Mini-Series: Conversations with the Breath of Life Leadership Team, Candace Muir Interview

I love, love, love this conversation with my friend and fellow birth professional, Candace Muir. Affectionately known as Candy, she is a professional doula who loves God, family, birth, and babies. Candy is on the leadership team of Breathe of Life (BOL) Christian Birth Workers Association. She serves as BOL’s Community Engagement and Events Coordinator. Our conversation explores what it looks like to care for the whole person—spirit, soul, and body—and why our relationship with Christ influences how we show up for the families we serve. You'll also hear Candy's birth stories and how those experiences influenced her decision to become a doula. Two things Candy shared during our conversation have stayed with me. First, becoming a mom has always been her heart's desire, and she gets to live that calling wholeheartedly. Second, as a homeschooling mom, she treasures the opportunity to watch each of her children develop their own unique personalities and to lean into the way God created them to learn. Now, this introduction may not sound like we're talking about birth, but I promise you—we are! Join us as we explore what it looks like for Candy when God is invited into the birth room. Season 2 Episode 7: Faith in Childbirth & Calling: Yanna Anderson on God’s Plan for Birth Workers

Sometimes the path God uses to prepare you doesn’t look anything like what you expected. In this conversation, I sit with Yanna Anderson—midwife, teacher, mentor, wife, and First Lady—as she reflects on a journey that began long before she stepped into birth work. Even as a child, she was fascinated by childbirth, watching stories unfold with curiosity and questions that would later guide her calling. What unfolds is not just a professional story, but a testimony of how God weaves together every experience—education, marriage, leadership, and service—into something intentional. Yanna’s work as a children’s educator now informs the way she guides women and families in Bible-based childbirth education, showing how teaching, nurturing, and mentorship translate seamlessly into birth support. There is so much goodness and deep conversation to unpack in this episode. We touch on the power of education within the maternal health care system and how that serves as a vehicle for protecting birth and promoting safe motherhood. We explore her role within her marriage and ministry, and how being a wife and First Lady has shaped the way she leads—with discernment, humility, and trust in God. Her current role as a school principal provides background context for how she continues to lead and educate, even outside the birth room. Through the founding of the Black Christian Birthworkers Network, her work reflects a calling that is both deeply personal and clearly directed. She has written a devotional for birth professionals, offers select classes, and created resources that support and equip other birth workers—all reflecting a life lived in step with God’s plan. This conversation is a reminder that faith in childbirth is not only about the moments in the birthing room—it is about the journey that prepares you to serve others fully. God does not waste experiences. He prepares, positions, and reveals—step by step. And when we trust Him enough to move forward without seeing the full picture, we witness how His plans unfold in ways we could never imagine. Season 2 Episode 6: God Is Salvation: When God Shows Up Fast & Furious in the Birth Room—and There Is Still Peace

Sometimes the most powerful conversations almost slip by. This interview almost didn’t happen—we were already deep in conversation when we realized we needed to turn the recorder on. And honestly, that feels fitting for this birth story. What unfolds next is less about a birth plan and more about who God reveals Himself to be in the middle of it. Kamala shares how this birth challenged her expectations—not because she lacked faith, but because even when we know God, we can still unknowingly place limits on how we expect Him to move. We simplify Him. We imagine His presence fitting neatly within what feels familiar, manageable, or previously experienced. But God is not small. He is not bound by our understanding, our timelines, or even our certainty. In this birth, God showed up swiftly and decisively—fast and furious—yet without chaos. What might seem urgent or unexpected to us can still be covered in peace when it is led by Him. Through Kamala’s story, we hear how surrender, discernment, and trust made space for God to do something new. And, we hear the impact it had on her relationship with God and her Her husband. This conversation invites us to reflect on how often we say we trust God—yet still expect Him to operate within the edges of what we already know. Even seasoned mothers, even faithful women, are still being shown more of who He is. This is a story of surprise, listening, and revelation. A reminder that God is always more—more present, more powerful, more intentional—than we can imagine, even when we think we know Him well. And yes, God is salvation. Season 2 Episode 5: Stepping Into the New Year With Praise & Purpose

As we step into a new year, this episode is an invitation to lift your eyes, release old frames of reference, and stay attentive to what God is unfolding right now.In this first episode of 2026, I give glory and praise to God for being my source—not just in 2025, but throughout my entire life. I reflect on what it means to truly trust Him in my career and vocation, and how that obedience overflowed into unexpected blessings in my personal life, especially the gift of family & fellowship. At one point in this new year, I found myself saying, “Here we go again.” But the Holy Spirit gently corrected me. "This isn’t going backward. This isn’t repetition." God reminded me not to frame new movement through old language, because He has already told us not to dwell on the former things. This episode is about recognizing when God is doing something new, even when it doesn’t look the way we expected, and choosing faith over familiar narratives. Be blessed and share this podcast with your community. Let's focus on being each others keeper.Scripture referenced in this episode: Isaiah 43:18–21 “Do not remember the former things, Or ponder the things of the past. Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert. The beasts of the field will honor Me, Jackals and ostriches,Because I have given waters in the wilderness And rivers in the desert, To give drink to My people, My chosen. The people whom I formed for Myself Will make known My praise.” RESOURCES Share Your Birth Story Request a Podcast Interview Get Yourself the Book Invite God Into Your Birth Room: The Art of Spiritual Strategy for the Childbearing Year Attend Childbirth Education & Hire a Doula Kingdom Birth Services Invite Me: Media & Speaking Author Media & Speaking Engagements Schedule a Consultation Just Us Women Productions – Consultation Scheduling

Mini-Series: Conversations with the Breath of Life Leadership Team, Carly Waller Interview

"I was called to be a nurse in college, and I was created to be a midwife." Update* This episode is now part of the mini-series "Conversations with the Breath of Life Christian Birthworkers Association Leadership Team." Be sure to explore the other interviews in this series as we hear from leaders serving families through faith-centered birth work. Carly is on the leadership team of Breathe of Life (BOL) Christian Birthworkers Association. She is BOL’s Co-Founder, Chief Coordinator, and Spiritual Advisor. In this episode, midwife Carly Waller shares her personal journey from childhood faith to discovering her true calling in midwifery. Together we explore her vocational story, the transition from corporate healthcare to the freedom to support physiological birth, and what guided her decision to make that shift. This conversation offers meaningful insight for anyone considering—or already working within—the birth world: midwives, doulas, nurses, lactation specialists, or OB/GYNs. Carly’s story encourages you to consider how to posture your heart so that throughout your walk, you can hear where God is guiding you. I realized after recording the first few episodes of Season 2 that my audio came out low. Turn up the volume so you don’t miss anything. This long-form conversation is full of Kingdom-centered wisdom. If you need to pause, take your time, just be sure to come back. Carly’s insights are worth it. Carly is a Certified Nurse-Midwife with a private homebirth and well-woman practice in North Carolina. She has been a nurse since 2003 and a midwife since 2018. Her experience includes birth center midwifery and a hospital-based collaborative practice with physicians before launching her own practice. She believes she was called to be a nurse, created to be a midwife, and commissioned to start New Eden Birth & Wellness PLLC as well as the Breath of Life Christian Birthworkers Association. Carly has been married for more than 19 years, with a daughter in college and a son in high school. Season 2 Episode 3: VBAC Story – When God Rewrote My Birth

Welcome to our first interview episode with one of my doula moms. It’s amazing how quickly time passes, while we chatted about her birth, it felt like it happened just yesterday. Ericka is a mom of two, and I had the honor of supporting her and her husband during their second birth. In her own words, this episode is about her journey as a C-section/VBAC mother—VBAC stands for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. Ericka shares both of her birth stories, highlighting what led her to hire a doula for the second birth. One thing was clear: as a couple, they approached the experience in one accord, supporting each other every step of the way. I believe it’s important for families to share their birth stories—the positive moments and the challenging ones. There is wisdom to be gained by learning from others’ experiences, and every story has something to offer someone else walking a similar path. We’ll explore: Ericka’s journey through her first birth and her decision-making process for the second. The role of a doula in supporting VBAC and guiding families in self-advocacy. How partnership and alignment between parents can shape the birth experience. Lessons learned and encouragement for other families navigating similar paths. Join us as we celebrate faith, preparation, and the beauty of working together in the birth room. Season 2 Episode 2: Honest Questions About Christianity & Birth Work

In this episode, we’re diving into three honest questions that come up more often than people admit, questions I’ve discussed with many birth professionals who follow Christ. Even when they aren’t asked out loud, you can be sure others are wondering the same things: Do I have to be a Christian to work with a Christian doula? What are the benefits of working with a Christian doula if I’m not Christian or religious? If I’m a doula, should I only work with Christian families? These questions sit at the intersection of faith, professionalism, and the deeply personal nature of birth work. Together, we’ll explore how to hold your convictions while serving families with compassion, integrity, and excellence—no matter their belief system. I close the episode with a special invitation to all birth professionals: If you’re longing for deeper spiritual grounding in your work, grab a copy of Invite God Into Your Birth Room: The Art of Spiritual Strategy for the Childbearing Year. As birth workers, we’re always searching for tools and resources to help us serve well. My encouragement to you is this: Start with the Word of God. Bring your questions to the Lord in prayer. Partner with the Kingdom of God, don't just be a Christian doing things. And....when you’re ready, let this book support you as you build a strong foundation of faith in your birth business. Season 2 Episode 1: Who Do You Say You Are? Identity in the Birth Room

Identity shapes how we walk through the world, and for many, how we walk through pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. As we begin Season Two, we’re stepping into something special. This season will feature conversations with mothers, families, and birth workers who have welcomed God into their birth experiences. Their stories and testimonies have been on my heart since the earliest days of writing the book, and now the timing is finally right. Not because anyone was delayed, but because this is the season God appointed for these conversations to unfold. Today, we’re starting with a foundational question: Who are you?More specifically, who does God say you are, and how does that identity shape the ongoing struggles we see in maternal health? And for believers, what happens when the world’s definition of identity doesn’t align with God’s? We’ll explore: How identity influences the challenges faced by those giving birth today Why the conversation shifts when you’re a follower of Christ What Scripture reveals about who you were created to be How reclaiming your God-given identity strengthens your walk -- in life and in the birth room Scriptures referenced in this episode: Jeremiah 1:4–6 Genesis 1:27 Ephesians 2:10 1 Peter 2:9 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 Psalm 139:13 James 5:16 This season, we’re not avoiding the hard topics—we’re stepping fully into our Father’s work, both inside and outside the birth room. If this episode blesses you, share it with your circle. Encourage the birth workers you know, doulas, nurses, midwives—to use these conversations as a spark for deeper dialogue about their spiritual walk and their calling in birth work. Someone in your community needs this message.
