Grief: Life Changing News - Job Loss, Medical Diagnosis & Relationship reality

Send us Fan Mail Grief doesn’t only show up when someone dies. It also shows up in those gut-punch, “everything just changed” moments of life-changing news. Some may call them “Sliding Door” moments - when your reality shifts with little to no warning and you know your life, from this moment forward - will never be the same. In Part 2 of the Grief Series on Life Coaches Unfiltered, Desiree, Doree, and Michelle explore the grief that comes with sudden change: a serious medical diagnosis, a job loss or layoff, or the moment you realize a relationship or marriage has to end. This episode is for anyone navigating life-changing news about health, career, or relationships. It will also be useful for those supporting loved ones through those seasons. You’ll hear: What “kairos moments” or sliding-door moments are, and why they can feel like emotional whiplashReal stories of receiving shocking news about health, work, and relationshipsHow grief after life-changing news can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, especially when the situation isn’t final yetWhy many people barrel through these seasons with grit and resilience, missing the grief piece entirelyPractical ways to name, validate, and work with this kind of grief instead of just “powering through”Why these moments often send us into autopilot, denial, or “everything’s fine” mode even as grief is simmering underneathHow grief after change is different from grief after a death: mixed feelings, hot–cold emotions, hope and fear existing at the same time, decisions that must be made over and over again (like divorce or job changes)Real-life examples:A parent’s Cancer diagnosis and the role shift that followsDivorce news that permanently changes trust and the shape of a familyLayoffs and job eliminations that challenge identity, security, and self-worthChildhood moments when a beloved stepparent or caregiver suddenly disappears from daily lifeKey insights and tools: Grief is present anytime your sense of “how life was” shatters, even if no one has diedWhy it’s common to ask, “Why me?” and cycle between anger, disbelief, and empowerment after job loss or relationship endingsHow to recognize grief in your own story: exhaustion, shock, confusion, feeling like the rug has been pulled out from under youPermission to see growth and gifts later, without minimizing how painful the present feels (“I don’t understand why this is happening, but I look forward to the day in which I do”)Gentle practices for navigating these seasons: naming the loss, allowing mixed emotions, seeking support, and watching for signs you’re ignoring your grief in the name of resilienceQuestions we tackle in this episode:   “Why am I so emotional after losing my job?”“I just realized that my life is changed forever. Why am I so sad?”“Why am I so blindsided that my relationship is over?”“What is a kairos or sliding door moment?”“Why do I feel grief after a diagnosis, even if my loved one is still alive?”“How is grief after divorce or breakup different from grief after death?”“What are ‘turning point’ or sliding door moments, and how do they relate to grief?”Resources/Links:  Stop Apologizing! : The Apology EpidemicToxic positivity: When “Good Vibes Only” Goes badDo Happy People Piss You Off? Grief: Losing a Loved One

Send us Fan Mail Grief after the death of someone you love can feel surreal, disorienting, and completely overwhelming. All of those things make sense when you realize that it takes time for your brain to catch up to the reality that they are really gone. In this first episode of a 3-part Grief Series on Life Coaches Unfiltered, Desiree, Doree, and Michelle share honest stories about losing loved ones, and unpack why grief feels so “weird” and out of control in the early days.  You’ll hear: Why grief after a death is a universal human experience (and not something to be ashamed of)How sudden loss, anticipated loss, and “complicated” relationships can shape the way we grieveWhy the famous “stages of grief” were never meant as a strict rulebook for the people left behindWhat acute grief can look like: vivid dreams, shock, numbness, emotional wavesWhy you’re not going crazy, even if it feels that wayPractical ideas for coping in the first weeks and months, including sleep, boundaries, and simple grounding practicesIf you have a family member who is close to transitioning or if you’re navigating the death of a loved one, you’ll find useful information in this episode.  Even if you’re supporting friends and family and want to show up with empathy instead of clichés,  you’ll find guidance in this episode. Follow the show so you don’t miss Parts 2 and 3 of the Grief Series, where the coaches explore other forms of loss and how grief shows up beyond death. Key ideas and tools discussed: Grief is complicated and individualized; there is no “right way” to do itHow relationship dynamics (close, distant, conflicted, or “complicated”) shape the grief processThe importance of sleep for emotional regulation and why lack of sleep can intensify grief distressSimple grounding strategies: repeating prayers or mantras, using meditative beads, staying present, and giving yourself permission to take breaks from heavy conversationsHow to respond when someone shares grief from a loss that happened years or decades ago. Empathy matters more than timelinesQuestions we help answer: “What does grief look like after losing a loved one?”“How do I recover from the loss of a loved one?”“Are the stages of grief real, and do I have to follow them?”“Why does my grief feel worse in the morning or after vivid dreams?”“How do I support someone whose grief seems complicated or ‘stuck’?”🔗Links & resources: Connect with Desiree Doucet Desiree’s Website Desiree’s Facebook Page Follow Desiree on Instagram Desiree’s LinkedIn Page Documentary: "A butterfly has been released" (mentioned in the show) Desiree, compassionate Grief Mentor & Coach.
