Season 4, Episode 5: Fallen Heroes: William Diaz Pagan

In this episode of 8158: Stories of Sacrifice, we honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Correctional Officer William Diaz-Pagan of the Puerto Rico Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. On November 12, 1994, Officer Diaz-Pagan was driving an unmarked department vehicle when he was ambushed and fatally shot. Those responsible fled the scene, leaving behind a family, a department, and a community mourning the loss of one of their own. His name is forever recorded among America's fallen law-enforcement professionals, but his story also represents a group of first responders whose service is too often overlooked: correctional officers. Behind prison walls, corrections professionals walk into an environment most of us will never experience. They maintain order, protect lives, respond to emergencies, and carry the responsibility of returning home safely after every shift—knowing there are no guarantees. William Diaz-Pagan's watch ended more than three decades ago, but time does not erase sacrifice. Today, we speak his name. We remember the officer behind the badge. And we make sure Correctional Officer William Diaz-Pagan is never forgotten. 💙 End of Watch: November 12, 1994 Puerto Rico Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation 🎙️ 8158: Stories of Sacrifice Stories of service. OFF DUTY: Robb Watts

In this episode of 8158 Off Duty, Rico welcomes back Robb Watts for a raw, wide-ranging conversation about what happens when the uniform comes off—but the effects of the job don’t. Robb opens up about the physical toll his years as a first responder have taken on his body, including multiple surgeries, chronic health struggles, and his ongoing battle to obtain disability benefits. His story highlights a side of public service that often gets overlooked: the injuries, financial strain, loss of identity, and difficulty finding purpose after leaving a career built around helping others. The conversation goes deeper into the mental and emotional impact of first responder life. Robb explains how hypervigilance doesn’t simply disappear when a shift—or even a career—ends. The things responders see can follow them home, affecting sleep, relationships, parenting, careers, and their ability to adjust to everyday life. He also makes a passionate case for first responders having better access to long-term resources and benefits, particularly when PTSD and other struggles may surface years after leaving the profession. Rico and Robb also talk candidly about addiction, sobriety, situational awareness, complacency, faith, family, personal responsibility, current events, and the changing world around them. Nothing is particularly off limits in this Off Duty conversation—and that’s exactly the point. But beneath all the different directions this conversation takes is one powerful message: you still matter after the job. Robb shares how something as simple as kindness has become part of his own self-care, and why helping someone else can sometimes help heal pieces of ourselves. He also reminds listeners why conversations like these matter: one person's story might be exactly what someone else needs to hear to ask for help, choose not to drink today, reconnect with their family, or simply keep going. 🎙️ 8158 Off Duty is where the conversation goes beyond the badge, beyond the uniform, and beyond the prepared questions. Some conversations aren't polished. They're real. And sometimes, real is exactly what somebody needs. 🌐 8158 Podcast: https://www.8158podcast.com 💙 Support the Mission: https://www.8158podcast.com/donatepodcast-1 👕 8158 Merch: https://www.8158podcast.com/shop #8158Podcast #8158OffDuty #FirstResponders #MentalHealthMatters #StoriesOfSacrifice #BeyondTheBadge #fyp

Season 4, Episode 4: Breaking the Stigma with Derek & Amanda

What happens when two first responders—separated by more than 1,500 miles—find each other through a shared mission of helping others? In this powerful episode of 8158: Stories of Sacrifice, Rico sits down with Derek, a police officer and former 911 dispatcher from Oklahoma, and Amanda, an EMS Field Supervisor from Northern California. Their relationship began as a friendship on TikTok but quickly grew into something much deeper—a partnership built on understanding the invisible wounds carried by those who answer the call. Together, they share deeply personal stories of officer-involved shootings, life-changing trauma, panic attacks, and the mental health battles that too many first responders face in silence. Derek opens up about surviving years of accumulated trauma, his recovery through peer support, therapy, and the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) procedure, while Amanda shares the emotional toll of leading EMS crews through critical incidents—and learning that even supervisors need support. The conversation also introduces their growing mission, Break the Stigma, Hold the Line, an initiative dedicated to connecting first responders with peer support, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), and life-saving mental health resources before trauma becomes tragedy. This episode is a powerful reminder that courage isn't just running toward danger—sometimes it's having the strength to ask for help. 🎙️ In this episode: • How a TikTok friendship became a life-changing partnership • The hidden emotional cost of policing, dispatch, and EMS • Why PTSD should be viewed as an injury—not a weakness • Derek's recovery through peer support, therapy, and SGB treatment • Amanda's experience supporting traumatized EMS crews • Breaking the stigma surrounding first responder mental health • The vision behind Break the Stigma, Hold the Line 💙 Because even those who dedicate their lives to saving others deserve someone willing to help save them. 💙 Support the mission: Donate to the William H. Season 4, Episode 3: Organization Spotlight-The Thin Line Peer Support Team

Behind every badge, every radio call, every fire engine, every ambulance, every correctional facility, and every military uniform is a human being carrying experiences most of us will never fully understand. But who supports those who dedicate their lives to serving others? In this episode of the 8158 Podcast's Organization Spotlight Series, Rico Lopez shines a light on the Thin Line Peer Support Team, a nonprofit organization committed to providing confidential peer support for law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS professionals, dispatchers, corrections officers, emergency room personnel, active-duty military members, and veterans. Together, we explore why peer support is so vital, the stigma surrounding mental health in public safety, and how one conversation can change—or even save—a life. We also discuss the unseen sacrifices made by the families of first responders and why supporting those who serve means caring for them long after the sirens stop. Whether you're a first responder, veteran, family member, or simply someone who wants to better understand the people behind the uniform, this episode is a reminder that strength isn't found in carrying every burden alone. Because no one should have to fight alone. Honoring Four Heroes. One Community Forever Changed.Between 2014 and 2019, the Sacramento region experienced an unimaginable series of losses. In just five years, four law enforcement officers from the same community made the ultimate sacrifice while answering routine calls that turned into life-changing tragedies. Oliver – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office 💙 Deputy Robert "Bobby" French – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office 💙 Deputy Mark V. Stasyuk – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office 💙 Officer Tara Christina O'Sullivan – Sacramento Police Department From a motel parking lot... to a hotel gun battle... to an auto parts store... to a domestic violence standby... Season 4, Episode 1: Behind the Badge-Sergeant Tom Lee

When people see the badge, they often see strength, courage, and service. What they don't always see are the scars left behind. In the Season 4 premiere of 8158 Podcast: Stories of Sacrifice, Rico sits down with Texas Sheriff's Deputy and author Tom Lee for an unforgettable conversation about resilience, redemption, and the realities of serving on the front lines. Tom shares his journey from an unexpected start in law enforcement, to losing his first police job, rebuilding his career, and ultimately finding his calling as a Mental Health Deputy—helping people in crisis find treatment instead of simply entering the criminal justice system. The conversation takes an emotional turn as Tom recounts surviving a crossbow attack while responding to a mental health crisis, the life-or-death decisions he was forced to make, and how that traumatic experience shaped both his career and his faith. He also opens up about seeking help himself, why mental health support is critical for first responders, and how sharing our stories can help others heal. Tom also discusses his new book, Scars the Badge: Faith, Trauma, and Redemption Behind the Thin Blue Line, and why he hopes it encourages first responders—and anyone carrying invisible wounds—to know they are never alone.
