Episode 58: Jesus Met Me in the Darkness: Serina Lane's Story

What happens when the pain you buried for years begins to come back to the surface? In this deeply personal episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Serina Lane, author of Laugh At Cancer, for a powerful conversation about faith, childhood trauma, suicidal thoughts, forgiveness, healing, cancer, and the love of Jesus Christ. Serina shares that she first accepted Christ at age 13, but spent many years living apart from Him. At age 34, everything changed when she had a powerful encounter with the love of God. She describes feeling overwhelmed by His love and walking away from that moment determined to know Jesus in a deeper way. Years later, Serina faced another battle. She shares the story behind her book, Laugh At Cancer, including a spiritual experience in which she saw Jesus laughing at a cancer cell. Serina explains how she began praying, speaking healing Scriptures over herself every day, and holding tightly to passages such as Isaiah 53. Serina shares her personal testimony that Jesus healed her from cancer and explains how that experience changed the way she understood faith, fear, and the finished work of the cross. But the conversation goes much deeper than cancer. Serina opens up about painful memories of childhood sexual abuse that surfaced during her healing journey. She talks about years of disturbing thoughts, fear, spiritual warfare, and suicidal despair. She explains how she understood many of those experiences as spiritual oppression and how prayer, forgiveness, and continuing to seek Jesus became part of a long healing process. One of the strongest parts of this conversation is Serina’s journey toward forgiveness. She explains that forgiveness did not begin because she suddenly felt better about what happened. It began with a decision to obey God and speak the words of forgiveness even while the pain was still there. Pastor Noel and Serina also discuss an important truth: forgiveness does not mean pretending abuse was acceptable. It does not mean removing healthy boundaries. And it does not mean that trust must automatically be restored. Forgiveness is about refusing to allow the person who hurt you to continue controlling your life. Serina also shares how childhood abuse affected her ability to trust authority figures and how healing changed the way she responded to pastors and other leaders. This episode is for anyone who has carried shame. Anyone who has been abused. Anyone who has wondered whether healing is possible. Anyone who has fought thoughts that told them life was no longer worth living. And anyone who needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ can meet us in places we thought were too dark, too painful, or too broken for anyone to reach. Serina’s story is not a story of pretending pain never happened. It is a story of bringing that pain into the light and continuing to walk toward Jesus one day at a time. Episode 57: Karen Ortiz: Abuse, Trafficking, Addition to Freedom in Christ

Some people talk about redemption as a church word. Karen Ortiz has lived the need for it. In this powerful episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Karen Ortiz for a deeply personal conversation about abuse, human trafficking, addiction, survival, recovery, and the transforming grace of Jesus Christ. Karen’s story goes into places most people would rather not talk about. The pain of abuse. The reality of being trafficked. The grip of addiction. The shame and brokenness that can convince someone that the future has already been stolen from them. But Karen’s story didn’t end there. Through Jesus Christ, she found hope, freedom, healing, and a reason to keep moving forward. Her testimony is not about pretending the past never happened. It is about discovering that the past doesn’t get to decide what God can do with the rest of your life. Today, Karen is a mother of two, a grandmother, a professional dog groomer, an active member of her church, and a woman determined to turn pain into purpose. She is also developing Rahab’s Table, a mission with a unique heart: helping feed and foster dogs living on the streets of Cleveland, Texas, while also providing temporary foster care for the pets of people entering addiction recovery. Think about that for a minute. For someone finally willing to enter treatment, a beloved dog can become one more impossible decision: “Who is going to take care of my pet while I get help?” Karen wants Rahab’s Table to help remove that barrier. Karen has also shared her firsthand experience with organizations fighting human trafficking and helping survivors throughout the Houston area, including The Landing, Hands of Justice, and Twelve 11 Partners. The Landing serves survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation through trauma-informed care grounded in the love of Christ. Hands of Justice is survivor-led and works through survivor support, education, career development, advocacy, and economic empowerment. Twelve 11 Partners is also survivor-led and works with people overcoming human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation as they move beyond survival and toward lasting freedom. This isn’t an episode about making Karen’s darkest moments the centerpiece of her identity. It’s about what Jesus did after the darkness. It’s for the survivor who wonders whether healing is possible. It’s for the person fighting addiction who believes they’ve gone too far. It’s for the family member trying to understand what someone they love has endured. And frankly, it’s for the Church, because ministry cannot stop at the church doors when people outside those doors are being exploited, abused, addicted, and discarded. Karen’s own words may say it best: “Without God there would have never been a future to testify about.” She has a future. And now she’s using it to help somebody else find theirs. Episode 56: The War Within Mental Health, Addiction, and the Road Back to Purpose with Dr. Bradley Berg

Mental illness and addiction don’t stay hidden forever. They bleed into marriages, families, careers, churches, and every relationship surrounding the person who is suffering. In this episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Dr. Bradley Berg, founder of Encompassed Purpose, for a direct conversation about mental health, substance abuse, behavioral patterns, recovery, faith, and the difficult work of rebuilding a life. Dr. Berg brings decades of leadership experience in behavioral health and addiction recovery, along with an approach that combines evidence-based practices, cognitive restructuring, personal accountability, whole-person wellness, and Christian-centered support. His work challenges the idea that people can simply gather more information and somehow stumble into transformation. Real change requires action. It requires honesty. And it usually requires help. Pastor Noel and Dr. Berg discuss the destructive thinking patterns that can keep people trapped, why addiction is rarely solved by willpower alone, and how families can offer compassion without enabling continued destruction. They also confront the stigma surrounding mental-health treatment, especially inside churches where struggling people are sometimes told to “just pray harder” while serious emotional, behavioral, or substance-use problems continue tearing their lives apart. Prayer matters. Faith matters. Jesus changes lives. But asking for qualified help isn’t a rejection of faith. Sometimes it’s the first honest step of faith. This conversation explores the connection between the mind, body, spirit, environment, relationships, and daily decisions. It also examines the need for structure, accountability, healthier routines, recovery support, and a renewed sense of purpose. Encompassed Purpose currently offers services addressing mental health, substance-use recovery, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, behavioral addictions, counseling, coaching, sober living, family support, and other recovery needs. This episode is for the person fighting a private battle. It’s for the family that’s exhausted from watching someone they love self-destruct. It’s for the church leader who wants to respond with both truth and compassion. And it’s for anyone who wonders whether a life damaged by trauma, addiction, shame, or destructive choices can still be rebuilt. The answer is yes. Recovery isn’t easy. It isn’t instant. And it isn’t produced by empty promises or motivational slogans. But with truth, action, accountability, proper treatment, supportive relationships, and faith in Jesus Christ, another chapter can be written. Episode 55: The Fight of Faith: Mike Tarnow's Cancer Story and God's Healing Hand

When Mike Tarnow heard the word cancer, it wasn’t his first encounter with the disease. His father had battled lung cancer for years before passing away when Mike was only sixteen. Decades later, Mike would face his own diagnosis and discover just how deeply cancer reaches beyond the patient, affecting spouses, family members, friends, and everyone standing nearby trying to remain strong. In April, doctors found cancer in two of Mike’s lymph nodes. They also discovered three spots in his lungs that were presumed to be cancerous. What followed was a difficult season of medical appointments, treatment, surgeries, uncertainty, prayer, and learning to trust Jesus Christ when the outcome was beyond human control. Then Mike received incredible news. His latest CT scan showed that the cancer in his lymph nodes had shrunk until it was no longer detectable. In this episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel and Mike pause to celebrate that report and give glory to God for His healing hand, His mercy, and His faithfulness throughout the entire journey. Mike shares openly about the moment he received his diagnosis, the fears he faced, and how the battle affected his wife, family, and close friends. He discusses the people God placed around him, the strength he found through prayer, and how Jesus worked in his life during treatment, surgery, and recovery. This conversation isn’t built around pretending that cancer is easy. It isn’t. Cancer is brutal. It disrupts plans, tests relationships, exposes fear, and reminds us how little control we truly have. But Mike’s story also demonstrates that believers don’t walk through suffering alone. Jesus remains present in the examination room, the operating room, the waiting room, and the long nights when answers seem painfully slow. Mike’s testimony is a reminder that we should be thankful for skilled doctors, effective treatments, faithful caregivers, and medical technology while still recognizing God as the source of every blessing. Medicine and faith aren’t enemies. God can work through physicians, treatments, family members, and circumstances that we may not fully understand. Whether you’re fighting cancer, recovering from surgery, caring for someone who is sick, or waiting for medical results that could change your life, this episode will encourage you to keep praying, keep trusting, and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus Christ. A favorable medical report is worth celebrating. Absolutely. But our ultimate hope isn’t found in a scan, a diagnosis, or a doctor’s prediction. Our hope is found in Jesus Christ, who remains faithful in healing, suffering, life, and eternity. Episode 54: Micki Woodford 180 You Turn: Faith, Fitness, and the Fight for Whole-Body Stewardship

What if taking care of your body is not about vanity, but obedience? In this powerful episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with Micki Woodford, author of 180° You Turn: A Biblical Approach to a Healthy Lifestyle Devotional & Wellness Journal and owner of MASE Fitness. Micki is not just talking about health from the sidelines. She is a warrior in the fight for faith, discipline, wellness, and purpose. With a Master’s degree in Exercise: Nutrition & Wellness, certifications in personal training, exercise nutrition, yoga, TRX, paddle boarding, flexibility, and years of experience helping people get stronger, Micki brings a needed message to the Church. Christians often separate spiritual health from physical health. Micki challenges that thinking head-on. In this episode, we talk about honoring God with the body He gave us, building better habits, fighting shame, finding discipline, and learning how Scripture connects with exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress, and daily choices. This conversation is not about chasing the mirror. It is about stewardship. It is about service. It is about having the strength, energy, and focus to serve God, your family, your church, and your community well. We also talk about topics that deserve future conversations, including how to start healthy living, sleep hygiene, stress management, whether Christians should consider vegan eating, and what a busy man can do in a 30-minute workout. If you feel tired, stuck, out of shape, overwhelmed, or ready for a reset, this episode is for you. Start small. Take the walk. Drink the water. Pray before you quit. Get back up. Strength Redeemed. Episode 53: Legacy Under Fire: William "Big Sarge" Hansen: Strength Forged Through Sacrifice Service and Faith

What does real strength look like? Is it surviving five combat deployments? Winning Strongman competitions? Coaching championship athletes? Raising seven children through life's hardest seasons? Or is it choosing to serve others...again and again...even when life has taken its toll? In this unforgettable episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel sits down with William "Big Sarge" Hansen, a former United States Marine and Army Infantry Sergeant whose life has been defined by courage, discipline, sacrifice, and unwavering service. After serving our nation for 22 years, including five tours in the Middle East, Big Sarge could have walked away and focused on himself. Instead, he spent the next 16 years helping wounded veterans, injured first responders, athletes, and everyday people reclaim their strength, overcome pain, and rebuild their lives. But this conversation goes far beyond military service and physical strength. Big Sarge opens up about the hidden cost of leadership, raising six daughters and a young son, walking through his wife's battle with cancer, mentoring the next generation, and discovering that the strongest men are often the ones carrying the heaviest burdens for everyone else. Together, Pastor Noel and Big Sarge discuss: • What combat teaches you about fear, leadership, and brotherhood. • Why emotional and spiritual healing are just as important as physical recovery. • The challenges of fatherhood during deployments and life's unexpected tragedies. • Competing as a Masters Strongman athlete while approaching sixty years old. • Why faith is the foundation that holds everything else together. • The legacy Big Sarge hopes to leave for his children, grandchildren, and every life he has the opportunity to influence. This episode is also a glimpse into the heart behind the man as he shares stories from his upcoming book preserving the incredible legacy of his father's ministry and the lives forever changed through Rio Bravo Children's Home. Whether you're a veteran, first responder, father, coach, athlete, or simply someone fighting through a difficult season, this conversation will challenge you to redefine what real strength looks like. Episode 52: God Had Other Plans: The Michelle Steiner Story

Some people are told “you can’t” and spend the rest of their lives believing it. Michelle Steiner didn’t. In this powerful episode of The Lions for Christ, Pastor Noel welcomes Michelle Steiner, the heart behind Michelle’s Mission, for a testimony full of courage, faith, perseverance, and purpose. Michelle lives with an invisible disability, and throughout her life she heard the kind of words that can sit heavy on a person’s soul. She was told she couldn’t go to college. She was told she couldn’t earn her bachelor’s degree. She was told she couldn’t get published. She was told she couldn’t have the job she wanted. But God had other plans. Michelle didn’t let other people’s low expectations become the walls around her life. She kept going. She earned her degree. She became a published writer. She stepped into advocacy. She became a paraeducator helping students who need someone in their corner. She built Michelle’s Mission to encourage, empower, and educate people with and without disabilities. And she did all of that while carrying a story that too many people never take the time to understand. This episode is not just about disability. It is about dignity. It is about faith. It is about the power of encouragement. It is about what happens when someone refuses to bow down to the words spoken over them and instead keeps walking toward the purpose God placed in front of them. If you have ever been underestimated, overlooked, dismissed, labeled, or told your dreams were unrealistic, Michelle’s story will speak directly to you. People may try to shut the door. Episode 51: Nelson Seda: From Demons to Deliverance

This episode of The Lions for Christ is not soft, safe, or surface-level. Pastor Noel sits down with Nelson Seda for a powerful conversation about demons, deliverance, repentance, music, spiritual warfare, and the life-changing authority of Jesus Christ. Nelson’s story is a rescue story. Not a religious makeover. Not a self-help comeback. A real testimony of Jesus stepping into a man’s life, confronting what had control, breaking chains, and calling him into a new purpose. From walking away from hip hop to surrendering his gifts to God, Nelson opens up about what it means to leave the old life behind and follow Christ fully. This conversation gets into the hard truth that many people avoid: not everything pulling on your life is harmless, not every influence is neutral, and not every chain breaks because you “try harder.” Some chains only break when Jesus steps in. This episode is for the person who feels trapped by the past. It’s for the one battling shame, spiritual confusion, fear, temptation, or an old identity that keeps trying to drag them backward. It’s for anyone who needs to be reminded that Jesus is still saving, still delivering, and still restoring lives that looked too far gone. Nelson’s testimony points to one clear truth: No demon is stronger than Jesus. No past is too dirty for grace. No life is too broken for God to redeem. Watch this episode. Share it with somebody who needs freedom. And don’t just listen to another testimony. Let it challenge you to bring every hidden battle, every old chain, and every un-surrendered gift to Jesus Christ.
