    Bach's Chaconne in D Minor – A Cathedral for a Violin

Bach's Chaconne is fifteen minutes of music built on four bars of harmony. It is the longest single movement he ever wrote for a solo instrument, and it never once leaves that ground. In the summer of 1720, Bach came back from a trip with Prince Leopold and learned that his wife, Maria Barbara, had died and been buried while he was away. No letter had reached him. Scholars still argue about whether the Chaconne was written before or after — but people keep reaching for that story, because this music sounds like a man alone in a room, building a cathedral out of grief until light breaks through the ceiling. Today we sit inside it. The heavy double-stopped chords the bow can't quite sustain. The variations gathering like clouds. The hush that turns out to be a doorway into D major, where the bass line keeps descending anyway — joy and sorrow on the same foundation. We also step aside for a minute to hear Busoni's piano transcription, which plays the voices a single violin could only imply. Then the complete Chaconne, unbroken. Violin performance by Ray Chen (courtesy of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum). Piano performance of the Busoni transcription by Peter Bradley-Fulgoni. Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann that if he'd conceived this piece, the excitement would have driven him out of his mind. Subscribe, and we'll keep finding music like it. Musical Meditations — one piece of classical music, gently explained, then played in full. For calm, for focus, for slow evenings.
