Episode 73 Rowing Friends from the Vault

We are pulling out one of our favorite episode from the Rowing Friends Vault. Rowing Friends welcomed Matt Logue, UB Crew Alumni to the podcast.  The group caught up on personal updates and discussed Matt's current roles, including his position as executive director at 3 Rivers Rowing Association and his work on the US Rowing Safety Committee. They explored safety concerns in rowing, with Matt highlighting the importance of life jackets, swimming abilities, and heat guidelines, while emphasizing the need for a conversational approach to safety rather than a punitive one. The conversation shifted to the unique challenges of rowing compared to other sports, and Kate shared her perspective as a new parent in the rowing community.  Discussions touched on indoor training facilities, ergometer testing, and the challenges faced by returning rowers. The group also explored plans for future events, including a potential UB alumni boat for the Head of the Ohio race and the organization of a "Return to Row Day" in 2026. Episode 72 Rowing Friends with Charlotte Lillie Balogh

We are so excited to share this episode with Charlotte Balogh, author of the upcoming young adult novel "Capsized," which is based on her high school rowing experiences and will be released on September 8th. Charlotte discussed her dual background in rowing and writing, explaining how she started conceptualizing the book in 2017 and began writing it in 2018 while working as an executive assistant at DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers. She described the challenging journey to publication, including rejections from publishers who wanted more romance or mystery elements, the eventual sale to Hulu for TV adaptation, and her efforts to balance rowing terminology for both rowing enthusiasts and general readers. The conversation covered topics like toxic competition in sports, the intentional inclusion of diverse characters beyond stereotypes about elite rowing, and Charlotte's current coaching at Row LA while living in Los Angeles. The interview also touched on her upcoming book tour events in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Syracuse, where she will be promoting "Capsized" and connecting with rowing teams and readers.
