    Matrescence Is Adolescence for Moms

    A quick takeaway from my conversation with Amy Taylor-Kabbaz about one of the biggest women’s experiences we barely name: matrescence. Matrescence is the physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual change a woman goes through when she becomes a mother. It’s being studied as the equivalent of adolescence in its scope and depth. When a teenager is struggling, we say, “Of course. They’re in adolescence.” New moms deserve that same understanding. Becoming a mom was the most spectacular thing that ever happened to me. It was also the most difficult. Having a word for it helps. Listen to the full conversation with Amy here. One story stays with me: a man walking up to her fashion shoot and asking, "What about me?" Most of us see hard things and file them away under, "What can you do?" Dorrie answered that. Instead of only giving, she built a way for women to give to themselves. She didn't have a giant plan. She had an idea, and she kept going.     Why Roar Exists: Advocacy Beyond Political Office

    In 2017, I ran for local office. I lost that race, but I also I walked away wondering if there wasn’t a better way to fight for women than what I'd just spent all this time doing. Seven years later, I started a podcast to answer that question.
