    Creepshow (1982)

Turn on the flashlight, pull out the horror comics, and get ready to be creeped out!  Creepshow, the 1982 collaboration between George A. Romero and Stephen King is on the marquee for this episode of Midnight Cinema, so don't be scared of the Creep in the ticket booth, he's just there to provide top fright customer service!  Horror comics pushed the envelope in the 1950s, and the pages were filled with dark humor, gore and titillation.  Romero and King were two of the kids who were thrilled by stories from notorious publishers like E.C. Comics.    When these two masters of horror met, they kicked around the idea of a movie that would bring those comic panels to life, and Creepshow was born.  Join Art and Erik as they turn every page and encounter every evil plant, every bug, every vengeful ocean zombie, and every crate monster!  We discuss the amazing cast of legendary character actors and soon-to-be iconic stars:  Ted Danson, Ed Harris, Leslie Nielsen, Fritz Weaver, E.G. Marshall and more!  Tom Savini provided the creature effects and the gore!  Congrats to three new Midnight Cinema Popcorn Bucket Award Winners We discussed George A. Romero previously on the Dawn of the Dead episode. Hal Holbrook and Adrienne Barbeau both appeared on our legendary episode covering John Carpenter's The Fog. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

The First Cut Is The Creepiest Welcome to the Tilden Mortuary and Crematorium! When the Sheriff brings in a corpse after hours, you stay until you have a cause of death, no matter how many creepy sounds you hear or how many animated dead bodies start shuffling down the hallways.  This week Art and Erik pull out the scalpels and fire up the furnace as they conduct a forensic examination of Director Andre Øvredal's  The Autopsy of Jane Doe.  In this 2016 horror procedural, Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch play a father-and-son coroner team who get the job of autopsying a strange, unidentified female corpse. But in looking for the cause of her death, they find deeper and deeper secrets hidden in the body and in history itself.  The eerie morgue spaces, atmospheric lighting and creepy screenplay boost this film onto many lists of underseen horror gems.  Join us in the Midnight Cinema to experience this firsthand!  Congrats to Brian Cox on receiving a Midnight Cinema Popcorn Bucket Award. We raved about him once before on our episode breaking down Trick 'r Treat.  Check out our website: https://midnightcinemapod.com/ Subscribe to us on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, and please leave us a review! Drag Me To Hell (2009)

Button, Button, Who's Got the Button? Check your harvest cake for eyeballs, read your animal sacrifice manual closely, and whatever you do, make sure to approve all loan extensions for witches!  Join us in the Midnight Cinema this week as we unspool Sam Raimi's 2009 horror movie Drag Me To Hell. Released in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, audiences and critics were delighted to watch a young bank loan officer (Alison Lohman) get tormented and face eternal damnation! Art and Erik dig into this short, fast and surprisingly nasty supernatural curse story that blends practical effects, CGI and Raimi's signature style.  Moviegoers loved it, and critics ate it up in the early aughts, but does it still hold up today?  We'll take you through every shattered tooth, every killer handkerchief and every flooded grave!  Watch out for anvils!  And we have two new Popcorn Bucket Award winners to hang in the lobby!  Director Sam Raimi, we previously discussed him when we covered  The Evil Dead.  Actor Justin Long was praised once before in our episode on Jeepers Creepers!  Check out our website: https://midnightcinemapod.com/ Subscribe to us on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, and please leave us a review! Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)

No matter how good the cottage looks, don't eat the candy! Instead, grab a crossbow, load up your Gatling guns, and find a white witch to tag along with you to the Midnight Cinema!  Art and Erik are watching 2013's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.  Hansel & Gretel is one of the best-known tales of the Brothers Grimm, but did you know the rest of the story?  It seems Hansel and Gretel grew up to become supernatural bounty hunters, and the forests of the fairy tale have been updated into an R-rated comedy-action-horror hybrid landscape.   Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton play the feisty siblings, squaring off against a grand witch played by Famke Jannsen.  There are F-bombs, head explosions, brutal beatings and a lot of action choreography.  When Director Tommy Wirkola pitched the idea, the studios were instantly hooked and saw a string of sequels in the headlights.  But how did this updated Grimm story end up?  Join Art and Erik as they follow the breadcrumbs to the center of the Witch Forest.  Check out our website: https://midnightcinemapod.com/ Subscribe to us on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, and please leave us a review! Van Helsing (2004)

The Vatican has a top-secret mission for you, so grab the holy water, garlic, silver stakes, zip lines, circular saw blades, and machine gun crossbows because we're heading to Transylvania!  Art and Erik are joining the Pope's favorite monster hunter, Van Helsing, on an adventure that involves vampires, werewolves, zombies and Frankenstein's monster.   That's right, this 2004 action-adventure horror film was directed by Stephen Sommers after his massive hit with the Brendan Fraser-led The Mummy. After that success, Universal Studios threw open the monster vault as well as their checkbook, and the result was this mashup of James Bond, Universal Monsters, and swashbuckling adventure films.   Using CGI alongside practical sets and wirework, Sommers set out to make a blockbuster starring a young Hugh Jackman (entering his Wolverine era) and Kate Beckinsale, who was already beginning her own monster franchise, Underworld.   Van Helsing underperformed at the box office, and critics were underwhelmed. But we're firing up the projector in the Midnight Cinema to take another look at this curio.  Join us as we dive deep into the mysteries (there are so many mysteries!) of this unique take on the classic characters of Dracula and Frankenstein.  Congrats to two new Popcorn Bucket Award winners: Alun Armstrong and Silvia Colloca.  8GUBSLE55PT1TPLM

    Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009)

The movie James Corden never wanted you to see! The movie with a title so cheeky it's been changed over the years! It's the 2009 horror-comedy Lesbian Vampire Killers, in which two down-on-their-luck Londoners take a trip to the remote village of Cragwich and find themselves in the middle of a sapphic vampire apocalypse. James Corden and Mathew Horne were paired as the leads off the success of their popular BBC series Gavin and Stacy. The film attempted to put Hammer Horror, Edgar Wright-like visual flair, frat humor, and a bevy of babes in a blender and pour out a cult classic. Art and Erik hop in the VW bus and head for The Baron's Rest pub to investigate this forgotten campy oddity that promises a lot in its title. The Midnight Cinema this week will be populated by vengeful Vicars, Swedish coeds and ominous barkeeps. Oh, and vampire women of course. But does this film deliver on the comedy, or the horror, or the sexiness? Just how many lesbian vampires can one movie fit? Find out with us! The Lost Boys (1987)

Wear your garlic T-shirt, tune up your saxophone, fill your squirt gun with holy water and don't forget to call the Frog Brothers because we're heading to Santa Carla, the murder and vampire capital of the world!  Art and Erik are riding towards the bluff with Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric and the rest of the sexy bloodsuckers of The Lost Boys!   In 1987, Director Joel Schumacher created an iconic hit by combining The Goonies with Dracula. And on this episode of Midnight Cinema, we're hanging on as tight as we can to the railroad bridge to give you all the scoop on this legendary horror comedy.  We'll even throw a new segment (with a musical intro) at you, along with a few Lost Boys musical numbers.  Check out our website: https://midnightcinemapod.com/ Subscribe to us on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, and please leave us a review! Robocop (1987)

Listen to the podcast, or there will be trouble! Art and Erik are heading to dystopian Detroit for Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic Robocop. And the prime directives are to serve the listeners, go deep into the movie, and leave you laughing.  This 80s genre-defining sci-fi/action hybrid turned a slain officer into a corporate-owned crime-fighting weapon. And along the way, it features gnarly practical effects, pitch-black satire, and a surprisingly emotional core underneath all the ultraviolence. We're diving into the toxic waste, the boardroom backstabbing, and why ED-209 still can't handle stairs. Join us in the Midnight Cinema and stay out of Old Detroit after dark!
