Episode 25: Food Guilt & the Shame Spiral (and How to Exit It)

Send us a text Food guilt doesn’t come out of nowhere. And it’s not a willpower problem. In this episode of Sick of Pricks, we’re talking about where food shame actually comes from, why it hits so hard (especially when you’re living with diabetes), and how guilt quietly turns into a shame spiral that keeps you stuck. If you’ve ever eaten something and immediately thought, “Why did I do that?” If food choices feel like a moral test instead of nourishment. If one “off-plan” moment turns into an all-day spiral. This episode is for you. We unpack how family expectations, diet culture, and medical messaging shape our relationship with food long before we realize it, and why shame never leads to consistency, peace, or better health. Most importantly, we talk about how to exit the shame spiral without punishment, restriction, or starting over. This is a shorter episode, but a heavy one. Take your time with it. In this episode, we talk about: Where food shame and guilt actually come fromHow family rules and early experiences shape our food beliefsThe difference between guilt and shame, and why it mattersWhat the shame spiral looks like in real lifeWhy food guilt feels heavier when you have diabetesWhy beating yourself up has never workedSimple, realistic ways to interrupt the spiral and move forwardYou are not broken. You are not weak. And you are not failing. You’re responding exactly the way you were taught to respond. And you can learn a different way. Episode 24: Is Your Treatment Plan Working for You (Or Just On Paper)?

Send us a text Your treatment plan might look great on paper. But what if it’s quietly exhausting you in real life? In this episode of Sick of Pricks, we're digging into a question many people with diabetes are afraid to ask out loud: Is my treatment plan actually supporting me, or am I just trying to keep up with something that doesn’t fit my life anymore? We talk about what a treatment plan is really meant to be, how it can slowly turn into pressure instead of support, and why struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing. You’ll hear about the emotional and mental load that often gets ignored in diabetes care, the subtle signs your plan might not be working anymore, and how burnout and avoidance are often signals, not shortcomings. This episode also walks through how to bring these concerns to your doctor without shame, defensiveness, or feeling like you need to apologize. Because advocating for yourself isn’t being difficult. It’s being honest. And your lived experience matters. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” but still running on fumes, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we talk about: What a treatment plan actually is and what it’s supposed to doThe difference between a plan that’s effective and one that’s livableSigns your treatment plan may not be working anymore, even if your numbers look okayWhy burnout, anxiety, and avoidance aren’t failuresHow to talk to your doctor about adjusting your plan in a collaborative wayReframing success so it supports your real life, not just your chartYou don’t need a perfect plan. You need one you can actually live with. *** 🫶🏻 Connect with Mary:  On Facebook On IG On TikTok Join The Sisterhood, Mary's wellness program for women here Find diabetes support for women here--> Sugar Mama Strong Diabetes Support Find diabetes support for men here--> Dudes with Diabetes Medical disclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is intended for general informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Episode 23: The Fear of Success (Yes! It'a a thing!)

Send us a text We talk a lot about fear of failure. But what about the fear of things actually going well? In this episode of Sick of Pricks, we’re digging into the quieter, sneakier fear that shows up right when things start working. The moment you gain momentum. The moment your numbers improve. The moment consistency starts to feel possible. That weird urge to pull back, slow down, or stop before you “jinx it”? Yeah. That’s not a lack of motivation. And it’s not laziness. It’s fear of success. We talk about why success can feel heavy instead of exciting, especially when you’re living with diabetes. How success can challenge your identity, trigger pressure, and make you feel like you have to maintain everything perfectly or not at all. We also talk about what it actually looks like to welcome success instead of flinching from it. Not with hype or toxic positivity, but with awareness, staying power, and a lot more self-trust. If you’ve ever noticed yourself pulling back right when things were clicking, this episode is for you. In this episode, we talk about: Why fear of success often looks like “being realistic”How diabetes adds pressure to wins and progressWhy starting over can feel safer than stayingIdentity shifts that come with consistency and changeWhat it really means to welcome success without demanding perfectionLetting things be good without pre-grieving the fallYou’re not broken for hesitating when things start working. You’re learning how to exist in a version of your life that doesn’t revolve around constant struggle. And that takes time. Episode 22: Celebrating Progress, Not Just Numbers-A Year-End Reality Check

Send us a text As the year wraps up, it’s really easy to look at your A1C, the scale, or your app data and feel like you didn’t do enough. I recorded this episode as a reminder that progress isn’t just measured in numbers, and that you’re not failing just because life got messy. In this episode, I talk honestly about why end-of-year reflection so often turns into self-criticism, especially when you’re managing diabetes. I share why numbers can be helpful tools without being the full story, and how so much real progress goes unseen when we only focus on metrics. I also dig into New Year’s resolutions without the “new year, new you” pressure. I’m a big believer in goal setting, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using January as a fresh start if that’s what gets you moving. The key is choosing goals that fit your real life, not your fantasy life, and learning how to build consistency without burning yourself out. If you’re feeling discouraged by your numbers, tempted to punish yourself in January, or worried you’re starting over yet again, this episode is for you. You’re not starting from zero...you’re starting from experience. In this episode, I talk about: Why December reflection can turn into harsh self-judgmentWhat health numbers do and don’t tell usHow to recognize progress beyond the scale or A1CA more realistic approach to New Year’s goalsWhy consistency matters more than intensityLetting January be a continuation, not a condemnationIf you’re heading into the new year craving clarity, compassion, and a more sustainable way forward, I hope this episode helps you reset without shame. Episode 21: Tech, Trackers & Data Overload-Finding Sanity with CGMs & Apps

Send us a text If you have ever stared at your CGM graph like it was a report card or felt personally attacked by a single spike, this episode is going to feel like a deep breath you didn’t know you needed. Today we are talking about the messy, emotional side of diabetes tech. CGMs, apps, trackers, all the data, and the pressure that comes with it. Because while the tools can help us understand our bodies, they can also push us into stress, shame, and perfection chasing if we are not careful. In this episode, I walk you through why the numbers feel so personal, how tech can accidentally take over your mental space, and what it looks like to create healthier boundaries with your devices. We talk about mindset shifts, notifications that need to go, and how to treat data like information instead of judgment. You will hear ways to use tech without letting it run your life, how to spot when the data is becoming too loud, and what it really looks like to bring intention, reality, and grace into your diabetes care. If you have ever spiraled over a graph, ignored your app because you were overwhelmed, or felt like you were performing for your device, this one is for you. What we cover in this episode: • Why CGMs and apps feel so personal • How data overload affects your mindset • The difference between information and judgment • How to set boundaries with tech • When to step back and when to tune in • Intention, reality, and grace in diabetes care • Why freedom should always be part of the equation Tune in and take a breath. You are more than your numbers. 🫶🏻 Connect with Mary:  On Facebook On IG On TikTok Join The Sisterhood, Mary's wellness program for women here Find diabetes support for women here--> Sugar Mama Strong Diabetes Support Find diabetes support for men here--> Dudes with Diabetes Medical disclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is intended for general informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Episode 19: The Doctor Didn't Listen. Now What?

Send us a text We’ve all been there. Sitting in a doctor’s office, trying to explain what’s really going on, only to walk out feeling unheard, unseen, or flat-out dismissed.  In this episode, we get real about one of the most frustrating parts of managing diabetes and chronic illness: when your provider doesn’t listen. We're breaking down what to do in that moment (without losing our cool), how to follow up afterward, and how to find a provider who actually respects our lived experience. Because being a “good patient” doesn’t mean being a quiet one. It means being an advocate for ourselves and our health. If you’ve ever left an appointment angry, confused, or doubting your own intuition, this episode will remind you: you are not the problem, and you are not alone. In This Episode, We’ll Talk About: The emotional impact of not being heard by your doctorWhy it happens more often than people realize — especially for women with diabetesWhat to say in the moment when you’re being brushed offHow to document and follow up after a dismissive appointmentFinding (and keeping) providers who actually listenRedefining what it means to be a “good patient”You can’t control how they show up in that exam room, but you can control how you advocate for yourself when they don’t. You are the expert on your body, and your voice belongs in every conversation about your care. Episode 18: When Motivation Is a Liar...What Actually Keeps You Moving

Send us a text We’ve all been told that motivation is the secret to success...but let’s be real, motivation is a liar. It shows up when things are shiny and new, then disappears the second life gets messy. In this episode, I'm calling out the myth of motivation and sharing what actually keeps you moving when you’re tired, busy, stressed, or just plain over it. Whether it’s sticking to your nutrition plan, getting in a workout, managing your blood sugar, or resetting your mindset, this episode is a reminder that you don’t need motivation to keep going…you need structure, systems, and self-respect. Because the truth is, motivation might light the match…but momentum keeps the fire burning. 🔥 🧩 What You’ll Learn in This Episode: Why motivation can’t be your foundation and what to build insteadHow to create structure that works even on your busiest daysThe “5-minute rule” that can turn dread into momentumHow to use mindset shifts to separate your feelings from your follow-throughThe difference between motivation and purpose in managing diabetesReal talk: how to show up for yourself when you don’t feel like it🩸 Key Takeaway: You don’t need to “feel motivated” to make progress.  You just need to take one small step forward — again and again — until momentum takes over. 🧠 Perfect For You If: You’ve ever thought “I just need to get motivated again” and you’re ready to stop waiting for the perfect mood and start showing up for the life you deserve. ❤️ Connect & Support: If this episode hit home, share it with a friend 👯 👉 Listen to more real-talk episodes of Sick of Pricks on your favorite podcast platform, and don’t forget to follow or subscribe.
