digital literacy go hand in hand, and they provide the training needed to succeed in both areas simultaneously. If your school offers computer classes, enroll immediately. If not, most public libraries offer free computer training programs that you can access on your own schedule. The most essential computer skills for today's workplace include the ability to send and receive professional emails, use word processing programs to create documents, navigate the internet safely and effectively, use video conferencing tools for remote meetings, and manage digital files and folders. More advanced but increasingly common skills include using spreadsheet programs, working with workplace management software, and completing online training programs. Beyond software skills, digital literacy includes awareness of cybersecurity. Many American businesses have been damaged by data breaches, and employees who accidentally expose company information through weak passwords, phishing scams, or unsafe downloads create serious liability. Knowing how to recognize suspicious emails, create strong passwords, and follow digital safety protocols makes you a more valuable and trustworthy employee.
