The Church as a Transforming Community

Everyone is being formed. But what are we being formed into? And what is shaping us? Every church develops a culture—a shared way of thinking, loving, and living. How can our life together intentionally form us into the image of Christ? Jesus says, “My Father is the gardener.” The Father is actively tending us toward fruitfulness, even pruning branches that already bear fruit. The life He cultivates grows through our connection to Jesus, his words, and one another. But what about us? How do we participate in that growth? What if our friendships could help us become more fruitful participants in what Jesus is doing in the world?

How Do We Fit Into God’s Plan? (God’s Grand Plan Before Time Began Part 2)

What if the church was never an afterthought in God’s plan? In Ephesians 1:3–14, Paul bursts into praise for what God purposed in Christ before the world began. As we listen, we hear echoes of Israel’s Exodus: a people called God’s children, redeemed through blood, and promised an inheritance. But Paul says the story reaches further than anyone expected. Gentiles, too, are welcomed as children and fellow heirs—and God’s purpose extends to all things in heaven and on earth. This Sunday we’ll ask what that means for who we are and how we live together. If you’d like to read ahead, start with Ephesians 1:3–14. Then read Ephesians 2–3 to see Paul unfold the mystery.

What Was God Planning Before the World Began? (God's Grand Plan Part 1)

What was God planning before the creation of the world? Ephesians answers on the largest possible scale: God intends to bring everything in heaven and on earth together under Christ. But this is not merely an abstract plan for the distant future. It is already taking visible form in a people—one new family through adoption, one new temple inhabited by the Spirit, and one new humanity shaped by Jesus. This Sunday in worship we begin our new series, God’s Grand Plan Before Time Began: The Glorious Vision of Ephesians. Our primary text will be Ephesians 1:1–10, but we will survey the entire letter. If you have time, read all six chapters in one sitting—and come ready to see the world through a different story.

Living Forgiveness Within the Church (Cultivating Forgiveness Part 6)

Over the course of the last 5 weeks in this Cultivating Forgiveness series, we’ve learned together what forgiveness is and, importantly, what it is not, and how it is all defined by the cross of Christ; we’ve learned how grace received becomes grace extended: a river, not a lake; how forgiving people are produced through discipleship, and how forgiveness leads to our ability to extend healing to others in the same way Christ is healing us. Today, we’ll study together what forgiveness looks like within this community of the local church.

Where Forgiveness Leads (Cultivating Forgiveness Part 5)

The pain you experienced does not have to determine what you give the world. In Where Forgiveness Leads, Cultivating Forgiveness Part 5, Ryan Carver explores what happens when bitterness is brought into the light, vengeance is released, and our wounds are entrusted to Jesus. Through Ephesians 5:8 to 17, we see that forgiveness is not pretending the wound did not matter. It is refusing to allow the pain we received to keep spreading through us. As Jesus reveals and heals what remains within us, we become people through whom he brings healing. This sermon explores: 🔦 How to recognize hidden unforgiveness 🙏 Why confession leads toward renewal 🌱 How the Holy Spirit transforms our responses 🤝 The difference between forgiveness, reconciliation, and restored trust 🛡️ Why forgiveness can coexist with wise boundaries 🌎 How living forgiven makes the character of Jesus visible Forgiveness may begin with a decisive moment, but it often becomes a repeated practice. You may not resolve everything today, but you can take one faithful step into the light. Following in the Way of Forgiveness (Cultivating Forgiveness Part 4)

Jesus tells His disciples to forgive even when someone sins against them repeatedly. Their immediate response is understandable: “Increase our faith!” But what if forgiving well doesn’t require some extraordinary kind of faith available only to spiritual giants? What if it requires discipleship—a life in which we are formed over time to obey Jesus? This Sunday as we explore Luke 17:1-10 and Matthew 28:18-20 we’ll look at how baptism, worship, prayer, communion, and the examples of other Christians can cultivate habits of forgiveness and unlearn habits of bitterness, vengeance, and retaliation. We cannot prepare for every conflict or tragedy. But we can be formed into a people prepared to face them as followers of Jesus.Join us in worship and in the journey of becoming a forgiving people.

Forgiveness Extended and Awaiting (Cultivating Forgiveness - Part 3)

Many Christians know they are called to forgive, but struggle with questions like: Do I have to forgive someone who isn't sorry? Is forgiveness the same as reconciliation? Why doesn't the relationship automatically heal after I forgive? This Sunday we'll explore one of the most practical—and often misunderstood—aspects of biblical forgiveness. Looking at Ephesians 4:31-32 and 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, we'll discover that God's forgiveness is both fully extended and yet awaits our response. That pattern becomes the model for our own forgiveness of others. Along the way, we'll distinguish forgiveness from reconciliation and consider what it looks like to extend grace while entrusting judgment to God. If you've ever wrestled with forgiveness, I trust you will find this helpful. Join us in worship Sunday morning at 10:00.

The Greatest Gift the Church Can Give the World (Cultivating Forgiveness - Part 2)

Just two days after the horrific Charleston church shooting (2015), grieving family members stood before their loved ones’ murderer and spoke words of forgiveness. They did not deny their pain. They did not deny his evil. But they offered forgiveness. They gave the world a gift that day.We live in a world that knows how to expose evil and punish evil – but often has no idea what to do after that. What if one of the greatest gifts the Church can offer the world is a model of forgiveness? Not the kind that ignores evil or pretends it never happened, but the kind that is learned at the Cross.Join us this Sunday as we continue our Cultivating Forgiveness series and discover how the Cross teaches us what forgiveness really looks like.
