Europe’s Nuclear Renaissance Starts Now: Mike Crawforth, Rolls-Royce SMR

In this episode. Nuclear power is back on the agenda, but can Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) finally deliver a faster, more scalable and more affordable approach to new nuclear generation? In this episode of EIC Clearly, Stuart Broadley is joined by Mike Crawforth, Strategy and Business Development Manager at Rolls-Royce SMR, to explore how one of the UK’s most talked-about energy technologies is moving from concept to commercial reality.Mike discusses Rolls-Royce SMR’s rapid growth from a 50-person start-up to a business of more than 2,000 employees, the technology behind its 470MW reactors, and the significance of securing contracts for seven SMR units across the UK, the Czech Republic and Sweden. The conversation examines why governments are turning to SMRs, the importance of standardisation and supply chain development, and how the industry can avoid the delays and cost overruns that have historically challenged large nuclear projects. Stuart and Mike also explore the growing demand for reliable low-carbon power, the role of nuclear alongside renewables, the impact of AI and data centres on future electricity demand, and why delivering the first wave of SMR projects successfully could reshape the future of global nuclear energy. At the heart of the discussion is a simple question: can SMRs become the breakthrough technology that finally brings nuclear power into the era of repeatable, factory-built energy infrastructure? North Sea Upset & Middle East Reset: Robin Mills, Two Very Different Energy Crises

In this episode. Our host, Stuart Broadley, is joined by Robin Mills, CEO of Qamar Energy, for a conversation on energy security, geopolitics and the forces reshaping global oil, gas and power markets. Robin explores what recent developments mean for the future of the UK North Sea, the resilience of global energy supplies and the changing priorities of governments and energy companies around the world. The discussion begins with the UK North Sea following BP’s decision to exit the basin and the passing of Sir Ian Wood, one of the sector’s most influential figures. Robin examines whether the UK can still unlock investment from its mature offshore resources, contrasting its declining trajectory with more stable activity levels in Norway and exploring the relationship between domestic production, energy security, emission reduction, and investor confidence. The conversation then turns to the Middle East, where conflict and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz have exposed vulnerabilities in global energy supply chains. Robin looks at how Gulf countries are responding through new infrastructure, economic diversification and alternative export routes, while exploring the implications for major energy players including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, the US and China. Looking ahead to ADIPEC 2026, they discuss how energy security could reshape the global energy debate. With geopolitical disruption strengthening the case for both secure hydrocarbon supplies and alternative sources of energy, they explore whether the current crisis could simultaneously drive further investment in oil and gas while accelerating renewables, electrification and other low-carbon technologies. At the heart of the conversation is a broader question: what does energy security really mean in an increasingly unpredictable world? Resilience comes from preparing before the next crisis arrives — diversifying energy sources, infrastructure and supply routes while building an energy system capable of responding to disruption without losing sight of long-term economic and environmental goals. From Rolls-Royce SMRs, To Floral Energy’s Off-Grid Data Centre Power: Paul Stein CBE

In this episode. Our host, Stuart Broadley, is joined by Paul Stein CBE, CEO and Co-Founder of Floral Energy, for a wide-ranging conversation on the enormous energy challenge behind the AI revolution and what it could mean for the future of the UK economy. Drawing on a career spanning technology, defence, government and energy — including his time at Rolls-Royce, where he helped shape the company’s Small Modular Reactor programme — Paul explores how the rapid growth of AI and data centres is creating unprecedented demand for reliable, dispatchable power. The discussion examines why existing electricity grids may struggle to meet the pace and scale of data centre development, the role gas could play in bridging the gap before new nuclear capacity becomes available, and how technologies such as SMRs could ultimately help deliver the low-carbon power required by a rapidly expanding digital economy. Paul also explains how Floral Energy is developing modular power solutions for data centres, designed to meet immediate energy needs while providing a pathway towards nuclear and lower-carbon generation in the future. The conversation also looks beyond data centres to the wider challenge facing the UK: how can the country embrace AI, deliver net zero and rebuild its industrial base at the same time? Paul discusses regulation, planning, government procurement and the importance of creating stronger links between industry, government, academia and finance, while making the case for a more joined-up approach to energy, technology and industrial policy. At the heart of the conversation is a fundamental question: can the UK move quickly enough to capture the economic opportunities created by AI without compromising its long-term energy and climate ambitions? Paul argues that doing so will require policymakers to think about energy security, economic growth, reindustrialisation and decarbonisation as interconnected challenges — rather than treating each one in isolation. Carole also looks at Africa’s enormous potential, from its young and growing population to its vast reserves of oil, gas, minerals and critical materials, while highlighting the importance of stable institutions, predictable policies and investment. At the heart of the conversation is a broader question: how should the energy industry prepare for a future where geopolitical shocks are impossible to predict? Carole argues for a more long-term view of risk, resilience and investment — focusing less on predicting every crisis and more on building infrastructure, partnerships and businesses capable of weathering whatever comes next. What Is the EIC?  The Energy Industries Council (EIC) is one of the world’s largest energy trade associations. As a not-for-profit organisation, it supports more than 950 member companies involved in the global energy value chain. EIC operates internationally, with offices in London, Kuala Lumpur, Rio de Janeiro, Houston, Dubai, and soon, Berlin. It is energy agnostic, supporting all parts of the energy sector. From mature renewable onshore and offshore sectors like wind, solar and hydropower; to grid infrastructure and large nuclear; to hydrocarbon sectors like oil & gas, LNG, FPSO, decommissioning, upstream, midstream and downstream; to emerging low-carbon sectors like hydrogen, carbon capture, CCUS, energy storage, BESS, biofuels, SAF (sustainable aviation fuels), and geothermal. EIC provides a wide range of services, including access to global market intelligence, CAPEX and OPEX project data, consulting support, events, business development opportunities, and advocacy. It also facilitates connections with key decision-makers and policymakers in the energy sector worldwide.
