SBA 566: Integrating Audio Visual Systems into BAS

Your building automation system may be missing valuable information that already exists elsewhere in the building. What happens when your BAS and audio visual (AV) systems operate independently, even though both are designed to support the same spaces? Conference rooms experience unnecessary heating and cooling, occupancy data goes unused, and facility teams are left troubleshooting comfort complaints that could have been avoided. In Episode 566 of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, we explore the opportunities and challenges of integrating AV systems with building automation systems. For BAS professionals, understanding how these systems interact can open new possibilities for improving occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and building performance. But successful integration involves more than connecting devices and exchanging data. Topics Covered How AV systems can provide valuable occupancy and scheduling information to your BAS Integration options and communication methods between AV and building automation systems Network architecture, cybersecurity, and coordination challenges across AV and BAS environments Common integration failures that can impact system reliability and occupant experience Why commissioning, documentation, and clearly defined responsibilities matter for long-term integration success Are you overlooking valuable building data because your AV and BAS systems aren't communicating? Listen in to discover what these integration opportunities could mean for your next project.

SBA 565: Proper Labor Estimation for Sales

A building automation project can look profitable when it is sold and tell a very different story when it closes out. Often, the problem is labor. Hardware costs are relatively straightforward to quote. Labor requires judgment. If that judgment misses part of the work, overlooks site conditions, or relies on assumptions that no longer match reality, those missing hours can quickly consume project margin. In Episode 565 of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, you'll explore how to approach labor estimation so the number reflects the work your team will actually perform. If you estimate, sell, manage, or execute building automation projects, this episode will help you think differently about what should happen before a proposal goes out the door and what your completed projects can teach you about the next estimate. Topics Covered • Why building automation labor estimates can drift so far from actual hours • The phases of controls work that need to be considered during estimating • Where overlooked and uncertain labor can put project margin at risk • How sales and operations can align before a project is booked • Why completed job data should influence future estimates A defensible labor estimate is not about adding more hours. It is about selling the work at a number your operations team can trust and your project can deliver.

SBA 564: What a PID Loop is Really Doing

When a PID loop starts hunting, a valve keeps swinging, or a space refuses to settle at setpoint, changing tuning values can feel like the obvious next move. But what if the PID loop is not actually the problem? In Episode 564 of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, you'll get a practical look at what PID loops are really doing inside building automation systems. Instead of treating PID settings like mysterious numbers, this episode helps you understand how the controller responds to what it sees and what the behavior of a loop can tell you about the system around it. You'll also explore why problems that appear to be tuning issues can originate somewhere else entirely. Understanding that distinction can save time, reduce unnecessary adjustments, and make troubleshooting more systematic. Topics Covered • What a PID loop is actually doing behind the scenes • How proportional, integral, and derivative behavior affects a control loop • Why hunting, overshoot, offset, and windup occur • How trends can help you interpret loop behavior • Why sensors, sequencing, outputs, and mechanical issues should be investigated before tuning The goal is not to memorize tuning values. It's to understand the loop well enough that when something goes wrong, you know what questions to ask next.

SBA 563: Preparing for Effective Service Calls

A service call can start going wrong before you ever arrive at the building. A vague work order. Missing credentials. No clear site contact. The wrong tools. No understanding of what changed before the complaint started. For building automation professionals, preparation can be the difference between spending hours chasing symptoms and arriving on site ready to troubleshoot with purpose. In Episode 563 of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, we explore how to approach service calls with more structure and discipline. You'll hear how experienced technicians prepare before they roll out, organize their thinking when they arrive, and leave behind information that makes future service work more effective. Topics Covered • Turning vague customer complaints into useful troubleshooting context • Preparing access, credentials, tools, and information before arriving on site • Developing a focused troubleshooting plan without locking into assumptions • Creating a repeatable approach for the first minutes of a service call • Documenting findings and communicating results so customers and future technicians can act on them If you work in BAS service, commissioning, controls, or facility operations, this episode will challenge you to think about how much of an effective service call happens before the troubleshooting begins.

SBA 562: Estimating Electrical Loads for Secondary Power Loops

A secondary power loop can look completely healthy while creating problems that technicians chase for months. A valve struggles to reach the set point. A controller randomly reboots. An actuator behaves inconsistently. Nothing trips, and the panel looks normal. If you work in building automation, these symptoms can point to an electrical load problem that was built into the system long before the service call arrived. In Episode 562 of The Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, you'll learn how to think through secondary power loops before installation and how to evaluate existing loops when intermittent problems start appearing. The goal is not simply to make the equipment work today. It is to build power systems that remain reliable as devices are added, loads change, and systems operate under real conditions. Topics Covered • Why overloaded secondary power loops can be difficult to recognize in the field • What needs to be considered when estimating transformer capacity • How startup conditions and voltage drop affect BAS devices • Common secondary power loop mistakes that create intermittent failures • How field measurements can validate your design assumptions A small amount of planning can prevent years of troubleshooting problems that never look like power problems.

    SBA 561: Database Fundamentals

Databases sit behind more of your building automation work than you might realize. Every time you pull trend data, investigate an alarm, restore a system, review an audit trail, or move information between platforms, a database is part of the process. For building automation professionals, understanding database fundamentals can help you troubleshoot more effectively, plan systems more confidently, and have better conversations with IT teams. In Episode 561 of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, we break down databases from a building automation perspective. You'll learn what's happening behind the scenes when your systems store and retrieve data, why certain database decisions matter in the field, and where common problems can surface over the life of a system. Topics Covered • How databases support modern building automation systems • The database concepts and terminology BAS professionals should recognize • Why trends, storage, timestamps, and retention deserve attention • What backups, restores, accounts, and audit trails mean for system reliability • How clearer ownership boundaries can improve collaboration between BAS and IT teams You don't need to become a database administrator. You do need enough understanding to recognize what your systems depend on and ask the right questions before a database issue becomes a building automation issue.

    SBA 560: Damper Sizing 101

A control loop that hunts all day may not have a controls problem. The real issue could have been locked into the system before the controller was ever programmed. In this episode, we dig into damper sizing and why this often-overlooked mechanical decision matters to building automation professionals. Incorrect damper sizing can show up as poor comfort, wasted energy, premature actuator failures, noise, and unstable control. Knowing what to look for can help you distinguish between a programming issue and a mechanical problem that tuning alone will never solve. Topics Covered • Why damper sizing directly affects control performance • The relationship between damper selection and control authority • What to consider when evaluating airflow and velocity • How blade configuration changes with the application • Common damper and actuator issues that create problems in the field If you troubleshoot HVAC controls, commission systems, or review designs, understanding what is happening mechanically can help you get to the root cause faster.

SBA 559: How to Coordinate with Electrical and Mechanical Contractors

In this episode of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, we tackle one of the most common sources of friction on a controls project: coordination between electrical, mechanical, and controls teams. As a building automation professional, you often sit directly between multiple trades. When responsibilities are unclear, a missing connection or misunderstood scope can quickly become a schedule problem, a budget problem, and eventually a relationship problem. This episode explores how you can approach those coordination points earlier and gain better visibility into the interfaces that affect your work. You'll hear how to identify potential gaps before they reach the field and how to navigate conflicts without damaging the working relationships you'll need on this project and the next one. Topics Covered Why electrical, mechanical, and controls handoffs break down Where Division 23 and Division 26 responsibilities can create scope gaps How furnish, install, and terminate responsibilities affect controls projects What to consider when coordinating controls interfaces and field dependencies How to approach jobsite conflicts while protecting schedules and relationships When controls sits in the middle of the project, you have a unique view of how the building fits together. This episode will help you think differently about using that position to keep projects moving.
