The J-Card Podcast

Alexei Shishkin

The J-Card Podcast is a weekly music show that asks guests to make a personal mixtape. Every episode, a guest walks host Alexei Shishkin through their mixtape. We talk about the songs, sure, but really we're talking about the person, what shaped them, what they're chasing, why a song from years ago still gets them every time, stuff like that. It's part music discovery, part oral history, part hangout show. Past guests have been musicians, comedians, photographers, label heads, booking agents, zine makers, radio DJs, lawyers who work in music, and plenty of people who don't fit neatly into any of those. The through line is always the same: they care enough about music to make a 6-track mixtape and sing its praises. New episodes drop on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. www.jcardpod.com

Jeremy Shatan has been writing about music at AnEarful since 2009, and he’s also the guy who shot the Paul’s Boutique cover (no big deal). His mixtape is six underappreciated debut albums of the 2020s, all from artists with fewer than 500 monthly listeners, so dig in and enjoy my conversation with Jeremy Shatan! Mark Whitby on 20 Years of Dandelion Radio and John Peel's Legacy | The J-Card Podcast

Mark Whitby is a DJ on Dandelion Radio and FSK Hamburg, and honestly, the guy is a walking music encyclopedia. Dandelion Radio started right after John Peel died (they literally named it after Peel’s own record label from the 70s), and Mark’s been behind the mic there for almost 20 years now. He also wrote a book on Peel’s Festive 50 chart, which turns 50 this year, and he actually mailed a copy to Peel himself just weeks before Peel passed away. Wild timing. We get into all of it: how Dandelion Radio got started, what it’s like carrying on the Festive 50 tradition, his punk awakening as a kid, a deep dive into blues, reggae, and the Madchester scene, and his other whole life as a football obsessive. He even wrote a book on women’s football and uses the proceeds to sponsor amateur players in the North West of England. It’s a long one, but a good one, with someone who’s spent his whole life chasing new music and just giving it away for free. Enjoy my conversation with Mark. Will Schwartz (The Male Pattern) Turns a Right-Wing Weirdo Into a Concept Album | The J-Card Podcast

Today’s guest is Will Schwartz. Will is a songwriter, novelist, and English professor, and he makes music as the male pattern. His new album, I Was Shot In The Heart!, is out September 25th, and a single off that album called “I’m a Soldier” is out now. Will and I went super in-depth on I Was Shot In The Heart! We talked about his approach to songwriting because as a novelist, obviously the writing part of the songwriting is super important. We talked about how he came up with this concept of a character-driven album, as well as the difference in mindset when it comes to writing a novel versus writing something smaller, like a song. And of course, we got into a mixtape full of outlaw country favorites! On today’s show, Rachel tells me about the origins of Rainbow Rodeo, the ups and downs of freelance music journalism over the last 15 years, and what it was like making the Country Pride show for SiriusXM. Cate Hukle (Kallai) on Turning a Bleak Year Into 'We Are Forever' | The J-Card Podcast

Cate Hukle makes darkgaze music in Portland, OR, under the name Kallai. Last year Cate released an album called We Are Forever, inspired by the aftermath of a tumultuous election and built around a mythic framework borrowed from a novel that gave the band its name. In our convo, we get into how that record came together and what the album’s title is actually referencing (hint: it has to do with a certain Vampire Slayer). Cate’s mixtape is broken up into three couplets of tunes, including two rare tracks harkening back to 90s Lawrence, Kansas. Arthur Alligood (phoneswithchords) on His Most Personal Album Yet | The J-Card Podcast

Arthur Alligood makes music as phoneswithchords, and his sixth full-length, High Up on the Wheel Well, is out now. This one’s a concept record built from childhood memories, which is a big concept to tackle, but we get into how that process actually worked. We also talked about how his mixer/mastering partner Nick Weber pushed him to slow down and take the longest he’s ever taken on a record. Arthur also talks candidly about learning production entirely on his own, how there are no right answers in art, and why a small handful of people who’ve bought everything he’s made means more to him than streaming numbers ever could. His mixtape features friend of the show Josaleigh Pollett, as well as a heap of other talented artists, and then we play a fun round of Play, Pause, Stop! About
