Why Are We So Busy? The Difference Between Busy and Productive

When did being busy become something we're proud of? “Busy” has almost become the default answer when someone asks how life is going. Work is busy. Weekends are busy. Family life is busy. Even our downtime somehow gets filled with something else. But there’s a bigger question hiding underneath all of it: Are we actually being productive, or are we just busy? In this episode of the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, John Adams and Crystal Nevedale take an honest look at our obsession with staying busy and how easily productivity, ambition, distraction, and even guilt can start blending together. And they're the first to admit they haven't figured it all out. John and Crystal talk about their own packed schedules, trying to juggle work and family, feeling guilty when they're doing “nothing,” turning downtime into work time, and those days when you've been moving nonstop only to wonder what you actually accomplished. Because being busy and being productive aren't necessarily the same thing. As John points out, you can spend hours answering messages, scrolling, jumping between projects, and constantly switching tasks while still ending the day feeling like nothing actually got finished.  They also dig into something even bigger: What is all that productivity supposed to be for? If we're working this hard to build a better life for ourselves and the people we love, but we're constantly too busy to actually spend time with those people, where's the line?  Crystal also raises a simple question worth thinking about: Do you intentionally set aside time every day for the people you love, or do you just hope there will be time left over?  Maybe the goal isn't to stop being busy. Maybe it's to make sure we're busy with the right things. We Actually Believed This?! The Wild Things We Were Told as Kids

Remember when swallowing gum meant it would stay in your stomach for seven years? Or going outside with wet hair would give you pneumonia? And whatever you do... DON'T swallow a watermelon seed.  This week on the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, John Adams and Crystal Nevedale are having a little fun and looking back at all the things we were told growing up that we just... believed. No Google. No smartphones. No instant fact-checking. If your parents, grandparents, teachers, or some kid on the playground said it with enough confidence, it basically became scientific fact.  We revisit some of the classics: Swallowed gum stays in your stomach for seven yearsWet hair will make you sickWatermelon seeds will grow in your stomachCracking your knuckles causes arthritisCoffee stunts your growthReading in the dark ruins your eyesTurning on the car's interior light while driving is illegalTouching a toad gives you warts"Because I said so""Money doesn't grow on trees"You'll always need to know math because you won't have a calculator in your pocketCursive will be important your entire lifeDon't meet strangers from the internet That last one aged particularly well considering we now get into strangers' cars, sleep in strangers' houses, and have strangers deliver food directly to our doors. And then there are all the things people were convinced would never catch on: buying things online, cameras on phones, streaming TV... and somehow we've ended up living in exactly that world. This isn't a serious fact-checking episode. It's two people looking back, laughing at how much the world has changed, and realizing that maybe our parents weren't wrong about everything. So what did YOU completely believe as a kid that turned out to be totally wrong? Drop it in the comments. We want to hear the best ones.  The Drive Newsletter: https://htwpodcast.riverside.com/newsletter Book a Riverside one-on-one coaching session with me: 👉 https://amplify.living95.com/riversidecoaching Book a free Amplify discovery call: 👉 https://amplify.living95.com Living95 Website: https://www.living95.com Email: mailto:johnadams@living95.com Crystal’s Treasure Box: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CRYSTALSTREASUREBOXVERMILIONOHIO Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crystalstreasurebox Recorded with Riverside (Affiliate) https://riverside.sjv.io/OeP6jG Gear I Use Affiliate links: Elgato Teleprompter: https://amzn.to/3JdZE8L Apple M4 Mac Mini (256GB): https://amzn.to/4qxRr00 Camera Mount: https://amzn.to/3WTUKkf Shure MV7+ Microphone: https://amzn.to/3L5E0nK If you purchase through these links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. #HealthTechWellness #ThingsWeBelieved #ChildhoodMyths #GrowingUp #Nostalgia #Podcast Song: FuryMusic by http://CreatorMix.com

Why We Feel Like We Can’t Fail the People We Love

“I can’t fail.” It sounds motivational. But what happens when it stops being about you and starts being about the people you love? In this episode of the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, John and Crystal talk about the pressure we put on ourselves when we feel responsible for everyone around us. Family, spouses, kids, grandkids, friends. The more people we love, the easier it can become to convince ourselves that we have to hold everything together. But are the people around us actually expecting that? Or are we carrying a burden they never asked us to carry? John and Crystal get personal about guilt, asking for help, letting go of control, and why sometimes the best thing we can do for the people we love is give them room to struggle, learn, and grow on their own. Because maybe failure isn't falling short. Maybe the real failure is believing you have to carry everything alone. When Life Gets Busy, What Are You Letting Slip? | Getting Back on Track

Life gets busy. Work takes over. Family needs you. Your schedule fills up. And somewhere along the way, the things you were doing to take care of yourself start disappearing. In this episode of the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, Crystal and I are calling ourselves out. 😂 We've both let some of our routines slip lately, especially when it comes to movement, exercise, and making time for our own physical and mental health. But this isn't about beating ourselves up or pretending we're going to completely change our lives overnight. It's about recommitting. For me, that means getting back to walking, stretching, moving my body, and creating some space in the morning before immediately jumping into work. For Crystal, it means rebuilding consistency while working around an ankle injury and a packed schedule. Neither of us is starting from perfect. We're just starting again. And that's really the challenge for this episode: What have YOU let slip lately? Maybe it's your health. Maybe it's a relationship. Maybe it's something you used to do for yourself. Whatever it is, you don't have to fix everything today. Just decide what matters… and recommit to it. Why Do We Feel Like We Have to Answer Everyone Immediately?

Your phone rings. A text comes in. Your boss messages after work. A family member sees that you read their message. And suddenly you feel like you have to respond. But why? In this episode of the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, Crystal and I talk about something that's become completely normal: being available to everyone, all the time. We remember when leaving the house actually meant being unreachable. There were no texts waiting in your pocket, no read receipts, no work emails following you home, and no expectation that because someone can reach you, they deserve an immediate response. Crystal has gotten surprisingly good at putting her phone away completely. I... have some work to do. 😂 We talk about setting boundaries with work, family, customers and even ourselves, why simply seeing a notification can create pressure to respond, and how technology that's supposed to make our lives easier can leave us feeling permanently on call. Crystal also shares why physically putting her phone away has been one of the best changes she's made for her sleep, relationships and sanity. Look at your phone and ask yourself: What has access to me that probably doesn't need unlimited access to me? Pick one notification, one app, or one boundary and change it. Technology should make life easier, not make you feel like everyone deserves access to you 24/7. Too Busy to Take a Break? Try This Instead (The Power of Micro-Breaks)

What if taking better care of yourself didn’t require an hour at the gym, an afternoon off, or a week-long vacation? Sometimes, you just need five minutes. In this episode of the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, John Adams and Crystal Nevedale talk about something they’re both dealing with in real time: what happens when life and work are going great, but you’re moving so fast that taking care of yourself starts slipping through the cracks. We tend to think a “break” has to mean stopping everything. But when you’re in a busy season, that often isn’t realistic. So instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity to recharge, John and Crystal explore the power of micro-breaks, small intentional moments that can help you step away, reset, and come back with a little more clarity. In this episode, we talk about: Why being busy with GOOD things can still lead to burnoutThe trap of thinking self-care has to be all or nothingWhy simply stopping and breathing for a moment can matterThe 20-20-20 rule for giving your eyes a break from screensHow hyperfocus can make stepping away harderWhy we sometimes accidentally turn our “breaks” into more workFinding the smallest version of self-care you can actually sustainGiving yourself permission to stop without feeling guilty The Drive Newsletter: https://htwpodcast.riverside.com/newsletter Book a Riverside one-on-one coaching session with me: 👉 https://amplify.living95.com/riversidecoaching Book a free Amplify discovery call: 👉 https://amplify.living95.com Living95 Website: https://www.living95.com Email: johnadams@living95.com Crystal’s Treasure Box: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CRYSTALSTREASUREBOXVERMILIONOHIO Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crystalstreasurebox Recorded with Riverside (Affiliate) https://riverside.sjv.io/OeP6jG Gear I Use Affiliate links: Elgato Teleprompter: https://amzn.to/3JdZE8L Apple M4 Mac Mini (256GB): https://amzn.to/4qxRr00 Camera Mount: https://amzn.to/3WTUKkf Shure MV7+ Microphone: https://amzn.to/3L5E0nK If you purchase through these links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. #MicroBreaks #BurnoutPrevention #WorkLifeBalance #MentalWellness #SelfCare #HealthyHabits #StressManagement #Living95 Song: FuryMusic by http://CreatorMix.com

Kendall Breitman on Success, Balance & Finding a Life Beyond Your Career

Who are you when you peel back the job title, the career, and everything people know you for? This week on the Health, Tech & Wellness Podcast, Crystal and I sit down with Kendall Breitman, Head of Community at Riverside, for a conversation I've wanted to have for a long time. Kendall opens up about balancing an always-connected career with being a wife and mom, learning when to switch off, recognizing overwhelm before it becomes burnout, and why she believes creating something you genuinely love matters more than chasing views or sponsorships. We also talk about her journey from political journalism to community building, leaving behind a career that looked successful from the outside, moving across the world for love, and completely redefining what success meant to her. This is a conversation about people. Kendall, thank you again for trusting us with your story and for being the perfect first guest for Crystal and I.
