Nile Rodgers: "My Only Thought Is: How Can I Make Your Song Better?" | UNSUNG

For Episode 22 of the UNSUNG podcast Dom Dronska (General Manager, Audiomovers) & Matt Soczywko (Head of Marketing, Audiomovers) were joined by music legend Nile Rodgers at Abbey Road Studios in London. In this very special episode, Audiomovers' Chief Collaborator & Chair of the Advisory Board Nile Rodgers offers an incredible journey through his legendary career. Starting off with his work on Duran Duran's "The Reflex" in 1983 and getting back in the studio with them over 40 years later, he opens up about the challenges of dealing with record label pushback and the impact of the "Disco Sucks" movement, alongside the clever tactics he and Bernard Edwards used to navigate their first record deal. Nile shares his philosophy on collaborating with artists, crafting hit records, and how his experience with small budgets fostered his "one take" recording philosophy in his early days which inspired the writing of certain tracks. He discusses the unconventional method Chic used to break their first hit, "Dance, Dance, Dance," and dives into the technical side of his studio process, discussing his experience with digital and analog recording. He recounts fascinating stories from his diverse discography, including the iconic bassline of "Good Times" and his work on films like "Coming to America" and "Beverly Hills Cop III." The conversation also explores Nile's first experiences with Hip Hop alongside Blondie's Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, growing up in Alphabet City, and his early access to musical education. He also touches on his experiences working with legends like Sister Sledge, Diana Ross on "I'm Coming Out," and Carly Simon on "Why," as well as the story of almost working with Aretha Franklin. Finally, Nile closes on his enduring passion for making music better for others and his commitment to philanthropy through the We Are Family Foundation.➡️ Follow Nile on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nilerodgers➡️ Hear some of Nile’s work - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DZ06evO24hDkk?si=aGNcI_SnRa6eP586ADWF4A➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers - https://audiomovers.com/?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=Content&utm_campaign=UNSUNG_Nile_RodgersTimecode0:00 - 0:34 Intro0:38 - 4:56 Working with Duran Duran and the Story of “The Reflex”4:56 - 6:28 Dealing with Pushback from Record Labels6:28 - 7:57 Staying in Touch with Artists While Moving from Project to Project7:57 - 10:36 The Bassline of “Good Times”10:36 - 11:20 How Working with Small Recording Budgets Made Nile So Efficient11:20 - 14:05 Digital Recording vs. Analog Recording14:05 - 15:25 Does Nile Prefer Recording Analog or Digital?15:25 - 22:27 Nile & Bernard’s First Record Deal22:27 - 23:38 The Impact of the “Disco Sucks” Movement23:38 - 23:53 How Nile Decides Whether He’ll Work with an Artist23:53 - 26:57 (Almost) Working with Aretha Franklin26:57 - 28:52 Wanting to Be a “Self-Contained Band”28:52 - 32:26 How to Get a Hit Record32:26 - 34:32 Working on Commercials to Pay the Rent and Meeting John Landis34:32 - 40:43 Working on “Coming to America” & “Beverly Hills Cop III”40:43 - 42:51 Eddie Murphy Story42:51 - 44:45 “Alphabet City” & the Beginnings of Hip Hop44:45 - 47:17 Nile’s First Experience of “Hip Hop” with Debbie Harry + Chris Stein47:17 - 52:36 Growing Up in Alphabet City + Nile’s Early Access to Musical Education52:36 - 55:44 Working with Sister Sledge55:44 - 58:00 Working on Diana Ross’ Album “Diana” (1980)58:00 - 1:04:00 The Story of “I’m Coming Out”1:04:00 - 1:04:40 Intermission1:04:40 - 1:12:34 The Story of “Why” by Carly Simon1:12:34 - 1:14:32 What Nile Cares About When Working on a Song1:14:52 - 1:15:26 EndUNSUNG is a podcast from Audiomovers. "K-Pop Isn't A Genre It's Their Culture, It's Everything" Production Duo LDN Noise | UNSUNG

For Episode 20 of the UNSUNG podcast, Jocelin and Matt were joined by British songwriting & production duo LDN Noise at Abbey Road Studios. Comprising Greg Bonnick and Hayden Chapman, the two met via a mutual friend, originally producing garage and UK electronic genres popular at the time. After digital downloads started to displace revenue generated from physical sales of vinyl and CDs, Greg's dance music label began to struggle financially. He pivoted out of making niche UK genres like Garage and 2-step and started studying songwriting and looking into producing more commercial music with Hayden. They had a string of early successes working on music for UK chart-toppers like Cheryl Cole, Sugababes, and Tinie Tempah, while also working on more underground acts/genres like Skepta and Grime. Then, around 2012, the UK music scene started to run thin on the ground; there weren't many acts to pitch songs for. The boys had landed a big track with Chris Brown that same year but struggled to get much music placed until their songwriter friend Andrew Jackson introduced them to a brand-new genre emerging from South Korea called K-pop. Returning from LA frustrated after a big writing trip, they decided to double down on this brand-new genre and quickly found success in K-pop, finding their broad musical taste and diverse musical ability a perfect fit for the multi-genre twists and turns found in K-pop's DNA. Today, LDN Noise has written songs and produced music for some of the biggest acts in K-pop and the world, including: Chris Brown, Nick Jonas, Red Velvet, Exo, NCT Dream, NCT 127, Skepta, Enhypen, Twice, and many, many more. In this episode, the boys discuss how they typically work together, how they met, their early productions, their transition into songwriting, and the commercial evolution of UK Rap in the 2010s, Grime's second wave, the highs and lows of various musical genres, the impact of diverse musical experiences, their success in K-pop, covering its defining features, the potential dark sides of the scene, and the importance of work ethic and talent in the music industry, how they initially got into K-pop, what inspires them when writing in the genre, how they developed the skillset to produce its many diverse styles, their preferred DAW, the different sound characteristics of DAWs, the plugins they regularly use. They wrap up with a quick-fire round, what's next for LDN Noise, and some invaluable advice for aspiring music makers.➡️ Follow LDN Noise on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ldnnoise➡️ Listen to some of LDN Noise's work - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Gb68yqL6OxyHECuQJJAhr?si=jmZmFSFYSPu2vUJWPfw-4Q➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers - https://audiomovers.com/?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=Content&utm_campaign=UNSUNG_LDN_NoiseUNSUNG is a weekly podcast from Audiomovers that honors the real stories and the truth behind the music that shapes our lives - by music obsessives, for music obsessives. Being Nominated for 2x GRAMMYs, Shaping the Future of Audio Plugins + More - Ryan Schwabe | UNSUNG

For Episode 15 of the UNSUNG podcast, ‪Mixed by Jocelin‬ and Matt Soczywko were joined by mixing & mastering engineer & founder of Schwabe Digital Ryan Schwabe at Kensaltown East studios in New York. As an engineer, Ryan Schwabe has been nominated for 2x GRAMMYs and worked on multiple Gold and Platinum selling records along the way. After Ryan released his first artist project, he received lots of praise on the mixing and mastering of the project and clients began approaching him to help them mix and master their own projects. While building studios and teaching as a professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, he continued mixing and mastering projects on the side, slowly building relationships with an eclectic network of clients across different genres. Some of those projects began getting acclaim, then in 2021 "Planet Mad" by Baauer that Ryan co-mixed was nominated for a GRAMMY. Ryan's second nomination came in 2023 for mixing and mastering "Adolescence" by BAYNK. While mixing "Planet Mad" for Baauer, he became frustrated with the lengthy 4-hour-long process of running specific stems through his hardware rack, printing them, then having to re-import them back into the project at the same level. He figured there had to be a quicker, more efficient workaround, and after some homework and a lot of back and forth with a developer, Schwabe Digital's first plugin was born. After receiving praise on Gold Clip from other engineers, Ryan decided to release it and launched Schwabe Digital in June 2023. In this episode, Ryan discusses building a client base independently, working across different genres as an engineer, being nominated at the GRAMMYs, Ryan’s musical journey: from his beginnings as an artist to building studios/teaching at Drexel University, to becoming a full-time engineer and founding Schwabe Digital. He also covers his approach to mastering, the development of Gold Clip and Schwabe Digital's next plugin, NAMM, and his encyclopedic knowledge of recording technology, OEK sound, Soothe 2, Highfall, delivery standards for streaming and Atmos, Ryan’s take on Atmos, why Ryan started making plugins, his approach to running Schwabe Digital, building and developing Orange clip, what Gold Clip actually is, future plugins from Schwabe Digital, analyzing audio gear to inspire new plugin ideas, Ryan’s goals, mixing with your eyes vs. your ears, casual vs. active listening and Isomorphic Mapping, and the beginner’s mindset.➡️ Follow Ryan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ryanschwabe_/ ➡️ Follow Schwabe Digital on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/schwabedigital/➡️ Hear some of Ryan’s work - https://www.ryanschwabe.com/➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers - https://audiomovers.com/?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=Content&utm_campaign=UNSUNG_Ryan_SchwabeUNSUNG is a podcast from Audiomovers.
