Putting the Extra in the Ordinary For a More Enjoyable Life

Finding the Joy in Routine We all need some structure in our lives, but sometimes our routines can start to feel repetitive, predictable, or even a little boring. In this episode of Standing in the Light, we explore how to create routines that make life easier while still leaving room for curiosity, spontaneity, and enjoyment. Instead of constantly looking for something new to make us feel excited about life, we can learn how to bring more presence and creativity to the things we already do every day. In this episode, we explore: Why routines can make life feel calmer and easierHow to create structure without becoming rigidUsing routines as a framework rather than a strict scheduleWays to make familiar activities feel new againAdding small things to your week that you genuinely look forward toWhy we shouldn’t save all the good things for special occasionsCreating space for spontaneity and “wildcard” momentsMaking ordinary tasks more enjoyableAvoiding the pressure to create the “perfect” routineBuilding routines around the things you actually want more of in your lifeHow small changes can bring new energy to familiar experiencesFinding more joy in the ordinary moments that make up most of our livesA little reminder for this week: Look at one part of your normal routine and change one small thing. Take a different route.Try a new recipe.Listen to something different.Put on music while you clean.Have your coffee somewhere new.Go somewhere you’ve never been.Or simply slow down and pay attention to something you normally rush through. You don’t have to change your whole life to experience it differently. Sometimes you just need to look at the familiar with fresh eyes. There is so much life happening in the middle of the routine. Sometimes we just have to slow down enough to notice it.

Stop Forcing It: The Taoist Art of Wu Wei and Finding Your Flow

In this episode of Standing in the Light, we explore the ancient Taoist philosophy of Wu Wei—often translated as “non-action” or “effortless action.” But Wu Wei isn’t about doing nothing or giving up. It’s about learning the difference between effort and force—between taking meaningful action and exhausting ourselves trying to control outcomes that were never entirely ours to control. We explore the mysterious figure of Laozi, the Tao Te Ching, and the Taoist idea of living in harmony with the natural flow of life. Using the metaphor of water, we look at what it means to be flexible without being weak, persistent without forcing, and present enough to recognize when life is asking us to change direction. In This Episode Who Laozi was and why his identity remains somewhat mysteriousWhat the Tao meansThe meaning of Wu WeiThe difference between effort and forcingWhy water is one of Taoism’s most powerful metaphorsHow to navigate difficult seasons without adding unnecessary sufferingRecognizing what is—and isn’t—within your controlLetting go of timelines and expectationsUsing the pause to respond instead of reactHow to find your next step when you don’t know the whole pathA simple seven-day Wu Wei practiceA short guided meditation for releasing the need to controlA Question to Take With You When something isn’t going according to plan, instead of asking: “How do I make this work?” Try asking: “What is mine to do?” Then listen. Maybe the answer is action. Maybe it’s a conversation. Maybe it’s a boundary. Maybe it’s rest. Maybe it’s acceptance. Maybe you simply aren’t supposed to know the answer yet. This Week’s Practice For the next seven days, begin your morning by asking: “What is life asking of me today?” And whenever something unexpected happens, pause before reacting. Ask: “Am I responding to what is happening—or trying to force the outcome?” Then take the next honest step. You don’t need the whole map. You just need the next step. Taoist Wisdom The Tao Te Ching teaches: “The highest goodness is like water.” Water doesn’t need to fight every obstacle in its path. It adapts. It finds another way. And over time, even something soft can reshape something hard. Perhaps we can learn to do the same. The Takeaway You don’t have to control the river. You can learn how to move with it. Sometimes moving forward isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about becoming quiet enough to recognize where the current is already taking you. And when you stop fighting what is, you become free to work with what is actually here. Less force.More awareness.More trust.More flow. And maybe that’s what it means to finally get out of your own way.

The Power of a Reverse Bucket List

How often do you celebrate everything you’ve already accomplished? Most of us spend our lives focused on what’s next—the next goal, the next promotion, the next vacation, the next milestone. While dreaming about the future is important, constantly chasing “more” can make us overlook the incredible life we’ve already built. In this episode of Standing in the Light, we’re exploring the transformative practice of creating a Reverse Bucket List—a list of the dreams you’ve already fulfilled, the challenges you’ve overcome, the experiences you’ve collected, and the person you’ve become along the way. Together, we’ll discuss why our brains naturally overlook our successes, how gratitude changes our perspective, and why recognizing your own journey can bring a deeper sense of joy, purpose, and contentment. Whether you’ve traveled the world or simply made it through seasons you once thought would break you, your story deserves to be celebrated. This episode is an invitation to pause, reflect, and recognize that the life you’ve already lived is filled with moments that your younger self only dreamed about. In This Episode What a Reverse Bucket List is and why it mattersThe psychology behind why we forget our accomplishmentsHow gratitude reshapes the way we experience lifeWhy personal growth deserves as much recognition as external achievementsA simple exercise to help you rediscover the richness of your own storyThis Week’s Challenge Create your own Reverse Bucket List. Write down at least 50 accomplishments, experiences, adventures, moments of courage, lessons learned, and dreams you’ve already fulfilled. Then choose one each day this week and spend a minute remembering it—not just what happened, but how it changed you. You may discover that your life has been far more extraordinary than you’ve been giving yourself credit for. Reflection Questions What accomplishment have you stopped celebrating? What once seemed impossible that is now part of your everyday life? What challenge made you stronger?Who have you become because of the life you’ve lived? If your younger self met you today, what would surprise them most?Remember, gratitude isn’t about pretending life has been perfect. It’s about recognizing that even through the challenges, you’ve grown, you’ve persevered, and you’ve created a life worth honoring. Thank you for listening to Standing in the Light. The Conscious Creator: Understanding God Through Science and Spirituality

What is consciousness? It’s one of humanity’s greatest unanswered questions—and one that sits at the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, and faith. In this episode of Standing in the Light, we explore the fascinating mystery of consciousness and ask whether science and spirituality are really opposing forces—or whether they are two complementary ways of discovering truth. Together we’ll examine what modern neuroscience has uncovered about the brain, awareness, neuroplasticity, attention, and perception, while also reflecting on what Scripture teaches about being created in the image of God, renewing the mind, and awakening to God’s presence. Rather than choosing between scientific discovery and spiritual wisdom, we’ll explore how both can deepen our understanding of ourselves, our relationships, and the Creator. • What consciousness is—and why scientists still can’t fully explain it • The “Hard Problem of Consciousness” and why subjective experience remains one of science’s greatest mysteries • How your brain filters reality through attention and expectation • What neuroplasticity teaches us about renewing our minds • The connection between gratitude, prayer, meditation, and the human brain • How our thoughts, emotions, and presence influence the people around us • Why science and faith ask different—but complementary—questions • What Transcendentalism and New Thought contribute to conversations about consciousness • How Scripture and neuroscience together encourage intentional living • Practical ways to cultivate greater awareness of God in everyday life Whether you’re a person of faith, someone fascinated by science, or simply searching for meaning, this episode invites you to step into the wonder of being fully awake to life. Because perhaps consciousness isn’t simply about being alive… Perhaps it’s about becoming aware of the One who gave us life.
