    Ep 31 l Friendship After Medical Trauma: Growth, Evolvement, Loneliness

    Send Gabriella a Text Message. Tightening your circle, misalignment, outgrowing people, quality over quantity, discernment, friendships that no longer fit….the list goes on. Oof! This was a tough one - tough to live and tough to write. Peer reviewed by fellow medical trauma survivors, this is our take on friendship after trauma. The reality of how friendships change after trauma, how to show up for a friend who’s gone through trauma, &  how necessary friendship is to healing. After medical trauma, everything changes…so why wouldn’t your friendships? That makes it sound really simple, but figuring friendship after trauma is like trying to solve a Rubix cube, if the Rubix cube had fourteen times as many small cubes as the original Rubix cube and also you were taming a lion while trying to solve said mega Rubix cube.  Not everyone survives your survival. Unfortunately, trauma shows you with “painful clarity” where you stand with every friendship in your life. Over the course of your healing, friends - both old and new - will come in and out.  It will start off very chaotic, intense, & drastic - and stay that way for a damn bit - but overtime, it smooths out. You attract people you are a vibrational match for, so while your vibes are figuring themselves out, so are your friendships. Growth is lonely before it’s aligned. While some connections will expire, you’ll have the most pure chemistry with the new ones you make and the old, healthy ones you keep: safety. My recovery & healing has brought me to the most beautiful friendships that I never would have found sans coma.     Ep 30 l Carlos Rodriguez, Golf Teacher for Veterans: Students w/ Disabilities & Trauma

Healing to live in harmony & balance, the lost art of listening, true inclusivity for all abilities When Puerto Rican immigrant, Carlos Rodriguez, returned from Vietnam, he bravely chose to devote himself to a life of peace. Already an accomplished athlete, Carlos took up a study of Aikido that eventually led him to learning and then teaching golf.  A PGA pro, Carlos prioritizes his Four Corners foundation where he teaches golf (for free) to ALL veterans, including veterans with disabilities. Carlos insists he is a teacher, not a master, not a pro. He has no skin in the game, and his goal is only to listen & give back. Veterans are an especially misunderstood group. With an intense trauma that usually can’t clearly be articulated, drugs are not the answer. Validation, listening, & golf is. Golf is a game that requires your body to be in perfect balance. Players only excel when their body & mind move in harmony. Success comes from peace. As Carlos explains, caring within our society has become “fractured.” People have forgotten how to give to each other in a way that’s purely generous and the beauty that is simply sharing knowledge. We are too focussed on what separates us all and seem to have forgotten that we all came from the same place and are all going out the same door. You can never go back to quite the same life or same way of navigating the world after your mentality has been altered by trauma, no matter how slight or major.  In Part 1 of this series, rebuilding identity, I give tips & tricks to finding this new, better version of you. Because that's the thing - trauma doesn’t have to provide a change for the worse. In fact, trauma can help you expedite & expand your personal evolution, but only if you choose to elevate your vibrations and lean into the good energy, instead of focusing on the bad.  But how do you do that?     Ep 28 l Caregivers for TBI Survivors: Managing Medical Needs, Behavioral/Cognitive Changes, Stress, Burnout, & Frustration

    Send Gabriella a Text Message. A deeply honest caregiver-focused episode, My Mom and I unpack the reality oflife after a traumatic brain injury—for both the patient and the people who love them. Together, we reflect on the long road from returning home to outpatient rehab and more surgeries, my move back to LA to try to be an adult and live solo, and the many more medical, mental, and subsequent emotional issues. Recovery isn’t linear: it’s one step forward, two steps back, filled with setbacks, fear, and constant adaptation. My mom shares what it was like to advocate for her daughter in medical settings, navigate PTSD-level anxiety, and learn the difference between supporting and enabling, while I open up about the emotional whiplash, identity loss, and loneliness that came with rebuilding my life.  Answering questions from my Mom’s former LoveYourBrain caregiver support group - that she still independently meets with three years later - we break down the complexity of caregiver-patient communication—why emotional regulation is harder after brain trauma, why “fixing” isn’t always helpful, and how boundaries can exist alongside unconditional love. While a traumatic brain injury has at moments made both my Mom and I more upset and angry than we ever could have expected, it has brought us closer than most mom & daughter duo’s. Ultimately, this episode is a love letter to caregivers: a reminder to seek community, take care of yourself, and give grace to the person healing in front of you, even when progress looks messy. It’s raw, funny, heartbreaking, and validating—proof that two things can be true at once: you can be lucky to be alive, and still be grieving everything that changed. A family unites during a daughter’s NDE (near death experience), caregiver ptsd & struggle, strength & dependance on each other, love from the community.  How does a parent cope when they think their child is going to die? How does a family handle a loved one’s brutal accident & health scare? I somehow convinced my mother, Laura Tranchina, to come to the studio and share exactly that. My life changed the day of my accident, but so did my family’s, especially my parents. Caregivers are often an afterthought in the whole traumatic experience shindig, and that’s - for lack of a better term - utter b******t & simply not fair.  My mom put her life on pause for me. My dad carried my family through. No one supports me more than my brother. I don’t remember the worst parts of my accident. He will say emergency medicine is a team sport - which it is - but he was the captain & delegator of the ER team who saved me. To me, this man is the ultimate celebrity guest. Not limited to just practicing medicine, in this interview he speaks as a doctor, professor, & researcher, shedding light on the future of medicine & diagnosis, how to be your own best self-advocate as a patient, and the daily life of an ER doctor.  Mainly, this man is a human. His level of empathy for both patients and doctors gives so much hope about the future of medicine & our world.  Medicine can be intimidating…for everyone. In this episode, Dr. Berdahl gives priceless advice about how to best navigate a complex medical situation.
