Ryan and Leslie

Quote Mining is the podcast where Leslie and Ryan take a familiar saying and dig beneath the surface. In bite-sized conversations, they explore where quotes come from, what they really mean, and how they quietly shape the way we think, lead, and connect.

The Job of a Drummer Is to Be the Heartbeat. You Can't Fake That.

“The job of a drummer is to be the heartbeat. You can't fake that.” Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s quote sounds like it’s about music, but it quickly becomes a question about character. Most people notice the singer or the lead guitarist, yet the whole song depends on the person keeping time in the background. So what happens when the people everything depends on are the ones nobody sees? And if rhythm eventually reveals the truth, what does our consistency say about who we really are? In this episode of Quote Mining, Ryan and Leslie explore authenticity, responsibility, invisible work, leadership, and influence. They talk about the IT folks and janitorial staff who only get noticed when something goes wrong, the two-person IT team that doomed Jurassic Park, whether talent or consistency is harder to fake, and why “fake it till you make it” only works if you’re learning along the way. They also discuss why “heartbeat” fits better than “backbone” or “foundation,” how pressure reveals character, not bringing a bad day home to your family, appropriate transparency, influence without being the loudest voice in the room, and Fred Armisen’s idea of the rhythm of comedy. Along the way, they consider a deeper question: can you lead without being the most visible person in the room, or is the quiet, steady pulse sometimes the most powerful influence of all? Because maybe recognition comes and goes, but dependable rhythm builds trust. And maybe the better question isn’t “Am I being noticed?” but “What heartbeat am I providing, and who is counting on it?” Special thanks to Magic Sam, Blue Man Group Drummer of the Year, for creating our new intro song.
