Osvaldo Golijov: Friendship, Memory, and the Music That Lives On

A deeply personal conversation unfolds around Ever Yours, the new album from composer Osvaldo Golijov featuring performances by Barry Shiffman, Nicholas Schwartz, and the Arethusa and Animato Quartets. Ever Yours was produced by Stephen Prutsman. At the heart of the album is the late violinist Geoff Nuttall of the St. Lawrence String Quartet. He was the friend, collaborator, artistic provocateur, and a defining musical force in Golijov’s life. The episode explores how friendship shapes art, how musical conversations continue after death, and how memory becomes embedded in sound itself. The discussion traces decades of creative history, beginning with the St. Lawrence Quartet’s early encounters with Golijov’s music at Tanglewood and continuing through works like Yiddishbbuk, K’vakarat, Tintype, and the title work Ever Yours. Along the way, stories emerge of Geoff Nuttall’s fearless musicianship, the emotional intensity of chamber music collaboration, and the way artists push one another toward deeper expression. Inspired by the letters of Vincent van Gogh, Haydn quartets, Elie Wiesel, Jewish liturgical traditions, and lifelong friendships, the album becomes less a collection of compositions and an extended meditation on love, grief, artistic lineage, and transcendence. The musicians reflect on recording together in Amsterdam, shaping performances collectively, and creating music that feels less “perfect” than profoundly alive. This episode is full of warmth, humor, stories of creative chaos, and moving reflections on the way music allows people — and friendships — to endure long after they are gone.

Melanie Ambler: Music, Medicine, and the Art of Listening

On this episode of the M3 Podcast, host Sarah Cahill speaks with cellist and Stanford medical student Melanie Ambler about her groundbreaking work at the intersection of music, medicine, and human connection. Melanie shares the story behind Musical Rounds, a deeply personal project in which she visits critically ill and terminally ill patients, listens to their stories, and creates spontaneous cello improvisations inspired by their memories, emotions, and lives. What began as parallel passions for music and science evolved into a powerful calling: using music as a form of comfort, reflection, and healing within hospital spaces. The conversation explores the emotional realities of sitting with patients at the end of life, the role of music as a non-pharmacological complement to medical care, and the growing field of music medicine. Melanie also discusses the differences between music medicine and music therapy, her hopes to expand Musical Rounds into a nonprofit organization, and the importance of teaching musicians how to safely and compassionately work in healthcare settings. Along the way, Sarah and Melanie reflect on grief, memory, improvisation, and the extraordinary power of listening. The episode also touches on Melanie’s family legacy as the granddaughter of legendary oral historian Vivian Perlis, whose work preserving the voices of great American composers continues to inspire Melanie’s own mission of archiving human stories through sound. This is a moving and deeply human conversation about art, compassion, mortality, and the moments of connection that make us feel less alone.
