Closing the 18-Inch Gap: When Your Heart and Mind Don’t Agree — with Edwin Soler

What if the distance between the life you’re living and the life you truly want is closer than you think—maybe only 18 inches away? ❤️🧠 In this powerful episode of Blissful Connections, I sat down with Edwin Soler, Dream Realization Partner, author of Closing the 18-Inch Gap, and host of the Closing the 18-Inch Gap Podcast. And wow—this conversation went places! Edwin shared the deeply personal story of unexpectedly leaving his 27-year career as a probation officer. What initially left him blindsided and devastated eventually opened the door to healing, freedom, faith, and an entirely new mission. We explored Edwin’s concept of the “18-inch gap”—the space between the dreams and desires in our hearts and the fears, limiting beliefs, doubts, and expectations that can take over our minds. Edwin explained how the concept originated from a pastor’s teaching about the approximate distance between the heart and mind. Sometimes what we truly desire is much closer than it feels—but closing that gap requires emotional, mental, and spiritual growth. We talked about what happens when life forces us into a transition we never planned for, why losing something can sometimes redirect us toward something greater, and why pursuing a dream doesn’t require knowing every step before beginning. Edwin and I explored: Recognizing when your heart and mind aren’t aligned Where limiting beliefs come from and why we hold onto them Why a persistent dream or passion may be trying to tell us something Expanding our comfort zones gradually rather than expecting ourselves to make enormous leaps Avoiding perfectionism and the comparison trap Discovering your “why” before becoming consumed with the “how” Moving from dreaming to doing Writing down goals and taking small, courageous first steps Career transitions and unexpected new beginnings Releasing the need for everyone else’s approval Faith, trusting God’s timing, and moving forward when we can only see the next few steps Why healing and personal growth are ongoing journeys Why meaningful success requires patience, persistence, community, and genuine human connection Using AI as a tool rather than a crutch , while remembering that technology can’t replace authentic human relationships We also talked candidly about the myth of instant success. Dreams take work. Building a podcast, coaching practice, speaking career, book, business—or almost anything meaningful—doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes progress means taking one small action today and allowing the next step to reveal itself tomorrow. And this episode wasn’t just Edwin and me talking! Our live audience became part of the experience. Sylvia shared her own story of moving forward after the ending of a long-term relationship and creating a new chapter in her life. My mom, Doy, also joined the conversation and shared her dream of developing a ministry program for vacationers in Mexico, creating opportunities for English-speaking visitors to experience faith and community while traveling. I shared parts of my own journey as well, including career transitions, accessibility barriers, advocating for myself, and learning that sometimes an opportunity ending doesn’t mean our story is ending. That made this episode feel like exactly what Blissful Connections is supposed to be—a conversation where different lives and experiences can come together, learn from one another, and remind us that none of us has to navigate change completely alone. One message kept coming through: It’s never too late. You don’t have to build the entire dream tomorrow. Maybe your first step is writing down the goal. Maybe it’s buying the domain name. Maybe it’s making the phone call. Maybe it’s joining a supportive community. Maybe it’s asking for help. Or maybe it’s finally giving yourself permission to say: “This is something I really want.” As Edwin reminded us, closing the gap isn’t necessarily something we accomplish once and never think about again. Growth continues. New fears appear. New dreams emerge. Our comfort zones expand. Sometimes success begins with simply taking the next step. Manic Mondays: Turning the Most Dreaded Day of the Week into a Fresh Start

It’s just another manic Monday! 😂☀️ Why do Mondays get such a bad reputation? Is Monday itself really the problem—or is it what Monday represents? In this solo episode of Blissful Connections, I’m taking a lighter look at the Monday blues and exploring why the beginning of the week can bring stress, dread, exhaustion, and that familiar feeling of wishing the weekend could last just a little longer. From alarm clocks and traffic to overflowing inboxes, responsibilities, Sunday-night anticipation, work environments, and relationships, there are plenty of reasons Mondays can feel overwhelming. But sometimes our feelings about Monday can also tell us something important about what's happening in our lives. And here's the good news: Monday doesn't have to be perfect to become a fresh start. ☀️ In This Episode I talk about: Why Mondays have developed such a terrible reputation The Sunday-night blues and anticipating the week ahead Why sometimes we don't actually dislike Monday—we dislike what we're returning to How meaningful work can completely change the way Monday feels Preparing ahead without sacrificing your entire Sunday to worrying about tomorrow Creating simple Monday rituals with music, breakfast, reflection, prayer, or something else you enjoy Setting one achievable goal instead of overwhelming yourself Recognizing when exhaustion, loneliness, job dissatisfaction, relationships, or poor boundaries may be underneath your Monday dread Focusing on what you can control instead of everything you can't Giving yourself permission to reset at any point during the day Letting go of perfection and beginning the week with grace I also welcomed participation from listeners on Facebook and invited everyone to think about a simple question: What would make your Monday better? Sometimes the answer doesn't require changing your entire life. A small adjustment, a meaningful connection, or simply giving yourself a little more grace can change the direction of your day. 💙 Your Home for Everything Blissful Connections Want to listen to previous episodes, learn more about the show, participate live, explore my coaching options, or find all the ways to connect with me? Living Authentically: Finding Your Own Box of Rain with Leonard Shostak (Hardy Brooklyn)

What does it really mean to live authentically in a world that often encourages us to fit into someone else’s mold? In this episode of Blissful Connections, I’m joined by Leonard Shostak, better known as Hardy Brooklyn, founder of Box of Rain, life and business coach, entrepreneur, speaker, and host of the Free & Open Mind Podcast. Together, we explore what authenticity really looks like, how limiting beliefs often originate from other people’s fears rather than our own, and why coaching is less about giving advice and more about helping people discover their own answers. We also discuss emotional intelligence, healthy boundaries, entrepreneurship, coaching versus therapy, AI and privacy, wellness, relationships, and practical ways to move forward when life feels overwhelming. Finding Love Beyond First Impressions

Finding meaningful relationships isn't about making the perfect first impression—it's about building authentic connections rooted in confidence, communication, respect, and self-worth. In this episode of Blissful Connections, I shared highlights from a recent dating workshop for blind and visually impaired individuals, along with my own personal experiences navigating dating, social anxiety, online dating, and learning to believe that there truly is someone for everybody. Together, we explored practical dating strategies that apply whether you're blind, sighted, or anywhere in between. What We Covered Meeting People Naturally Community organizations Church groups Conferences Volunteer opportunities Public transportation Why shared interests create stronger relationships Dating Apps & Accessibility Hinge Facebook Dating Tinder Bumble Accessibility challenges AI tools assisting blind users Avoiding online dating scams Social Anxiety & Confidence Walking into crowded rooms Starting conversations Navigating large social gatherings Building confidence one interaction at a time Dating With Intention Avoiding the friend zone Communicating romantic interest Dating as a mutual interview Setting healthy expectations Self-Love Before Romance One of the most powerful questions discussed was: Would you date yourself? We explored why confidence, emotional health, and self-awareness are some of the greatest gifts we can bring into any relationship. Green Flags & Red Flags We discussed recognizing healthy relationships through: Kindness Respect Honest communication Shared values Healthy boundaries We also talked about recognizing warning signs including: Manipulation Controlling behavior Dishonesty Poor communication Ignoring boundaries Hope For The Journey One of my favorite takeaways from the evening was this simple reminder: There really is someone for everybody. While we're waiting for the right relationship, we can continue growing, building friendships, becoming healthier versions of ourselves, and remaining open to meaningful connection. Fathers, Faith & Authentic Strength: Legacy in Motion from Boys to Men

In this special Father's Day-inspired episode of Blissful Connections, I reflect on an incredible event I recently had the honor of speaking at: Legacy in Motion: From Boys to Men. With permission from Miriam "The Thankful Revolution" Stevens, I shared portions of the event, including my own presentation and powerful clips from fellow speakers who challenged us to rethink masculinity, fatherhood, leadership, emotional intelligence, and what authentic strength truly looks like. This conversation explored what happens when men move beyond outdated expectations and embrace vulnerability, compassion, responsibility, faith, and emotional honesty. Throughout the episode, we discussed fatherhood, healing, mentorship, youth leadership, emotional resilience, and the importance of creating a legacy built on presence rather than perfection. What We Covered Redefining Masculinity Why vulnerability is not weakness Challenging the "man up" mentality The impact of emotional suppression Breaking free from toxic masculinity Why emotional intelligence matters Fatherhood & Presence Fatherhood as a lifelong journey The importance of showing up consistently Why children value presence over presents Healing father-child relationships The role of mentors and father figures Mental Health & Emotional Resilience Managing anger in healthy ways Learning emotional regulation Building supportive communities for men Why seeking help is a sign of strength Becoming a container instead of a sponge for emotions Faith & Authentic Strength Christ-centered leadership Spiritual growth and personal responsibility Prayer, forgiveness, and healing Developing authentic confidence Living with purpose and integrity Youth Leadership & Legacy Lessons from Journey, a young athlete and emerging leader Encouraging boys to embrace emotional honesty Teaching resilience, empathy, and teamwork Building healthier examples for future generations My Personal Reflection One of the biggest themes from this episode is that authentic strength is not about pretending you have everything figured out. Authentic strength is having the courage to face your emotions. Authentic strength is being present. Authentic strength is choosing empathy over ego. Authentic strength is embracing who God created you to be. As someone who grew up without my biological father present, this conversation was especially meaningful. My journey has taught me that healing, growth, and leadership are available to all of us regardless of our past. Blind, Independent & Worthy of Love

In this heartfelt and deeply personal episode of Blissful Connections, I explore a question that many people—especially those living with disabilities, life challenges, or self-doubt—have asked themselves at one time or another: Am I worthy of love? As someone who has been blind my entire life, there have been moments when I've questioned whether I was independent enough, capable enough, confident enough, or worthy enough to build meaningful relationships and live the life I truly desire. Inspired by a recent workshop hosted by HAVIN (Houston Area Visually Impaired Network), this episode features reflections on blindness, independence, family dynamics, dating, relationships, self-advocacy, confidence, faith, and personal growth. Throughout the show, I share selected clips from the workshop along with my own experiences growing up blind in Texas and Mexico, navigating friendships and dating, building independence, hosting radio shows, participating in Toastmasters, and learning that self-worth is about much more than what we can or cannot see. In This Episode Family, Independence & Self-Advocacy Growing up blind and learning to trust myself Family support versus overprotection Building confidence through independence Why advocacy begins with believing in yourself The shift from dependency to interdependency Dating, Relationships & Confidence Dating while blind When and how to disclose a disability Fear of rejection and being misunderstood Blind versus sighted relationships Building confidence before seeking connection Personal Growth & Self-Worth Why blindness was never my biggest challenge Emotional intelligence and self-awareness Learning to stop defining myself by limitations The role of confidence, resilience, and healing Discovering that worthiness comes from within Community, Faith & Hope Real stories of love, marriage, and connection Community support within the blindness community The role of faith and perseverance Why meaningful relationships are possible for everyone Encouragement for those who may be feeling discouraged Special Thanks A special thank you to HAVIN (Houston Area Visually Impaired Network) for hosting the workshop that inspired this episode and for allowing me to share selected audio clips and insights from the event. Learn more about HAVIN: 🌐 HAVIN – Houston Area Visually Impaired Network Their workshops, community programs, and advocacy efforts continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals throughout Texas and beyond. Audience Participation One of my favorite parts of this episode was hearing from listeners and community members who joined the conversation live. Together, we explored: Family relationships Dating experiences Confidence struggles Success stories Faith journeys Technology and accessibility The future of independence for blind individuals Your willingness to share your stories made this episode far more meaningful than anything I could have created alone.
