Episode 05 - The Atrium II: Must We Burn the Painting?

When someone whose work you love turns out to have done real harm, can you still love the work? And should you? Simone de Beauvoir asked a version of this about Sade in the 1950s. This episode takes her question into the Atrium, the hall of doors in my app Liminal, and lets the voices answer. Four minds take it on in the Symposium: Nietzsche, Beauvoir, Jung and Kafka. In Two Voices, Nietzsche and Beauvoir answer each other, not me. Then a room that's new to the show, the Tribunal: the app draws four minds at random, two argue for keeping the work and two against, and I deliver the verdict myself. And Hafez opens his Divan for a fāl. "Not separating the art from the artist, but holding both, and letting it cost me something." Every word the voices speak was generated live in Liminal on an iPad, trimmed for time and never rewritten. The voices are reconstructions, not the real people, and each one has been given its own voice.
