    Makayla Renee Settles was an 18-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina, whose story gained national attention following allegations of a brutal sexual assault and her subsequent death. Birth Date: February 20, 2007. Hometown: Raleigh, North Carolina. She had recently graduated high school and planned to attend Moorpark College in California. Timeline of Events July 2025: Makayla moved to Moorpark to start a new life with her father. July 21, 2025: Two days after her arrival, she allegedly fled her father's home in distress. She was taken to Simi Valley Hospital, where a forensic exam reportedly confirmed a sexual assault and matched her father's DNA. July 2025: Stephen Vincent Chavez, 41, was arrested and charged with felony incest, taking advantage of a position of trust, and providing alcohol to a minor. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $250,000 bail. December 22, 2025: Makayla died by suicide in North Carolina. Her family attributed her death to the profound trauma of the assault. this is a Ongoing Legal Case I will keep you guys updated on things on this case as they become available. The case, prosecuted by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, faced complications following Makayla's death because she could no longer testify in person. Her family and advocates launched a "Justice for Makayla" campaign to ensure the physical evidence, including the DNA and her prior recorded statements, would be used to proceed to trial.
