The EduCurious Podcast: An Interview with Julie Lavender Le Doux author of The Amazings Series

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fIO_DLpa96U How can storytelling help young readers explore their identities, navigate difficult experiences, question assumptions, and discover the courage to think independently? In this episode of The EduCurious Podcast, host Dr. Amber Love Johnson welcomes Julie Lavender Le Doux, author of The Amazings Series, musician, artist, speaker, and director of Dream Farm Radio. Together, they explore the powerful relationship between storytelling, childhood experiences, creativity, resilience, and the development of independent thinkers. Julie shares how her own experiences with fear, family relationships, and personal growth eventually became part of her creative journey as a children's author. She discusses writing as a way to explore difficult experiences, healing, and courage while creating stories that invite young readers to think deeply about themselves and the world around them. The conversation also explores Julie's experiences as a homeschooling parent and the importance of educational choice, individualized learning, and creating space for children's natural curiosity. At the center of the episode is The Amazings Series, a collection of illustrated adventures designed primarily for readers ages 10–14. Through a fictional family living in a world where wonder and color hold extraordinary meaning, Julie explores themes of courage, individuality, critical thinking, family relationships, identity, and growing up. For teachers, librarians, literacy educators, parents, and future educators, the conversation raises important questions about the books children encounter and how literature can create meaningful opportunities for reflection, discussion, empathy, and discovery. In this episode: • How childhood experiences can shape confidence and identity• The relationship between fear, resilience, and personal growth• How storytelling can help children explore difficult experiences• Why curiosity and wonder matter in education• Homeschooling, educational choice, and individualized learning• Creating memorable characters through writing and illustration• What educators and librarians should consider when selecting children's literature• Engaging reluctant readers through audiobooks, visual storytelling, and family discussion• The development of The Amazings Series and what may come next The Amazings Series: https://thequestforwonder.comAuthor Website: https://julielavender.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/julielavenderledoux/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/julielavenderledoux/ Hosted by Dr. Amber Love Johnson, The EduCurious Podcast highlights exceptional educators and explores the ideas, experiences, and challenges shaping teaching and learning. The EduCurious Podcast: An Interview with Randall Klein: Early Reading Specialist

What does it really take to teach a child to read? And how can educators make the most of the critical years when foundational literacy skills are developing? In this episode of The EduCurious Podcast, Dr. Amber Love Johnson welcomes Randall Klein, an early reading specialist and longtime educator with more than 40 years of experience helping children ages 3–7 become confident readers. Together, they explore the science of reading, foundational literacy development, and practical strategies educators and families can use to make early reading instruction engaging, effective, and developmentally appropriate. Randall explains how learning to read begins long before children successfully decode printed words. Phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, sound-symbol relationships, and intentional practice all play important roles in helping children move from spoken language to independent reading. The conversation also examines an important distinction: the science of reading is a body of research that informs instruction, not a single instructional program. Can something as simple as a game of bingo help prepare a child to read? Randall demonstrates how purposeful games and hands-on activities can strengthen beginning-sound recognition, decoding, and independence while keeping young learners actively engaged. Dr. Johnson and Randall also discuss why effective teachers pay close attention to what children can actually do, not simply whether they are participating in an activity. Purposeful repetition, differentiation, early intervention, and careful observation can help educators identify foundational skill gaps before they become larger reading challenges. Drawing from her experience as a former kindergarten teacher and current college professor of children's literature, Dr. Johnson connects the conversation to teacher preparation and the realities of early childhood classrooms. One important question emerges: Are students simply participating in reading activities, or are they developing the foundational skills necessary to become independent readers? Topics explored include:📚 The science of reading and classroom instruction🔤 Phonemic awareness, phonics, and early decoding🎲 Learning through purposeful games and hands-on activities🌱 Differentiation, repetition, and skill mastery🔎 Recognizing early reading difficulties🤝 Family engagement and early intervention💻 Virtual and home-based reading instruction🍎 Advice for new and aspiring educators Whether you teach preschool, kindergarten, first grade, support struggling readers, prepare future teachers, or simply want to better understand how children learn to read, this conversation offers practical insight into the foundational years that can shape a child's future as a reader. The EduCurious Podcast with Vanessa Hernandez, Chief of Retail Delivery at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union

What happens when education, financial literacy, workforce development, and community partnership come together? In this episode of The EduCurious Podcast, Dr. Amber Love Johnson sits down with Vanessa Hernandez, Chief of Retail Delivery at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union, to explore the connections between education, financial literacy, leadership, and preparing the next generation for the workforce. MIDFLORIDA’s story has deep roots in education. Founded in 1954 as a teachers’ credit union, the organization has grown into a statewide financial institution while continuing to invest in schools, educators, employees, and the communities it serves. Vanessa shares how MIDFLORIDA approaches financial literacy for students and families, partners with schools and universities, and develops employees through training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement. She also takes us beyond the traditional image of banking to explore careers in technology, data analytics, fraud prevention, marketing, lending, facilities, business services, and more. The conversation turns toward the future as Vanessa and Dr. Johnson ask an important question: What skills will today’s students actually need for tomorrow’s workforce? As AI, technology, and automation continue to reshape industries, technical knowledge matters, but so do communication, interpersonal skills, adaptability, self-awareness, mentorship, and the ability to keep learning. Vanessa also shares a powerful leadership philosophy: develop people for where they want to go, not simply where they are today. For educators, leaders, parents, and anyone thinking about how we prepare young people for life beyond the classroom, this conversation offers a valuable reminder that education is a shared responsibility. Schools, businesses, universities, families, and communities all have something to contribute. Because sometimes the best educational conversations happen when we become curious about the people and organizations beyond the classroom. The EduCurious Podcast: An Interview with Dr. Aleli Vazquez from The Ron Clark Academy

When people talk about turning around struggling schools, the conversation usually begins with academics. Dr. Aleli Vazquez believes it should begin somewhere else. In this episode of The EduCurious Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Aleli Vazquez, Dean of Faculty at the Ron Clark Academy, to explore what it really takes to create lasting change in schools. From leading the successful turnaround of a Title I school to researching trauma-informed leadership, Dr. Vazquez shares practical wisdom grounded in both experience and heart. Together, we discuss why behavior is communication, how relationships transform school culture, what educational equity truly means, and why investing in teachers is just as important as investing in students. We also explore meaningful professional development, building trust with families, and creating school systems that continue to thrive long after a leader has moved on. One of my favorite moments in our conversation comes when Dr. Vazquez reminds us that sustainable change isn't built by fixing children. It's built by believing in them, supporting the adults who serve them, and creating schools where every person feels seen, valued, and capable of success. Whether you're a classroom teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, district leader, or someone who simply cares deeply about education, I think you'll walk away encouraged and inspired by this conversation. Thank you for listening and for being part of the EduCurious community. If you enjoyed this episode, please follow The EduCurious Podcast, share it with a colleague, and leave a rating or review.
