Happy Sportstober! The NFL's Backup QB Crisis, College Football Chaos & Bella's Powder Puff Recap

Welcome to Sportstober. Jason coined it on air, and he's calling dibs. Jason and Bella kick off the best month of the year in sports with college football, the NFL, the MLB and WNBA playoffs, the NHL's return, three F1 races and the NBA opener later this month. Bella also recaps her powder puff run: her junior team beat one senior team, then lost the final to the other. Bella's topic is the quarterback injury wave hitting the NFL. Six NFC teams had to start a backup in the first three weeks, which has never happened in one conference since the 1970 merger. Baker Mayfield's dislocated thumb makes it seven. Bella explains why: quarterbacks are running more than ever, they're starting younger, and their first real hits come in Week 1. Then she makes the case for the backups, from Case Keenum (38 years old, third string, 27-7 over the undefeated Eagles) to Marcus Mariota's upset of the defending champs. Do any of them keep the job? Jason says no. Bella thinks Washington might have a QB battle. Jason breaks down a wild weekend in college football. No. 21 Florida beat No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28 in Jon Sumrall's first season. Wisconsin came back from 20-3 in the fourth quarter to beat Penn State, Iowa beat Michigan on a touchdown with 2 seconds left, and No. 1 Texas barely got past Tennessee. Bella's Powder Puff Debut, the Girls Flag Football Boom & the College Sports Bill That Leaves Players Out

Jason and Bella are back after a week off. Junior year is no joke. Bella breaks down girls flag football, which went from a homecoming novelty to an Olympic sport in under a decade. Over 100,000 girls played in high school last year, up more than 500% in four years. So what's behind it: Title IX, NFL money, or just a sport anyone can play? And since Bella suits up at corner for her junior powder puff team tonight, you get her coverage schemes and her flag-pulling technique too. Jason takes on the Protect College Sports Act, which would write one national set of rules for college sports. Athletes get guaranteed rights. Schools get protection from lawsuits. Players never got a seat at the table. Bella gives her take as an Olympic-sport athlete: some cap is good for competition, paid athletes are employees, and no organization should be immune from lawsuits forever. Plus: Bella ranks her concerts (Taylor, Noah Kahan, Bruno), wins their fantasy matchup by about 40 points, and they give their first College and NFL Top 5s of the season. Topics this week: Girls flag football: 100K+ players, 24 states and the 2028 LA OlympicsBella's powder puff game plan, from man coverage to the two-hand flag pullProtect College Sports Act: what athletes get, what schools get, and why the NAACP and players' unions oppose itCody Campbell, Texas Tech and $30M in lobbyingFive starting QBs hurt through two weeks, and who plays QB for the Bears Monday night?Marcus Freeman's Texas Roadhouse lessonTop 5s: Texas, Notre Dame, Georgia, Miami, Ole Miss / Seahawks vs. Bills at #1What's ahead: F1 Baku's Saturday race, Bengals at Steelers, Eagles at Bears and the NHL opener#StatsAndChats #FlagFootball #GirlsFlagFootball #LA28 #PowderPuff #ProtectCollegeSportsAct #CollegeFootball #NIL #TitleIX #NFL #FantasyFootball #ChicagoBears #MiamiHurricanes #TexasLonghorns #F1 #AzerbaijanGP #SportsPodcast #Episode66

Kimi Wins From 19th, Our Fantasy Draft Showdown & Locking In Season Predictions

Labor Day edition, and college football is finally back. Jason and Bella open with Week 1 reactions — Miami looking unstoppable out in Palo Alto, and the mystery second in Ann Arbor that let Michigan escape Western Michigan in the most controversial finish of the weekend. Then Monza: Kimi Antonelli starts 19th after an engine penalty and wins his home Grand Prix, the first driver to do that all season. Bella takes a well-earned victory lap on calling him as a breakout driver a year and a half ago, and makes the case that nobody else on the grid could have driven that race. Bella then breaks down our fantasy league draft position by position — Drake Maye versus Jalen Hurts at quarterback, the Jonathan Taylor and Ashton Jeanty backfield she concedes is the best in the league, CeeDee Lamb and Davante Adams against Tee Higgins and A.J. Brown, and the Colston Loveland pick she's still mad about. Plus which player will make the biggest difference on each roster. Jason takes on fifth-year eligibility and the chaos it's created in both college and pro football. The 5-in-5 rule explained cleanly — what it is, who it covers, why redshirts are gone — then the four courts in four weeks that have thrown out pieces of it, why LSU won its case and still left two players off the roster, why Jack Pyburn stayed in the NFL and took a pay cut to do it, and how Olympic sports get hit three to five times harder than football. Bella's lifeguard analogy might be the best explanation of precedent you'll hear all year. Then we lock in season predictions with no hedging: the college football top four, national championship game, and champion, plus all eight NFL division winners, both conference championship games, and the Super Bowl. We agree on the title more than you'd expect. #StatsAndChats #F1 #ItalianGP #Antonelli #Monza #FantasyFootball #CollegeFootball #NCAA #LSU #Miami #GoCanes #NFLPredictions #Bears #Broncos #SportsPodcast

Mercedes Team Orders Explained, Fantasy Football's Hidden Superpower & Week 0 Picks

Friday night edition. Bella unpacks the Mercedes "drama" from the Dutch Grand Prix that wasn't actually drama at all — why Toto Wolff told George Russell to let Kimi Antonelli through with 16 laps to go, why Russell pushed back on the radio, and why it was a defensive call rather than favoritism, with both Ferraris lurking on fresher tires. She contrasts it with Ferrari's failure to make the same call, leaving Lewis Hamilton stuck behind Charles Leclerc and costing the team a third straight race without a podium — plus the 2002 team-orders scandal that got the practice banned, the code words teams used to get around it, and why the ban was lifted in 2011. Also: Max Verstappen crashing out on lap one of his final home race, and Lando Norris going back-to-back. Then Jason makes the case that screens aren't always the enemy. Fantasy football is the one thing on your phone that actually pulls people together — 83% say it keeps them in touch with friends they'd otherwise lose, more than half say the friendship wouldn't survive without the league, and 63% of those who play against family call it one of the most important things they do for family bonding. Plus the numbers behind the obsession (6.9 hours a week — more than Bella spends on TikTok), why 13-to-20-year-olds are the fastest-growing group in the sport, draft-day strategy for beginners, and what gets lost as pick'em apps take over. Bella names the one app that genuinely makes her feel more connected, and it isn't the one you'd guess. Plus: pumpkin spice season arriving in August, the Pro Bowl getting canceled, Bella's first high school swim meet, why college football has a "Week 0" at all, and predictions on Bill Belichick's North Carolina against No. 23 TCU in Dublin. Next week: Bella grades our fantasy draft, and we make our college football and NFL season predictions. #StatsAndChats #F1 #DutchGP #TeamOrders #Antonelli #GeorgeRussell #Verstappen #LandoNorris #FantasyFootball #FantasyDraft #CollegeFootball #Week0 #Belichick #ProBowl #SportsPodcast

Follow the Money: LIV Golf on Life Support, Who Really Pays College Athletes & F1 Returns

Jason and Bella are back after a few weeks off, and this one's all about money. Bella pulls back the curtain on the NCAA rulebook using her own recruiting process as the guide — when recruiting windows actually open for each sport (and why women's basketball opens a full year before softball), the difference between a recruiting shutdown and a dead period, and the lawsuit brought by an Arizona State swimmer that finally forced schools to start paying athletes. Plus where that money actually goes: football takes about 75%, basketball 17%, and everyone else splits the rest. She breaks down how roster caps replaced scholarship caps, why men's swimming programs are disappearing, and the rule that says athletes can't make up more than 49% of a dorm. Then Jason takes a listener suggestion and digs into LIV Golf's collapse: the Saudi backers pulling out, the season-ending championship canceled two days ago, a mystery investor nobody will name, and stars like Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed heading back to the PGA Tour. The big question for both stories — if you're the athlete, would you rather have money flooding in with no clear structure, or billions guaranteed by a league that might not exist next year? Plus F1 returns from the summer break: Red Bull's driver shuffle after Isack Hadjar's injury, Zandvoort's first-ever sprint, and full predictions for the Dutch Grand Prix. Back in the saddle — let's go. #StatsAndChats #LIVGolf #PGATour #NCAA #CollegeRecruiting #CollegeSwimming #TitleIX #F1 #DutchGP #Zandvoort #Verstappen #Antonelli #NFLPreseason #SpiderMan #SportsPodcast

Norris Wins Hungary, Antonelli's 50-Point Cushion & 10 Big Questions as NFL Camps Open

Jason and Bella are back for a rare Sunday recording — and a loaded one. Bella breaks down the Hungarian Grand Prix hours after the checkered flag: Lando Norris takes his first win of 2026, Oscar Piastri's gearbox lets go on lap 56 with a McLaren 1-2 in sight, Russell stalls on the opening lap and finishes seventh, and Hamilton picks up yet another pit-lane speeding penalty. Kimi Antonelli heads into the summer break with six wins and a 50-point lead — so the two dig into whether anyone can still catch him, including the only comeback in history that comes close (Vettel over Alonso in 2012). Then Jason runs a rapid-fire top 10 questions as NFL training camps open: Mahomes cleared to practice, when Fernando Mendoza takes over in Las Vegas, Aaron Rodgers' last ride in Pittsburgh, the all-in Rams, whether Seattle can repeat without Kenneth Walker, the wide-open QB battles in Cleveland, Minnesota and Atlanta, and which of the four star receivers on the move has the biggest year. Plus the World Cup final wrap (Spain now holds both the men's and women's titles), Ryan Fox's first major at Royal Birkdale, the WNBA All-Star Game, a Senior Champs update from Bella — and a movie prediction: over or under $200 million for Spider-Man's opening weekend. We're taking a few weeks off — thanks for spending the summer with us. #StatsAndChats #F1 #HungarianGP #LandoNorris #Antonelli #Hamilton #NFLTrainingCamp #Mahomes #Rodgers #Rams #Mendoza #WorldCup #Spain #WNBA #SpiderMan #SportsPodcast
