The Stage Door: The Drowning Girls

There’s something haunting heading to the New Plymouth stage... This week on The Stage Door, thanks to BSeen Media, Tracey sits down with director Sharren Read to talk about The Drowning Girls, opening soon at New Plymouth Repertory. Joining the kōrero are cast members Jacqui Penn, Shae Trowson and Maddy Klever, who take us behind the story of this powerful play inspired by the shocking real-life crimes of George Joseph Smith, whose three wives died in remarkably similar circumstances between 1912 and 1914. What drew Sharren to this extraordinary piece? How do you bring the voices of three real women back to life on stage? And what has it been like for the cast to step into a story that is eerie, confronting — and based on events that actually happened?

The Stage Door: The Vagina Monologues: Why This Play Matters

Let's get one thing out of the way... it's about so much more than vaginas. This week on The Stage Door, Taryn Utiger joins director Tracey Blake and actors Sharren Read and Donna Yates for a conversation that's equal parts hilarious, heartfelt and unflinchingly honest. Together they explore why this groundbreaking play still matters and what happens when theatre dares to say the quiet parts out loud. From shame and sexuality to joy, violence, ageing, identity and everything in between, this is theatre that refuses to whisper. The Vagina Monologues comes to New Plymouth Little Theatre this August. Consider this your invitation to join the conversation.
