Let's Have a Powwow

Amy Farid

LHAP is centered around the Urban Indigenous experience in NYC. We will talk about guests Homelands and How and Why they came to the big city. We will also cover culture and fashion as it is a big part of the Podcast Hosts' life. Being a fat, brown woman working in Fashion for over 20 years I've heard it all! Let's Have a Powwow is inspired by those cringe moments we've had in professional settings where someone has suggested "having a powwow" to discuss work stuff. We are reclaiming the word! So join in and enjoy indigenous excellence. Don't worry, everyone is invited, we will also feature some of my favorite Allies!

The Music Episode Feat. Mato Wayuhi and Lucaa

Send us a text Hawe, cousins! Welcome to the Music Episode! There is so much incredible music coming out of Indian Country right now, and today I’m joined by two of my favorite Native artists to celebrate it. First up, Lucaa calls in to talk about her new single “Feast,” intentionally released this November during Native American Heritage Month and the Thanksgiving holiday. The track is a cinematic clapback to the oppression our ancestors endured and a powerful reminder that colonization did not destroy us. Next, Mato Wayuhi joins the show to dive into his new album Bygoner. He opens up about what inspired the project and drops some serious gems about the importance of staying true to yourself as an artist and a human being.  I’m joined by my good friend Stephen, our resident Rosalia stan, to discuss and dissect LUX. Naturally, we couldn’t leave Florence Welch out of the conversation, her new album Everybody Scream is a raw and vulnerable collection of songs that highlight  the unfair realities women continue to face.    I hope this episode inspires you to create a new playlist or helps you discover your new favorite song. All songs are streaming Now!  Thank you to Lucaa and Mato for taking the time to call in to the Powwow hotline! Y’all go listen to Bygoner and indulge in Lucaa’s Feast! Kalyn Fay

Send us a text This week I speak to one of my favorite humans, Kalyn Fay. If you are lucky enough to know them, you know what I mean. Kalyn is an oklahoma born and bred indie folk  songwriter and musician who writes songs about their homelands.  When I listen to their music it's like a loveletter to Oklahoma.                                                  We discuss the family trip to Branson that inspired young Kalyn to take up the Dulcimer, The doctor conference that convinced them to NOT become a doctor, and why Oklahoma is special. Kalyn is also a gifted artist and curator. They use their art and music to weave their relationship to the land, longing to connect the people who share it. You can currently hear Kalyn’s music in Sterlin Harjo’s show The Lowdown and in Resident Alien all streaming now.   Kalyn is your favorites, favorite. But they will tell you that their music is “for you, for me, for us, for We”  Thank you Kalyn! I'm so glad you didn't become a doctor.  All Music in this episode is by Kalyn Fay.                                                                                  The show opens with Kalyn's song "Tulsa"  I share a story about listening to "Oklahoma Hills" walking through a casino (highly recommend) and I close out the show with "Baby Don't You Worry"  Follow Kalyn's MUSIC Instagram @kalynfay                                                                          Follow Kalyn's ART Instagram @kalynbarnoski Support the show Follow the pod @letshaveapowwowpod Created and Hosted by Amy z.
