MMIW Crisis: Kimberly Bearclaw Iron, Tiffany Reid, and Kaysera Stops Pretty Places

Episode 54: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, MMIW, is a silent crisis of disproportionate violence against Native populations in North America. Many Indigenous women experience violence, abduction, and murder that often goes underreported or ignored by authorities and media, with systemic issues like misclassification, lack of data, and jurisdictional complexities hindering investigations. According to Indianlaw.org, in the United States, violence against indigenous women has reached unprecedented levels on tribal lands and in Alaska Native villages. More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced violence, and more than 1 in 2 have experienced sexual violence. Today we are going to explore more alarming statistics and share the cases of 3 missing and murdered Native American women. The West Mesa Serial Killer

Episode 50: On February 2, 2009, a resident walking her dog found a human femur bone on the West Mesa, a desert area then slated for residential development in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Subsequent excavations revealed the largest crime scene in the city's history. Authorities identified 11 females and one fetus. Most of the victims had disappeared between 2003 and 2005, were Hispanic, and were known to be involved in drug use or sex work. While the exact cause of death was difficult to determine due to the skeletal state of the remains, investigators suspect strangulation, as there was no evidence of gunshot wounds or blunt force trauma. The "Bone Collector" was coined by the media and police due to the organized, shallow burials in the desert. The gang ambushed the girls, subjected them to over an hour of physical torture and gang rape, and eventually strangled them to death using a belt and shoelaces.
