EP #232 Faith Based Recovery And Reentry In Fredericksburg

Recovery stories get told like a dramatic turnaround, but the part most people never see is the long middle: finding housing, keeping a job, rebuilding trust, and learning how to belong again. We’re joined by Brian Freeman from Konnect Ministries, a faith-driven recovery and reentry organization serving the Fredericksburg area across Spotsylvania and Caroline County. Brian shares how his own recovery shaped a program built on testimony, community, and the belief that people can change when they get the right support at the right time. We talk through what Konnect Ministries actually provides on the ground: peer support services, recovery housing, employment placement, life skills, and coaching that prepares someone for real life outside the system. Brian makes the case that addiction recovery cannot be reduced to brain chemistry alone, because many people are also carrying spiritual pain, identity loss, and deep disconnection. That’s why the rural church network and local relationships can be such a powerful force for healing, accountability, and hope. You’ll also hear practical, specific challenges and solutions, like transportation in rural Virginia, why “second chance employment” is often the turning point, and what Brian calls “attention training” for reentry. He breaks down how prison survival habits can sabotage interviews and relationships, and how small changes in presentation can open doors. We also dig into microbusiness ideas for people who cannot get hired easily, plus how Konnect Wholesale Furniture helps fund the mission. If you care about Fredericksburg recovery resources, reentry programs, transitional housing, and how faith-based recovery can work in a local community, this conversation is for you. EP #231 A Family’s Hard Season Turned Into A Community Kitchen That Feeds Anyone Hungry

A lot of people picture food insecurity as something that happens somewhere else. Then real life hits: a move, a job gap, a tuition bill, an unexpected expense, and suddenly the grocery budget becomes a weekly stress test. We’re joined by Deedre' Stinson from Hub of Hope, a Fredericksburg nonprofit founded to do one thing well: help people eat, with dignity. Deedre' shares how her own family’s hard stretch in 2012 pushed her to build a better option for neighbors who need more than a box of ingredients, especially when cooking isn’t realistic. We talk through Hub of Hope’s central kitchen model, where wholesome meals are prepared and delivered so families can simply heat them up at home. Deedre' explains why that “last mile” matters, what she learned from the painful experience of asking for help, and how respect and compassion have to be baked into any real hunger relief effort. If you care about local impact, food security, and practical community solutions in Fredericksburg, this conversation offers a clear window into what works and why. We also get into the engine behind the mission: Hope Heroes Southern Kitchen, a social enterprise restaurant that invites everyone to participate. When you buy a meal, you help fund a meal for someone else, plus there are catering options, meal prep for busy schedules, and a growing network of partners. Deedre' shares details on their upcoming golf tournament fundraiser at Pendleton Golf Course, including ways to play, sponsor, volunteer, or give online at hubofhopeusa.com. EP #230 Inside A Fredericksburg Event Company That Designs For Real Human Moments

A “pretty” event is easy to admire. A meaningful event is impossible to forget. I’m joined by Kathlynn Donald from Elevate Designs and Events, a Fredericksburg event planning and event design company built around one simple promise: helping people feel celebrated, seen, and heard. We talk about the real work behind a flawless celebration, from early design decisions and supplier sourcing to staffing, setup, teardown, and the cleanup nobody posts about. If you’ve ever wondered what you’re truly hiring when you bring in an event coordinator, this conversation makes it clear. Kathlynn also shares what sets her approach apart: designing for the guest experience, not just the photo. We get into the details that change the whole vibe of a room, like colors, textures, and interactive moments that help guests connect. One standout example is a fragrance bar that turns awkward small talk into instant conversation and community. It’s a smart reminder that experiential event planning is about people first, and decor second. You’ll also hear Kathlynn’s story, from growing up in a Haitian immigrant family where community celebrations were part of daily life, to learning high-level event production in a country club setting, to building a career across social work, childcare, retail, and wellness. We wrap with practical small business advice for anyone ready to turn a passion into a business: take the leap, stop waiting until you feel “ready,” and find support through local networking like chambers of commerce and Rotary. Elevate Designs and Events also welcomes micro events and intimate gatherings, with a no copy-and-paste philosophy that keeps your celebration true to you. EP #229 How Loisann's Hope House Helps Families Find Home

Family homelessness doesn’t always look like a tent or a street corner. Sometimes it looks like a parent rotating kids between friends’ houses, a week in a hotel, or a family trying to hold it together in the middle of a sudden housing crisis. We talk with Cait Woodward and Heather Cohen from Loisann's Hope House about what’s happening right here in Fredericksburg, VA and how their mission stays focused on one outcome: breaking the cycle of homelessness one family at a time. Hope House is known as the first and largest family homeless shelter in the Greater Fredericksburg region, but Cait and Heather explain why shelter is only one piece of the work. They walk us through how Hope House supports families before, during, and after a crisis, from homelessness prevention and rent assistance to emergency shelter and the hard, practical steps toward permanent housing and long-term stability. We also dig into the misconception that family homelessness “doesn’t happen here,” including what they see through the regional homelessness helpline, which receives around 16,000 calls a year and leaves roughly 70 families waiting for shelter on an average night. You’ll also hear how to show up for this work in ways that actually help. We spotlight two fundraising events: La Petite’s 45th anniversary wine dinner on September 23 with live and silent auctions, plus Battle of the Burgers on October 18 from 12 to 3 at Riverfront Park with downtown restaurants, friendly competition, and a family-friendly day that supports Hope House. If you can’t make it, we cover volunteering, skills-based projects, and high-need donation items like toiletries and cleaning supplies. EP #228 A Fabric Swap Turns Into Fredericksburg’s Next Creative Center

A fabric store closes and suddenly a whole part of local life goes quiet. That’s the moment Harmonie and Sebrina couldn’t ignore, and it’s how The Sewcial Haven was born: a Fredericksburg craft community built for people who want to sew, quilt, knit, crochet, upcycle, and actually make things together again. We talk through the real origin story, from casual meetups and open sew gatherings to monthly fabric swaps that packed the room with generous neighbors sharing fabric, machines, and know-how. The Sewcial Haven  isn’t only about supplies and pretty prints. It’s about building a safe, welcoming space where beginners can ask “How do I do this?” without getting judged, where mistakes are treated as information, and where one stitch at a time becomes confidence you can feel. Harmonie and Sebrina also connect creativity to mental health and resilience, sharing how sewing and quilting helped them through major life challenges and why that same outlet can help others dealing with stress, anxiety, or isolation. Then we look forward: their plan for an accessible creative center in the Fredericksburg area with classes, a place to try machines before buying, opportunities for local artists and teachers, and a community hub that invites everyone in. If you’ve been searching for sewing classes in Fredericksburg, a fabric swap, or a welcoming place to create, this conversation will give you hope and practical next steps. EP #227 What If Your Small Business Could Carry A Bigger Mission

A balloon arch can look effortless in photos, but the real magic is what happens behind the scenes: planning, problem-solving, and taking stress off a family or a business that just wants to celebrate. I’m joined by Stacy Moore-Aronoff, the owner of Moore’s Balloon Decor in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and she breaks down what 20 years in the event industry actually teaches you. We talk about scaling from working out of your home to running a large workshop, serving everything from small birthday parties to big corporate events, and why great balloon decor is really about helping people feel confident and cared for. Then the conversation shifts to the mission that fuels her work beyond celebrations. Stacy shares the story of the IBA7 Foundation, created after the loss of her son, Isaiah Aronoff, and how a simple promise to support his friends became a far-reaching nonprofit. We get into the real-life needs of college students during midterms and finals, why care packages can be a lifeline, and why the foundation intentionally awards scholarships to C student athletes who deserve a fresh start and practical help. If you care about education, student athletes, first-generation college success, or community-driven nonprofits, this part will stay with you. We also spotlight a standout fundraiser idea: a women-only spa day that turns giving into a true reset, plus concrete ways local businesses can sponsor, place an ad, or donate directly. You’ll leave with encouragement for your own entrepreneur journey, a clearer view of what it takes to run an event business, and a reminder that perseverance beats perfection. EP #226 The Best Mail Your Kid Will Ever Get

A monthly book in the mailbox sounds small until you realize what it changes: bedtime routines, vocabulary, confidence, and a child’s sense that stories belong to them. I’m joined by Beth DiDonato from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for Spotsylvania County, and we dig into how this free book program works, why it started, and why it has become such a powerful tool for early literacy and childhood development. Beth shares the origin story behind Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and the practical details parents actually need, including who qualifies (spoiler: it’s not income-based) and how to enroll by checking your zip code at imaginationlibrary.com. We also talk about what it took to launch the Spotsylvania affiliate in March 2020 during COVID, how it grew from 34 enrolled kids to more than 3,000, and why fast county growth makes sustained funding even more important since Dolly covers the books while local partners cover shipping. We end with the “why now” that hits hardest: Spotsylvania County’s 2025 kindergarten readiness literacy scores show a 44% passing rate. Beth makes the case that literacy is inclusion and that early access to books is one concrete step toward changing those outcomes. If you want to help, we cover donation options, plus the October 3 golf tournament fundraiser at Lake of the Woods and ways local businesses can sponsor. EP #225 How A Full-Service Kitchen And Bath Renovation Works

Your kitchen is the heart of the home, so why do so many remodels feel like chaos? We’re joined by Chris Romero from Kitchens For You to break down a calmer, more predictable way to renovate kitchens and bathrooms in Stafford and the Fredericksburg area: a true turnkey remodeling process that covers design, product selections, material supply, permits, inspections, and coordinated scheduling with licensed trades. We talk through what “turnkey” really means day to day. Chris explains how his team helps homeowners make key decisions before demolition starts, why a written scope and confirmed selections protect both timeline and budget, and how consistent updates keep trust high even when a project hits the normal rough phases. If you’ve been searching for kitchen remodeling or bathroom renovation advice, this conversation gives you a practical look at how the best design-build contractors reduce stress with process, not promises. Chris also shares his story from early construction work with his dad to trade school and building in the Army, and how that experience shaped the way he hires specialists and stands behind the finished product. We dig into what it’s like being a hometown business you can run into at the grocery store, why giving back matters, and how he thinks about common misconceptions people have about contractors and the remodeling industry. If you’re planning a remodel or just love seeing how great local businesses operate, listen now, then subscribe, share with a neighbor, and leave a review so more people can find the show.
