Four Arrival Stories, Different Chinese Identities in America

The first episode of Season 2 is a lively conversation I recorded in New York. Some of my friends spent teenage years in China before coming to the U.S. for school. Others were born and raised here, grew up speaking Chinese only occasionally at home, or may not speak much Chinese at all. I find myself somewhere in between: I came to the U.S. as a teenager and spent some of my most formative years here, when my values and sense of self were still taking shape. From American born Chinese to those who arrived for grad school, this episode observes how age of arrival quietly shapes the way we think, speak, and make sense of being “Chinese in America.” We talk about our own understandings of being “Chinese,” the similar yet different perspectives between Chinese Americans and international students, and how these identities shape our lives, relationships, and ways of relating to ourselves and the world. I hope this conversation brings some interesting perspectives! When the idea of being “Chinese” first emerged7‘26 大家的自我认同 Self Identification14‘18 审美差异 Aesthetics15‘58 亚裔身份和性少数群体身份 The intersection of Asian identity and queer identity16‘31 养育小孩 Raising Children17‘28 中国超过美国了怎么办 What happens if China surpasses the U.S.?18‘24 最不喜欢的关于中国的刻板印象 Stereotypes — 欢迎大家在以下平台关注我们 ✨T’s Living Room is a bilingual video podcast in Chinese and English, using self-exploration and personal growth as a starting point for authentic conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. From NYC to Hangzhou: One Engineer’s Startup Gamble

After parting ways with Haoyu in New York last November, I’ve often seen him in our group chat talking about how fulfilling it’s been to return to Hangzhou and working as a founder at an AI incubator. Recently, I spent a couple of days in Hangzhou and stopped by his incubator to sit in on one of their incubator’s knowledge share. It genuinely made me happy to see him regain a sense of agency. For this first episode of TT Mobile Living Room, we focus on a software engineer who left a corporate role in the U.S. to return to China and start his business, looking at how his life has changed. No matter what choices we each make, I hope his reflections on identity anxiety, career development, and self-definition offer something to think about as we consider our own paths — 具体内容Content Breakdown: 0’50 嘉宾介绍 Guest Introduction 1’05 回国选择杭州 Why He Moved Back from New York to Hangzhou 2’45 找到创业社群和孵化器 Current State at a AI accelerator in Hangzhou 3’15 在国内重新获得主体性 Rebuilding Agency 4’23 在国内的具体爽点 Favorite Things in Hangzhou 5’22 回国后更像自己的瞬间 Regaining Authentic Self at Work 5’53 会想念的点 Things Went Missing 6’35 创业后打破之前的认知 New Realization as a Founder 7’12 理想生活状态是不活在过渡期 Living Against the Idea of “Transition Phase” — 欢迎大家在以下平台关注我们 ✨T’s Living Room is a bilingual video podcast in Chinese and English, using self-exploration and personal growth as a starting point for authentic conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. T’s Living Room 11|在搬家中重构自己的人生坐标- Rebuilding Our Inner Coordinates While Moving Around

As the final episode of T’s Living Room in 2025, I’ve recently moved back to SF from New York. This is my second time relocating from the East Coast to the West Coast, which makes this episode especially meaningful to me—almost like a natural way to close out the year. When we recorded this episode, we were welcoming a guest who had just moved from SF to New York, while saying goodbye to another guest who was leaving New York and heading back to the Bay Area. Through building community and organizing events in New York, I’ve met many people who have lived in both California and New York. Even though our paths may look similar on the surface, we’ve all grown into very different people. In this conversation, we talk about how we find and define ourselves through repeated moves, and how these trajectories shape both who we become and the relationships around us. As we continue to change our physical coordinates in a foreign place, we’re also rebuilding our mental anchors. What Do We Do When Our Choices Don’t Turn Out as Expected 11‘00 临时生活和过客心态 Temporary Living & the “Passenger” Mindset 13‘31 跟随生活地点改变的心态和性格 How Place Shapes Our Mindset and Personality 15‘00 在不同地方的生活节奏中找自己 Finding Ourselves Through Different Rhythms of Life 19‘00 生活的盼头 What Keeps Us Going 21‘35 重构生活的优先级 Rebuilding Priorities 23‘22 搬家中影响的人际关系 How Moving Reshapes Our Relationships 26’58 快问快答 Rapid-Fire Q&A — 欢迎大家在以下平台关注我们 ✨T’s Living Room is a bilingual video podcast in Chinese and English, using self-exploration and personal growth as a starting point for authentic conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. Shaping Cross-cultural Voices in Fashion Design, Branding, and PR

As someone who’s never really had any connection to the fashion world, I somehow got lucky — through meeting Akio — to be introduced to three new friends, and had a peek into a world I’d never normally be part of. Akio, based in Milan and spending a short time in New York, has rich experience curating fashion and art projects across Europe, the U.S., and China. Joanna is a designer at Tory Burch in New York — someone who turned her long-time design dream into reality. And Joyce, who works in branding and PR at a jewelry company, sees her team as family, while also pursuing her passion as a fashion photographer across major runways and shows. In our conversation, we talked about different aesthetic preferences across cultures, the relationship between storytelling and identity, and what it means to maintain authentic self-expression while working in a global fashion landscape. We also discussed how to curate one’s own life and career path, and how to find a dynamic balance between art and commerce. From design to storytelling, from style to identity — this is a dialogue about expression, choice, and self-construction. Working experiences in the fashion industries across Europe, the U.S., and China 4‘13 不同市场的审美 Aesthetics in different markets 5‘51 少数族裔在跨文化时尚工作中的身份认同和自我表达 Identity and self-expression as minorities in cross-cultural fashion work 8‘58 时尚的速度-意大利vs美国 The pace of fashion: Italy vs. the U.S. 10‘04 时尚的“量化标准”- 艺术性vs 商业性 The “metrics” of fashion: artistry vs. commercial value 11‘27 纽约不同的时尚种类 Different kinds of fashion scenes in New York 12‘42 curate自己的人生/定义自己的personal brand Curating one’s own life and defining a personal brand 17’04 快问快答 Rapid-Fire Q&A — 欢迎大家在以下平台关注我们 ✨T’s Living Room is a bilingual video podcast in Chinese and English, using self-exploration and personal growth as a starting point for authentic conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. Friendship in the US: Choices, Fluidity, and Boundaries from the Perspective of Chinese

In this episode of TT’s Living Room, I invited friends in New York at different life stages to talk about friendship. A few years after graduation, many of us have noticed how making friends—especially in a big city—differs from school: some still long for a core group, while others find one-on-one connections more natural. Some realize that widening their social circle makes certain friendships feel more “transactional,” while others turn hobby partners into acquaintances and eventually close friends. As Chinese living abroad—moving often, with friends scattered across the world—we also discussed periodic friendships, cross-cultural connections, setting boundaries, and the need to normalize the idea of a “friendship breakup.” Making Friends in New York 3’23 在学校 vs. 社会后的交友 Friendship in School vs. Adulthood 4’48 Transactional的朋友 / 友情分类 Transactional Friends & Types of Friendships 7’12 T/F人交友? Sharing a special conversation on the day before graduation. The guests are two close friends I met during my graduate program—Julio, who founded an education social enterprise around design thinking in Ecuador, and Wandy, who worked on educational equity within a governmental agency in Thailand. They were my teammates in many courses, and like me, both returned to school after several years of working. We talked about working in education across different countries, our take on “watered-down” master’s programs at top U.S. schools like Columbia, how we find growth in and outside the system, and the challenges educators often face. It was an open and meaningful conversation—shared as a graduation gift to anyone who believes in the power of education, and to myself.
