    Leaders Worth Following

    What does it truly mean to lead in a way that points others toward Jesus? In this message drawn from Titus chapter 1, we explore a portrait of godly leadership that challenges every one of us, not just those who hold a title or fill a role. Paul writes to Titus with a clear mission: appoint trustworthy men to lead the churches in Crete. But the qualities he lists go far beyond professional credentials or public reputation. He points us to the home, to the marriage, to the way a man handles his temper and his money and his appetites, because character lived out in private is the truest measure of a person. The central insight here is both convicting and liberating: godly leadership is not about position, it is about formation. It is about becoming, day by day, someone whose life makes it easier for the people around them to see what Jesus looks like. As we sit with this passage together, we are invited to stop evaluating others from a distance and instead hold up the mirror to our own hearts. Where is our faith most visible? Where does it go quiet? These are the questions that move us forward on the journey of becoming more like Christ.

    Why Church Health Matters

    What does it take to build something that truly lasts? That question sits at the heart of this opening message in a journey through the book of Titus. Drawing on the familiar image of two builders from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we are challenged to think beyond personal faith and consider the health of the church as a whole. The foundation beneath a structure matters far more than what is visible above ground, and the same is true for a community of believers. A church built on personalities, preferences, or temporary momentum will not withstand the storms that inevitably come. But a church anchored in the truth of God's word, where that truth visibly transforms the lives of its people, is built to last. Titus chapter 1 opens with Paul identifying himself as both a servant under God's authority and an apostle sent on God's mission, a combination of humility and calling that sets the tone for everything that follows. The church, we are reminded, does not belong to any leader or long-tenured member. It belongs to God. That single truth reshapes how we engage with everything from leadership decisions to personal discipleship. When we stop asking what we want from the church and start asking what God desires for his church, something shifts. We begin to see that gospel truth is never meant to simply fill our minds. It is meant to form our lives.

    Kingdom Response

    What does it actually mean to build a life on solid ground? As we arrive at the closing passage of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 7:24-29, we find ourselves standing at a moment of decision. Jesus draws the greatest sermon ever preached to a close not with a summary, but with a question directed straight at every one of us: now that you have heard my words, what are you going to do with them? The parable of the two builders is not a story about two different kinds of people, one good and one bad. Both builders heard the same teaching. Both received the same invitation. The only difference was what they did with what they heard. This forces us to confront one of the most subtle dangers in the life of faith, not outright rejection of Jesus, but a comfortable familiarity with him that never moves us to action. We can know the stories, the verses, the songs, and the right moments to say amen, all while Jesus quietly asks whether we are truly following him. The deepest work of discipleship almost always happens in the unseen moments, the quiet prayer before the day begins, the temptation resisted in private, the choice of forgiveness over bitterness. These ordinary decisions, stacked one on top of another over years, become something extraordinary. They become a foundation. And when the storms arrive, because Jesus says they will, that foundation is the only thing that determines whether we are left standing.

    What if the most important question we could ever answer is not what we have done for Jesus, but whether we truly belong to him? In Matthew 7, we find ourselves at a turning point in the Sermon on the Mount, where the tone shifts from teaching to a direct call for decision. Jesus presents us with two roads, two gates, and two very different destinations. The wide road is crowded and comfortable, but its popularity is not proof of its safety. The narrow road demands surrender, but it leads to life. This is not a message we can simply admire from a distance. Jesus uses the word 'enter' deliberately, reminding us that following him is not a passive experience but a deliberate crossing of a threshold. We are invited to examine whether our lives are actually moving in the direction he has described, or whether we have settled for a version of faith that keeps us in control.

    We all know the sting of being misunderstood—when someone assumes our motives, judges us by a single moment, or writes our story from one page. Yet how quickly we turn around and do the same to others. This powerful exploration of Matthew 7:1-12 confronts our tendency to sit in a seat that belongs only to God—the judge's chair. Jesus isn't asking us to abandon discernment, but to recognize the difference between wise evaluation and playing God with people's hearts. The vivid image of trying to perform delicate eye surgery with a two-by-twelve plank sticking out of our own face would be comical if it weren't so painfully accurate. We extend endless grace to ourselves while demanding perfection from everyone around us. The transformative truth here is that grace and humility must begin with the mirror before the microscope. Jesus, the only one who ever had the right to condemn, took off His judge's robe and stood beside us in the courtroom, taking our sentence upon Himself. When we truly grasp what He's done for us, climbing back into that judge's seat becomes unthinkable. The golden rule isn't just about being nice—it's about reflecting the heart of a King who fed the hungry, healed the hurting, restored the ashamed, and forgave even those nailing Him to a cross.

    This teaching from Matthew 6:19-34 confronts us with one of life's most challenging questions: where does our ultimate allegiance lie? Through the vivid imagery of two ladders—one representing the world's demands and another representing God's call—we're invited to examine the dangerous practice of spiritual straddling. Jesus doesn't mince words here: we cannot serve two masters. The treasures we accumulate on earth, whether material possessions, career achievements, or even good things like our children's activities, can subtly become idols that distance us from God. What makes this message particularly compelling is its emphasis on the only treasure we can take to heaven: people. Our job, as followers of Christ, is to make heaven crowded by investing in relationships and sharing the gospel. Jesus reminds us that if God cares for the birds and flowers, how much more does He care for us? This isn't a call to irresponsibility, but rather an invitation to trust—to stop letting worry about tomorrow rob us of today's peace. The heart-piercing question echoes throughout: do we trust Him? Each of us must answer that question individually, and our answer will determine which ladder we're truly climbing.

    In Matthew chapter 6, we encounter a profound question that cuts to the heart of our spiritual lives: Who are we really living for? This passage challenges us to examine the deepest motivations behind our religious practices—our giving, our praying, our fasting. The issue isn't whether we do these things, but why we do them. Are we performing for an audience of people, seeking their approval and recognition, or are we living in genuine relationship with our Father? The truth is, every human heart longs to be seen, to matter, to be loved. This isn't sinful—God designed us for relationship. But we often look to people for something only God can ultimately provide. Jesus exposes how we can turn even our most righteous acts into performances, seeking human applause that fades as quickly as cold french fries. The revolutionary invitation Jesus offers is this: we don't have to earn our Father's attention because we already have it. Through Christ, we're not servants trying to impress a distant deity—we're children welcomed into the family. When we pray 'Our Father,' we're not informing God of our needs; He already knows. Prayer becomes less about performance and more about enjoying His presence. This changes everything about how we approach our spiritual lives.

    This exploration of the Sermon on the Mount challenges us to reach a crucial verdict: will we live under the authority of Jesus' teaching? Drawing from Matthew 5, we discover why Jesus' words left crowds amazed - he spoke with an authority that transcended the religious leaders of his day. Six times Jesus declared, 'You have heard it was said, but I tell you,' elevating standards on marriage, truth-telling, retaliation, and love. The message confronts us with the reality that God's Word is inspired, inerrant, and infallible - it's God-breathed and demands our obedience. Like Copernicus proved the sun is at the center of our solar system, we must recognize that Jesus, not ourselves, is at the center of all life. The practical applications are profound: we're called to honor marriage's sacred bond, speak truth without manipulation, surrender our rights rather than seek revenge, and love even our enemies. This isn't about legalism but about transformation through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. We cannot live this way in our own strength - we need to be filled with the Spirit, not running on empty. The question remains: are we building our lives on the rock of obedience, or are we like sheep getting stuck in the same patterns because we hear God's Word but fail to put it into practice?
