Why Religion Can’t Redeem You (Ruth 4)

Who is the mysterious redeemer who came before Boaz—and what does he reveal about our relationship with God? In Ruth chapter 4, Boaz goes to the city gate prepared to redeem Ruth and take her as his bride. But first, he must confront a nearer kinsman-redeemer who has the legal right to redeem her. As the story unfolds, this unnamed man becomes a powerful picture of the Law: able to reveal what is required, but unable to provide redemption. In this message, Pastor Christian Dobson explains how Boaz points us to Jesus Christ, Ruth pictures the undeserving outsider rescued by grace, and the nearer redeemer demonstrates why religious effort and legalism can never save us. The Law can expose sin, but only Jesus can redeem the sinner. Discover how the entire Bible points to Jesus, why Christians must resist the pull of legalism, and why Calvary Kona is committed to being a church marked by grace rather than religious burdens. Scripture passages: Ruth 4:1–6, Galatians 3:23–26, Galatians 5:3–4, Luke 24:25–27, Romans 7, Hebrews 10 Topics covered: Ruth chapter 4, Boaz and Ruth, kinsman-redeemer, Jesus in the Old Testament, biblical typology, grace versus law, Christian legalism, salvation by faith, Calvary Chapel teaching, verse-by-verse Bible study, the Law of Moses, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. What Are You Really Worth? The Price God Was Willing to Pay | Ruth 3

Who determines your value—the world, your past, your failures, or even the way you see yourself? In Ruth chapter 3, Ruth approaches Boaz at the threshing floor with nothing to offer except herself. As a Moabite widow, she had every reason to expect rejection. Instead, Boaz receives her with extraordinary kindness, calls her worthy, and promises to pursue her redemption. In this message from Calvary Kona, Pastor Christian Dobson explores the powerful biblical symbolism of Ruth and Boaz, the threshing floor, and the kinsman-redeemer. Through this Old Testament picture of Jesus Christ, we discover that our worth is not determined by our performance, our opinions, or what others have said about us. The buyer determines the value—and God revealed your value through the price He was willing to pay: the blood of Jesus Christ. This sermon will encourage anyone struggling with rejection, shame, insecurity, identity, or the feeling that they have nothing valuable to offer God. In this episode: The meaning of the threshing floor in the BibleRuth’s risky proposal to BoazHow Boaz points us to Jesus ChristWhat the Bible says about your identity and worthWhy salvation is based on grace, not worksThe meaning of the kinsman-redeemerHow Jesus brings redemption to broken livesWhy God’s opinion of you matters more than your ownScripture passages: Ruth 3:6–18, John 3:16, Matthew 3:12, Psalm 1:4–5, Luke 12:8, Luke 15:10, Hebrews 8:5, and 1 Corinthians 10:11. God Loved You Before You Cleaned Up | Ruth 3

Do you need to clean up your life before coming to God? Many people believe they must overcome their sin, break their addictions, and become a better person before Jesus will accept them—but the story of Ruth reveals the exact opposite. Before Ruth washed, anointed herself, or changed her clothes, she had already caught the attention of Boaz, her kinsman-redeemer. In the same way, God did not wait for us to become worthy before showing us His love. Jesus came for us while we were still sinners. In this verse-by-verse Bible teaching from Ruth 2:21–3:5, Pastor Christian Dobson explores the difference between salvation and sanctification, and explains why grace always comes before transformation. We also see how Naomi moved from bitterness and depression toward renewed joy by participating in God’s harvest and helping bring Ruth to Boaz. This message addresses: How to overcome bitterness, grief, and spiritual exhaustionWhy serving others can restore joy after sufferingWhat Boaz and Ruth reveal about Jesus and the ChurchThe biblical meaning of washing, anointing, and putting on new clothesWhy Christians do not change to earn God’s loveHow the Word of God and the Holy Spirit transform believersWhat it means to find true rest at the feet of JesusThe role of pastors, mentors, and disciple-makers in leading people to ChristYou do not clean yourself up so that Jesus will love you. You come to Him as you are, receive His grace, and then allow Him to transform your life. Key Scriptures: Ruth 2:21–3:5, Matthew 9:37–38, Matthew 11:28, Psalm 126:5, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9–13, Romans 13:14, Ephesians 5:26, Psalm 119:9, Hebrews 10:22, Luke 4:18–19, and 2 Corinthians 1:21–22.
