OHIO STATE'S LOSS TO USC WASN'T ABOUT HAVING A FRESHMAN QUARTERBACK. IT WAS A COMPLETE FAILURE BY THE COACHING STAFF. The Buckeyes went into USC facing a difficult situation following Julian Sayin's season-ending injury. Luke Fahey was making his first career start, and everyone understood there would be challenges and growing pains. But what we saw against USC went far beyond the mistakes of a young quarterback. This loss falls squarely on the shoulders of Ryan Day and the Ohio State coaching staff. In this episode of the I-71 Rundown, I'm breaking down Ohio State's loss to USC and explaining why I believe this was one of the most frustrating coaching performances of the Ryan Day era. From the preparation leading up to the game, to the offensive game plan, the play-calling, the mistakes during the game, and the way Ohio State handled its freshman quarterback, there was a failure at nearly every level. THE COACHING STAFF FAILED LUKE FAHEY. Everyone knew Ohio State would have to make adjustments with a true freshman taking over at quarterback. So why did the offensive approach look the way it did? We discuss the decisions made before and during the game, whether the coaching staff put Fahey in a position to succeed, and why the responsibility for this performance extends well beyond the quarterback. THE SAME MISTAKES. THE SAME FEARS. THE SAME RESULTS. My biggest frustration isn't simply that Ohio State lost a football game. It's that many of the problems we've seen throughout Ryan Day's tenure continue to show up in critical moments. We discuss Day's approach to big games, his decision-making, his apparent fear of failure, and why I believe that fear continues to influence the way Ohio State plays football. At some point, recognizing mistakes isn't enough. You have to learn from them. You have to change. And I'm increasingly concerned that Ryan Day is unwilling to make the changes necessary to take this program where it needs to go. MY EXPECTATIONS FOR RYAN DAY HAVE CHANGED. I've spent plenty of time evaluating Ohio State based on its talent, its potential, and what I believe this program is capable of accomplishing. But after watching another performance filled with coaching mistakes, I'm beginning to reconsider what I should realistically expect from a Ryan Day-led team. We discuss why my perspective has changed, what I believe Day's biggest limitations are, and whether the same problems will continue to prevent Ohio State from reaching its potential. IT'S TIME FOR CHANGES ON THE OFFENSIVE STAFF. This isn't just about criticizing Ryan Day. We also need to have a serious conversation about the coaches responsible for preparing and developing Ohio State's offense. I explain why I believe certain offensive assistants should lose their jobs, why accountability has to extend throughout the coaching staff, and why simply running it back with the same approach isn't good enough. TOPICS INCLUDE: Ohio State vs. USC full game reaction Why I believe this was a complete coaching failure The preparation leading up to the USC game Ohio State's offensive game plan Questionable play-calling and in-game decisions Mistakes that contributed to the loss How the coaching staff handled Luke Fahey's first start Why the freshman quarterback shouldn't shoulder the blame Ryan Day's recurring coaching mistakes The fear of failure and its impact on Ohio State's offense Why my expectations for Ryan Day have changed The importance of learning from previous failures Accountability within Ohio State's offensive coaching staff Why I believe offensive coaching changes are necessary What this loss means for the future of Ohio State football THE BIG QUESTION: At what point do we stop expecting Ryan Day to change and start accepting that this might simply be who he is as a head coach? Losing a game with a true freshman quarterback is understandable. Failing to prepare that quarterback, failing to adjust your approach, and repeating the same coaching mistakes we've seen before is something entirely different. The injury to Julian Sayin created a difficult situation. But it didn't excuse the decisions that followed. Ohio State has the resources, talent, and expectations of a championship program. The coaching has to meet that standard. And after what we saw against USC, I believe some difficult conversations and difficult decisions are necessary. Let me know in the comments: How much blame do you put on Ryan Day and the coaching staff? Do you believe Day can change his approach, or have we reached the point where this is simply what we should expect?
