Why The Beatles Matter to Brad Spirrison

In this episode of Why The Beatles Matter, I reconnect with my friend, brother, and longtime bandmate Brad Spirrison for a conversation that feels less like an interview and more like a musical family reunion. We riff our way through the Beatles, McCartney, the Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, Dylan, Bill Evans, and more while exploring the enduring power of music to connect generations, communities, and people. With the 60th anniversary of Revolver as one of our jumping off points, Brad reflects on why songs like “Eleanor Rigby” remain strikingly relevant in a world wrestling with loneliness and disconnection. We explore the Beatles’ willingness to experiment, the creative necessity of trial and error, the studio as an instrument, and why their music continues to transcend eras and boundaries. Brad also shares the personal significance of “Come Together,” a song that became part of his family story and a reminder that even as families and communities evolve, we can always find ways to reconnect. Along the way, we talk about courage, vulnerability, artistic freedom, friendship, musical inheritance, and the interconnectedness of influence. Brad introduces the idea of seeking greater “fidelity” in our communication and relationships through his work with Project Middle Ground, a fitting extension of a conversation centered on finding common ground. Ultimately, this episode gets to the heart of why the Beatles still matter. Their story and their music remain profoundly human. They remind us to experiment, connect, listen, create, question, and perhaps most importantly, come together.

Why The Beatles Matter to Amelia Davis of Jim Marshall Photography, LLC

On this episode of Why The Beatles Matter, Sean welcomes Amelia Davis, the longtime steward of the Jim Marshall Archive and curator of the remarkable new book, The Beatles by Jim Marshall: Live at Candlestick Park 1966. Jim Marshall was the only photographer granted backstage access to The Beatles during their final public concert at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966. His photographs capture far more than a historic performance. They reveal the humanity of four young men standing at the threshold of a major transition. More than 150 photographs and proof sheets, many never before published, offer an intimate look at the band both onstage and behind the scenes. In this conversation, Sean and Amelia explore Marshall's unique ability to earn the trust of artists and document moments that others missed. They discuss the process of curating the collection, the stories behind the photographs, and what these images reveal about The Beatles during the final chapter of their touring years. The discussion also highlights the joy, camaraderie, and creative spirit still visible in the band despite the pressures surrounding them. From backstage doodles on a tablecloth to candid locker room moments, this episode offers a rare glimpse into one of the most significant days in Beatles history and the photographer who preserved it for generations to come.
