Back to Heavy Lifting: 190kg Deadlift & Week 1 Reality | MM in Motion #46

My grip gave out before my strength did. Switching from double overhand to mixed grip got me to a 190kg deadlift—but my traps and back definitely felt it afterwards. In Mere Mortals in Motion #46, I'm recapping my first week back to focused strength training: returning to heavy deadlifts, how bench and squats are feeling, and keeping one or two runs a week alongside the lifting. I also talk about that familiar first-week feeling: everything feels heavy, and it's hard to imagine adding another 5–10kg. Based on my previous training blocks, I'm looking forward to feeling more comfortable under the bar over the next few weeks. Plus, a quick update on daily workout clips, weekly training recaps, and sleep with a young family. What hits you hardest in your first week back: grip, soreness, or just getting used to heavy weights again? Let me know below. I’m Spending 60 Days Getting Stronger | Mere Mortals in Motion #45

For the next 60 days, I’m returning to strength training and documenting the work as I go. After spending much more time running, I want to find out where I stand with the bench press, squat, deadlift and overhead press. I’m fitting that training around family life, and I’ll need to be sensible about a lingering left bicep tendon issue as I bring the deadlift back. In this episode, I talk through why I’m doing it, where I think my lifts are now, and what you can expect to see over the next two months. Chapters: 0:00 Why I’m documenting the next 60 days 1:01 Getting back to strength 1:27 Making time to create along the way 2:57 The four lifts I want to work on 3:15 Where my strength stands now 4:03 Returning to deadlifts carefully 5:11 What’s coming next What would you focus on for 60 days? You Don’t Need to Finish Every Workout | Mere Mortals in Motion #44

You planned the perfect workout. Then life happened. Does getting through 70–80% of it still count as a win? Absolutely. In Mere Mortals in Motion #44, I share a post-workout reflection on planning ambitiously, adapting to the time you actually have, and being happy with what you manage to get done. I talk about early versus later training sessions, how I use AI and previous workout data to plan my week, and why having a plan helps me decide what to cut when time is tight. For busy parents and anyone balancing training with work and life: get what you can, when you can, and do the best with it. What does a successful workout look like for you when the day doesn’t go to plan? Let me know in the comments. A 117.5 kg PB in the Rain… But She Deserves the Thanks | MM in Motion #42

Five workouts, rain, a delayed start and a 117.5 kg personal best. Turf Games delivered but the biggest lesson came from recognising the people who made it possible for me to compete. In Mere Mortals in Motion #42, I recap the weekend’s competition on the Gold Coast, including a clean followed by two push presses at 117.5 kg in the rain. More than anything, this episode is about my wife and the support behind the scenes: looking after our girls, taking our oldest to gymnastics and driving down with a migraine so the family could watch me compete. We notice the training and the performance. It’s easy to overlook the effort that gives us the opportunity to do either. I also share what comes next: easing back on the running and rowing, returning to powerbuilding and bodybuilding, and giving myself some room before choosing the next big challenge. Who helps make your goals possible? Give them a thank you and let me know in the comments.
