    The Sleep Episode

You're training hard, eating reasonably well, and showing up consistently. So why does progress feel slower than it should? Why does recovery take longer than it used to? Why do you feel like you're running at 80 percent no matter what you do? The answer might be happening while you're unconscious. In 1942, the average person slept 7.9 hours a night. Today it's closer to 6.5. That missing 90 minutes isn't just making you tired. It's quietly working against every training session you put in, every technique you're trying to learn, and every adaptation your body is trying to make. In this episode, we dig into the science of sleep and what it actually means for anyone who trains martial arts, attends fitness classes, or is raising kids who do. We cover why sleep is where your training gets processed, not just where you rest. We talk about the hormonal repair window that most people are cutting short without realizing it, why your evening habits are sending your biology the wrong signals, and what the research actually says about caffeine, alcohol, light, temperature, and the mind that won't stop spinning at midnight. No vague wellness advice. No supplements to buy. Just the mechanisms, the evidence, and a handful of specific things you can change tonight. This episode is for anyone who has quietly accepted being tired as just part of life. It doesn't have to be. What we cover: Why sleep is the recovery window your training depends onThe seven-hour finding and what chronic short sleep actually costs youHow martial arts and fitness training creates a sleep advantage and how to use itCircadian rhythms and why consistency matters more than durationTemperature, light, caffeine, and alcohol: the four evening habits most affecting your sleepWhat to do when your mind won't quiet down at bedtimeThe clinical option for chronic insomnia that outperforms medication Okami Kai Martial Arts & Fitness serves families across Uxbridge, Port Perry, Stouffville, and the broader Durham Region. The Two Handles: Gratitude, Stoicism, and How We Carry Life

Every situation has two handles. One makes the burden heavier. The other makes it manageable. In this episode of The Okami Kai Chronicles, we explore an idea from the Stoic teacher Epictetus known as “the two handles.” He had an insight that every experience can be approached in different ways. One way leads to resentment and frustration. The other allows us to carry the same weight with more clarity and resilience. Modern research on gratitude is beginning to explain why this ancient idea still matters. Studies suggest that practicing gratitude can improve mental health, sleep, relationships, and even aspects of physical health by helping regulate the nervous system and reduce the effects of chronic stress. In this episode we discuss: • Why gratitude has a “branding problem”  • What science suggests about gratitude and the nervous system  • The Stoic idea of the two handles  • How parents can help children through difficult moments in training  • How adults can reset themselves during frustration  • Simple daily practices that build resilience Because sometimes the most important change is not what we are carrying. It is how we carry it. Okami Kai Martial Arts & Fitness serves families across Uxbridge, Port Perry, Stouffville, and the broader Durham Region. The Psychology Behind What We Do – with Melody Johnson (Founder of SKILLZ Worldwide)

Why do some kids thrive while others struggle to focus, listen, or stay motivated? In this episode, Scott sits down with Melody Johnson, Founder and CEO of SKILLZ Worldwide, to uncover the psychology behind how children learn and why traditional “one-size-fits-all” teaching doesn’t always work. Melody has spent decades studying how martial arts can help children develop not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Together, she and Scott explore how the SKILLZ system combines martial arts, neuroscience, and child development to create better learners on and off the mats. You’ll also hear how Okami Kai Martial Arts & Fitness has found success in the “grey area,” blending traditional martial arts discipline with SKILLZ-inspired methods to help students of all ages grow. In the second half, Melody tackles real-world parenting scenarios and shares practical advice you can use at home right away. Whether you’re a parent, coach, teacher, or instructor, this episode will change how you see your child’s learning, motivation, and mindset. 🎧 Listen now to learn how martial arts can teach any child, anything.
