No, You're Not Dying

Beth & Joyce

Mother-daughter duo Beth (a PhD clinical psychologist) and Joyce (a chronic over-thinking millennial) love to sit and chat about finding balance in the never-ending ups and downs of life - so much so, that they turned it into a podcast. Join them every week for a candid conversation about the many ways in which life impacts our mental health, how psychology can shift your perspective, and why even if you feel like you’re dying, you’re probably not. Kinda funny, never scripted, always honest - so join the conversation!  To share topics and stay up to date on the show, you can follow them on Instagram @noyourenotdyingpodcast.  **Note: Advice and opinions on this show should not be considered as treatment. Putting Out Fires or Trying to Prevent Them: Which one are you?

Do you know that person whose middle name might be "chaos" and saves everything until the last minute? Or maybe you're familiar with the person who is more cautious than frenzied and likes to get ahead of a problem before it becomes a disaster.  Regardless of which problem-solving style rings more true to you, it turns out that they have far-reaching impacts in your life. Today, we're talking about the rescue vs. prevention styles of life and how your style not only affects how you respond, but what you take away from a situation. We chat through how to figure out what style you are (and how they relate to personality types), their consequences, how context and maturation may force you to change your approach, and the effects your approach can have on the people around you. We also discuss why the majority of people who come to therapy are in rescue-mode, how two people can experience the same thing and take two VERY different things away from it, and what your reactions to a situation can teach you about yourself.  Plus: Joyce is mad about a bear, we're having a TSITP renaissance, & a spider haunts us in the night. About Your Hosts:  Beth is a licensed, Ph.D. clinical psychologist with 40+ years of experience treating patients of all ages.  Joyce is a millennial just trying to figure it all out. The Pain of Losing a Pet

This episode is brought to you by yet another major thunderstorm that you'll hear in the background. Today we're celebrating Ted Lasso's return, recapping our experience seeing Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and once again letting our health anxiety take the wheel while being offered only dirty dimes in return (trust us, it will make sense). Then, we dive into an often overlooked type of grief: mourning the loss of a pet. On paper, it seems like it might be easier to handle, but if you've ever experienced it, you know that it can rival a human loss in a very real way.  We chat about what animals can do for people that other people can't, why our pets can't simply be replaced by another, and how the responsibilities of pet care can help us be less self-centered. We also discuss finding balance between wanting what's best for them versus wanting them to live forever, why the loss of a pet can make us feel that we've lost our purpose, the best way to keep your pets' memory alive, and why you can't delay the grieving process forever. About Your Hosts:  Beth is a licensed, Ph.D. clinical psychologist with 40+ years of experience treating patients of all ages.  Joyce is a millennial just trying to figure it all out. Money, Money, Money: Is it taboo to talk about how much you make?

As a society, we treat talking about our salaries & income like bringing up Voldemort: they shall not be named. There's no denying that money is an intensely personal subject and is more than what's in your pocket. It's tied to power, security, access to things like healthcare, your sense of self-worth, and beyond. But, if we never talk about it, it just gets bigger and scarier in our heads, like a monster in a closet. So is there a "right" way to talk about how much money you make?  Today, we're talking about how to talk about money. We get into the differences between discussions with coworkers and family & friends, why it's okay to be proud (and how to steer clear of bragging), and how to balance envy with feeling excited for someone's success.  We also chat about "benevolent benefactor syndrome", separating your self-worth from your income and why money isn't a judge of character, how talking about money can help us set expectations, and why *asking* someone if they're comfortable speaking about their pay is probably the best solution. Nobody Wants to See Your Toes at the Airport

We came back from vacation feeling...insane. Our lack of sleep and general confusion has resulted in whatever today's episode is.  We start with a recap of our trip and the perils of early morning travel. Notable highlights include the curse of the brussell sprouts, a nearly-broken arm and a run-in with TSA, accidentally breaking out of our own car, and the humiliation that comes with almost knocking over a pilot at Starbucks. Then we get into our biggest travel icks, from flip-flops and full plane meals to coughing and out of control kids. Plus our travel styles and why one of us has the urge to throw away all of our clothes on the trip home (again...insane?) And then of course, the star of the show and the reason we're all here: what to do when you're feeling anxiety about traveling. Whether it's ambivalence about the trip itself and feeling like you should be happy but aren't, or the anticipation of turbulence and feeling like the left phalange might really be broken, we talk about ways to quiet your mind so you can actually have a good time. Hope, Connection, & Bottles of Ranch: Life Lessons from the World Cup

We don't know about you, but stories from the World Cup have taken over our feeds, our brains, and our lives the last few weeks: the tales of Lawrence, KS, the Tartan Army, Cabo Verde's draw, the discovery of ranch dressing, and so much more. And it got us thinking...aside from the actual soccer part (like the insane offside rule which half the time doesn't even make sense when it gets called so does anyone know what it actually is), what can we learn from this global event? Today, we're sharing our biggest takeaways from the World Cup so far. We chat about how it allows us to connect with one another on a basic human level, the perspective you can get from seeing someone experience your country for the first time, and the power of kindness. We also talk about escapism, having a newfound appreciation for the things we take for granted, how pride in your country & wanting things to be better can coexist, and why maybe the stories we're all told about each other aren't really all they're cracked up to be.  About Your Hosts:  Beth is a licensed, Ph.D. clinical psychologist with 40+ years of experience treating patients of all ages.  Joyce is a millennial just trying to figure it all out. Keeping Up with the Kids (On Social Media)

We're back this week with a listener-requested episode! Thank you to you, listener! For many millennials and Gen Z-ers (is that even what you're called?? idk), social media comes naturally. We know how to use it, what platforms are in, and we can pick up what we don't know quickly. But for the parents of us 20-&-30-something-year-old teenagers, it's not quite as easy. And when they want to befriend us online, it can feel like they're encroaching on our space - and embarrassing us while doing it. This week, we're sharing our different perspectives on navigating social media as a parent, whether our kids want us to keep up with it, and what it really means to be "cringe". We talk about why the way you engage with your parents/children on social media is contingent upon your relationship IRL (in real life), how to determine if your motivation is connection or control, and why it's normal for your kid to think everything you do is weird as they search for independence. We also discuss the impact of trying, when to set boundaries, and why we need to appreciate the corny videos our parents send us.
